Big Day for Woodmen Tower Falcons

Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society announced that the banding of its five newest Tower-top residents will take place Monday, June 3 on the 28th floor of the Woodmen Tower. This is the 25th year in which peregrine falcons have chosen to nest atop the Tower and the second year in which falcon pair Mintaka and Hera have produced offspring.

Raptor Recovery Nebraska and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will begin the banding at 10:00 a.m., and at this time will also take blood and determine genders. Woodmen of the World will present a $500 donation to Raptor Recovery Nebraska and a $250 donation to the NE Game and Parks Commission to thank them for their work with the peregrine falcons.

Once genders are determined, as part of the 25th anniversary of the Woodmen Tower Falcon program celebration, Woodmen of the World will be holding the annual “Name the Falcon” contest again this year through Facebook.

An earlier feed from Super Mom...the only problem was that she decided to defeather on the edge of the box and a couple of the kids kept getting buried by the wings...I didn't stay for the entire thing, which probably lasted over 30 minutes. Oh and everybody got at least a mouthful of feathers.

Sorry for so many pics...hoping for a vid, but the cam just didn't really cooperate..

watched a feeding today. Boy was it harsh. The little one had prey intestines wrapped around him somehow, plus numerous feathers stuck to him. One of the other chicks tried to peck the food off him. At one point he appeared to be choking but Mom took the thing away from him.

Hera brings in the biggest white bird you've ever seen. She feeds for quite a while when I see the male land with more prey. I knew he was coming in. :hapdance:

I think something is very wrong with the chick to the right. It didn't get up when there was a feed earlier and now one of the siblings stood on it's tail and there was no reaction whatsoever.
The other four are now huddled together in the left corner.

EDIT: I think it is already dead, no movement at all, no breathing that I can see either. Other four are moving, parent is sitting on edge of box right now.
