Well, it was a wild and crazy morning on Peregrine Patrol!

Arriving just after 7AM I got a call from SusanH, another volunteer that there were workers atop Market Tower in close proximity to the nest box. Needless to say KathyQ and Will were going bonkers. Building management said roof repairs were necessary...

But, contending with the 31st floor workers was just the part of the mix. Susan H and I watched anxiously from the ground as the workers dodged both KathyQ and Will. At times things would "settle" into a routine with Kathy sitting atop the nest box or the red key, but as soon as the workers changed what they were doing, all H___ would break loose. At one time I observed Will circling for what seemed like forever with prey dangling from his talons until he finally gave up and flew someplace else. About 11 AM the workers took a break, leaving their rope, but vacating the area, so Susan and I decided to have lunch in shifts. With an eye to the nest box, we were sitting outside Starbucks when Dawn from Market Tower called and said a peregrine was down on the west side of Market Tower - sitting in a flower pot. Susan rushed to get her box and I ran to help her. This is what awaited me. Since Susan had walked by that area shortly beforehand, we knew Dox was a new arrival to the pot. Since he was holding his wing just a little funny, I transported him to the Hattons for evaluation. He is there now and will not be released back to the box until at least tomorrow. In the meantime, he is resting comfortably while awaiting a fresh chicken dinner compliments of the Hatton hospitality!

Always untimely when workers have to access the site.

Well, he is one lucky little falcon in many ways. Really can't imagine that work on any building with nesting Peregrines can't be put off a little longer, though.

We presume Dox is the one that was on 29 since his identity was not confirmed until he landed in the flower pot. Of course, who else could it be!

I know, I hardly ever have time to visit Harrisburg. But when you know there are so many eyes watching them, as in Harrisburg, I am at ease. Dox is a cutie pie for sure!!!

Building management insisted that the work had to be done Jane. The manager explained it as roof repair, but it looked more like they were working on the light fixtures. In the end, it mostly turned out okay. We are grateful that Market Tower is willing to host the nest box and certainly don't want to create any animosity that could make them reconsider.

That is good news. Will he be put back in the nest box? Wouldn't want to scare anyone off the building before they're ready.

Released Dox without a hitch about 3:15 this afternoon. Accompanied by Warren from DNR, we hauled the crate up to the 31st floor store room. Greg, from Market Tower opened the door to the ledge area, we put the crate out there and NOTHING. Dox was not going anywhere. After giving him a few minutes to collect himself, we went to plan B. Brought the crate back in, placed a towel over his sweet head and removed him from the crate. A few photos later [my hair had not been combed and no make up] I set Dox in the gutter area, said good bye and good luck and Greg closed the door.

I was amazed at how quickly KathyQ went into action, screaming like a banshee and dive bombing as soon as that door opened. I guess she is nearby always, even when we do not see her. We were safely tucked into the store room so no danger of her actually reaching us unless she came through the door. I also was surprised that Dox did not just hop out of the crate as soon as he heard MOM. But not understanding falcon-speak, maybe he was getting a lecture instead of a welcome.

Afterwards Warren and I headed to the circle. KQ still flying about and making noise- just in case we decided to come back. She is one heck of a Mama!

Evening report:
I think one fledged. I had 3 in sight plus Kathy sitting on the SE corner of 31. All of the sudden there was fluttering and a bird flying chaotically with Kathy in pursuit. It went around to the north side of MT, attempted to land, then flew out of my sight. I later found what I think was a juvie on Old National. After a few minutes it was gone and a bird was flying - not well - towards the east side of Market Tower. Lost sight of it, but then saw a juvie on the 27th floor ledge. With only one set of eyes, it is hard to be certain, but I would bet money that one has successfully fledged. Going down in the morning so we'll see....
