From this morning...

Current...Bertha (not sure I can really call her that) is all over the place. She may be making short loops off the platform..hard to tell, as the cam can't keep up with her.

She seems to like this part that juts out

She disappeared from this section

..and ended up back here...not sure how she got there

She then made a mad dash in front of the igloo (missed it)...and by the time the cam made it around she was here:

Here sister is right underneath her..

Thanks Matrix...and here's how that came about..

She was up top, just a yelling...sister still underneath

I don't know where she landed, but probably somewhere on the platform..and either she ran her sister out, or her sister came out to see what was going on...then started her exercise!!

Eve landed with a snack..

I had to answer the phone...so, not real sure what happened after that...but, found "Bertha" screaming...so, I guess she missed out...oops

Thanks for the beautiful pics sgb. She is still running around and flapping. I lost her for a few minutes. I don't think she is flying yet though, she is just too big! Here's a few from tonight and a few from a few days ago.

I feel sure that "Bertha" has fledged. Its day 45 for her...but, she should be back eventually...not too many other places to land

OK..these pics aren't great because she wouldn't hold still and I couldn't position the cam fast enough...but, what's up with her feathers? I've been noticing this the past several days...its like the sheath hasn't come off!! They are like this on the lower part of her wing and some of her upper tail feathers. I don't seen how this girl will ever be able to fly well unless those sheaths come off.

Barb, I wouldn't worry about Big Bertha being able to fly. Harrisburg's Red Girl was the same weight & she isn't having any problem. Surprisingly enough, its our smallest girl who is making many trips to the ledge to beg for food. :eggthumbup:

The keratin sheath isn't loosening like normal...I was waiting to see what happens when the next rain comes thru... Sometimes the water helps loosen the sheath... the tips that have popped out look good...

A snack just arrived...our "unsheathed" girl was in the right place at the right time and snagged it..

I think I was wrong about her tail. it looks ok..its the feathers coming off of the shoulder and feathers coming off of the wrist (our elbow) that appear to be affected..

Hopefully with preening, those sheaths will pop open..wish I knew more about this stuff, so that's only a guess..

She'll preen them off. I watch birds do it every day in rehab.

There is no place in the area for these birds to land except the tower when they fledge so I'm sure we'll keep seeing them all the time. I've seen both most of the day today. It's hot and getting really hot this week which isn't very motivating for fledges.
