I didn't get down there to see Blue do her first flight, but as Bev and I had our backs turned, a raven, followed closely by Chase swooped by right behind us on the 5th floor of the car park (our viewing site). Jean and Stewart saw that wee drama, but all we saw was Chase heading east. Whew!

And then as I was cycling home ~ 11 a.m., I heard and saw three merlins. I wonder if it was two adults and a recently fledged young.

not a good day. Blue started off great today but unfortunately tonight she was low and I came home s I knew what was going to happen. She hit the glass at Maz and is deceased. We only have Green girl left.

This building is killing our birds, one by one,

Black has no broken bones, just dazed and hopefully be hacked on Pembina river where there are not buildings, no cars., just pure nature

Well, I think this is it for me. I have reached the breaking point where I just cannot handle the deaths anymore. the long hours , and we try, but the darn glass , the building in front of nest box.
We have done many successful rescues but this is our third female , in same area.

sorry, I am signing off

Carol and I are so sorry to hear about Blue, Bev. We were really looking forward to seeing her soar along with Miss Green over the next few days. We understand how hard it is for you. Be proud of what you've done, lady. Because of your work, Mr. Black twice avoided a drastic fate and survived and will, I believe, be successfully released at Pembina. That's two successes out of three. We'll be back to the CSB for our next shift on Thursday to see Green continue to learn.

:tissue: So, sorry to hear about Blue girl. So, happy that we still have 2. Bev and Peter it is the long hours and your love of the falcons that have kept most of the rescues ok.

Poor little Blue, so beautiful and sweet, perfect in every way. I thought for sure that she was more fit for flight than Green who was heavier and still had fluff. I am sick about her death, but honored that I got to witness her precious life.
:sorrow: :cryinggirl:

I am so sorry for you bev. and all who know them in person.
I am sorry for Green too who now has nobody to play and learn with and especially R and Chase who did everything right but still lost a baby, two really, if Black will not be returned to the nest.

Bev.....this just is breaking my heart..I am so, so sad to have lost Blue.. :sum7: .and if I am feeling this heart broken then I can only imagine how tough this must be for you and all the others who are so hands on. These windows/buildings have claimed so many lives this year. There is no telling how many have actually been lost since there is no info once they leave the box..

She was so precious to watch...and I was hoping that since she was the last to leave, that she would be extra strong..but, I guess nothing can prepare these fledglings for all the hazards they must face other than experience.

Hugs to all of you who have been out there trying to keep them safe..

So sorry bev and all the watchers at this site. :girlsad3:

I really am beginning to think that it would be better to encourage all PeFa's out of the big cities and back into mountainous regions.

Bev...Don't u dare give in to that frustration...There isn't a thing that can be done about it. We are there to do What we can When we can...Nothing more.
You know we lost two to this...(My first two)
You have allready saved one from the road...Be proud of what you HAVE done!!...
It hurts but even if they are killed later by another peregrine or lightning etc...you never know when the one you save or will save in the future shows up to remind you of what it's all about!!

I refer to the following story/statement, by the late Big Frank, whenever I am troubled by the events I cannot change....Please excuse the off topic...

Great news that WindWhistler has 4 chicks with Erin this season. They will be banded soon. From early shots on our cameras it looks like there is a good chance it will be 2 males and 2 females. This brings to 41 Windwhistlers production.
More great news Windwhistler becomes a Great Grandpa this year!! Stormin one of his 18 King St chicks is the dad at our Canada Square nest in Toronto. Stormin and Haven have had at least 3 chicks hatch.
To me this makes Windwhistler the most incredible example of how important saving even one bird can be to the recovery of an endangered species. Windwhistler was rescued waaaay back in 1998 when he was a chick by CPF watchers. Since then he has gone on to become the most prolific breeder we know of here in Ontario and maybe Canada. He is responsible for 41 chicks getting a chance to fly the skies. We know of several of those chicks that are currently breeding and now Stormin is producing Great Grandfalconchicks of Windwhistler. We are trying to complete a family tree, we are somewhere between 80 and 100 Peregrines that Windwhistler's DNA is in. So next time someone says "ya big deal U saved one bird, what did that accomplish?" You can tell them Windwhistlers story!

I am so sorry bev & Peter, there isn't any words that will make it any better right now just know we are here for you if you need to talk vent rant or rave. I was just wondering if there is any groups that could maybe get involved with trying to get the building to put things on the windows? Maybe a petition or something to that effect. Just throwing ideas out there.

I got a chance to get out last night for a short visit. But , I think Green girl was tried and ready to go to sleep for the night. She flies over the Maz and high up as per Peter words. Black should be getting hacked soon. That will be a great day trip to go and see many falcons in the air at ones. They will be in flying in, a beautiful river valley that has a campground that you could have a picnic and a just have a relaxing afternoon.

jut a quick in and out

Green is flying around all over this morning. Lucky for Peter as he could go to Tim Horton as he was following her,
She missed a prey catch yesterday morning but then got fed. She will have been flying 5 days today. Sunday was not much as she spent most of it parked on apartment entrance .

she knocked mom and dad both off their perches this morning. Sometimes it looks like mom and dad are not interested but we are used to them keeping hopping with at lest 3 kids. So I guess this is relaxing for them and both have been in box scraping. Green has spent every night back at bosarea and was in box yesterday

We have pictures but will post them after weekend if anyone interested in seeing them. some nice ones from Jean and Janice also

Have a great day/

Carol and I spent a very nice evening with Peter at the U of A site. Bev was there when we arrived but Peter soon sent her home. We were treated to several flying displays by Miss Green who's flying very strongly and sticking most of her landings. Radisson, Chase and Green took off on a tour of campus at one point and circled several buildings and each other over a fair amount of time. Green even took time to fly over to the roof of the Maz and watch that noisy red bird on the roof (the Stars medic-evac chopper) for a few minutes before she took off again. Jean popped in near the end of our shift and saw the tail end of the festivities. Green can be a bit of a klutz at times. Just before she turned in for the night, she was cat-walking on a ledge near the top of Campus Tower next to Chase when she fell off, recovered after nose-diving a few feet and returned to the nest box where she looked like she would turn in for the night. Radisson seems to be in a sort of funk. Peter noted that she didn't seem to be herself most of the day. Perhaps she's missing Miss Blue.

I am waiting to her from Gord, as Blue is in our freezer, but I know he is probably in the field , with the falcons. I am hoping he has hacked Black band while there.

thanks Bob for report.
I am staying low til I collect all my thoughts.

Just going down , but Peter said Green dove off perch and tried to stoop pigeons over parkade this morning and then chased them .

Weber

WEber should be fledging next week and Peter and I will just do a very skimpy watch. We have everything in place there. but we have the people at Bin 104 that watch and phone us. Someone was on roof yesterday , and that could cause young ones to fly prematurely so Peter had to go down and talk to them as Gord was not available. changing a light bulb. They know better.
Must run
