Wow - I don't like the looks of those tail feathers at all. Guess we'll have to wait for first light and see if anyone's around.

our kids in my opinion anyways like to hear your opinions :D

Didn't I read there is another nest or something close by if so maybe this is one from there

Probably the best thing to do is to email a picture of this juvie to Elise & maybe someone at the plant can keep an eye out for one that looks scraggly & can determine whether its one of Alcoa's juvies or another juvie...I'll do it if I have permission to use one of your pictures to send...or maybe I'll just send Elise the link to come in & look at these pics. What's everyone think?

I think it is a good idea to send Elsie the photos...
Since our timeframe is different she can have it asap.

I have seen this kind of damage done to wing & tail feathers when a bird is in a cage that is too small. Do you think one of our kids got himself into some tight place and had to flap against something rough to get out? Could have been something too narrow or something he got DOWN into. Hopefully this is NOT one of our kids cause those feathers could be damaged until the next moult. Those feathers look damaged enough to inhibit this birds ability to hunt. Are there people on the ground that would look out in case this bird comes to ground from weakness from lack of food?

I had the same thought as you KF. that it could be another falocn from somewhere near by. they are trying to attract falcons to another nest box they have up.
I think it is a good idea to send Elise the pictures also.
No one there at present. I am in and out. Getting the tree decorated ,finally :tree: :tree:

It could be that this juvie got himself/herself into a situation & we're told that the Alcoa employees keep an eye on the juvies somewhat. We had a juvie fledge prematurely last year (Stan), & the employees saw it & passed on the word that he was fine & his mother was keeping a close eye on him.

I'm going to get a picture emailed to Elise so she can look into it...

Am wondering if this could be a ''hacked'' bird. Do they always band hacked birds?? This guy doesn't seem to have bands.

Thanks, catwoman, for coming up with the idea of emailing Elise with some photos. Hope she can give us some info. We know she cares as much about these falcons as we do.

Thanks also to nycbird for your first-hand experience with seeing this type of feather damage. Maybe it is Barega.

I zoomed in a bit to see it better. Almost looks like it's feathers are covered in mud that has dried. :?

That's an encouraging thought, Patti! If its just mud, it will wash off as soon as it rains & its been raining a lot there lately! Fingers crossed!

Hope you're right about the mud, the feathers look a little thin to me. Must be one of ours, maybe Barega. I'm not sure that we've seen him that much, but if he had been trapped somewhere, and that thought makes me kinda sick, I'm sure somebody would have noticed that one of the juvies was missing and rescued him before his feathers got so messed up. He looks great other than the feathers, so maybe it is just mud. We need an update from the site to assure us that everybody is ok. :?

Hey bev. Yeah, I get that login message a good bit. I just keep hitting cancel or X or something until it goes away. I keep thinking that Alcoa is so much safer than the cities are for raising baby falcons but it really isn't. I guess the place has it's own unique set of dangers. I know they found the skeletal remains of poor little Dash on top of one of the buildings there a couple of years ago. I can't remember now what they thought might have happened to her, maybe electrocution. But I also know that the cam can make things look different, usually worse, than they really are, so I am hopeful too.

Funny you should mention about the cam giving you a different image than what you may think. Meaning sometimes the coloring is off. when I first checked in today the picture was a bit off color wise. I should have remembered that befroe. I kept looting and thanking, this is so weird.
It seems like it is hazy today.
