Yes, for all of you who have been Worrying, Wondering and Watching, I can confirm that as of one hour ago this morning, the South Bend nest box is STILL THERE ! :girlcrazy:

Does anyone want a weekly update on the presence of the nest box ?

Well guys, the nest box is still there ! :sum9:

Actually, I saw it twice today !! Oh wonderful, lovely nest box . :girlluv: It looks kind of frigid up there, probably frosted over. In fact, it is in exactly the same place as last time, almost as though it has not moved at all. So I want to ask, does anyone know if nest boxes do some kind of hibernation when it gets cold? Is there any place on the board I could research this?
I am also wondering if the cold has made the box contract slightly, and how much the wood shrinkage versus the metal shrinkage would be, and taking into account any heat retention mechanisms of the nest box itself. There is snow, but certainly nowhere near enough to insulate.

Ach, silly me ! What was I thinking? :duh: Nest boxes do not generate heat on their own !

****************
(Actually, I also saw two peregrine falcons today, but judging from all the excitement in the recent nest box postings, probably no one here wants to read about these small and uninteresting birds. )

So I was right, people want to read about the nest box and not the birds. Ok, will do.

Dutch Eagle Fan, nice to see you here again ! I hope that it brings you joy to know that here on this board you and everyone else can share empty nests and nest boxes from all over the world !

:rudired: Ok, the report all you nest box fans have been waiting for ! :rudired:
The nest box is still there, having survived the unusually cold local weather.

Falcon sightings: ( in case some lurking naturalist is interested :ugeek: )
The falcons have been seen at night on the west side of the Tower Building, perched in various windows, which is where they perched last winter. Four nights ago, they were both there, Guinevere looking fine and fluffy. Last night I sighted only one bird, who looked kind of uncomfortable, which I could understand, considering that it was :cold: -5 DEGREES at the time.

It has now warmed up to 17 degrees, so hopefully our fine falcons will be a bit happier during this much warmer night.

Hey Guys, guys , :rudired: HEY YOU GUYS ! :rudired: There is a falcon on the County City Building :rudired: RIGHT NOW !!! :rudired: And I'm sure that you will all agree that this is THE most exciting thing to occur in any of our lives this whole week so far. :wave

But our falcon is perched on the south side of the building, and the nest box is on the north side. :suchdrama: Does anyone know what I could do to coax this poor cold bird into the nest box where it BELONGS? I am in the library, just one block away, so if anyone has any suggestions, just private message me, or heck, you could post it here so everyone can see, and I will run right outside to see what I can do to help this poor bird and all you fellow falcon lovers who have been deprived of seeing Guinevere and Zeus.

LOL! They don't use the nest box to keep out of the weather. Strictly a nursery. Now visits are to maintain or defend their territory! We will have to count on your wonderful posts to keep tabs on these two for the time being! Thanks for being so vigilant!

Ok guys, I have been sitting here for FOURTEEN MINUTES, staring at the screen  and NOONE has contacted me :impat: So I guess I will just have to go home and leave that poor bird to freeze up there on the building , since neither the the local animal shelters nor the police seem inclined to do anything.

I guess this forum is apparently not the hotbed of activity that I had been led to believe. :shockedsanta:

Oh my goodness gigi, you sneaked on while I was typing ! Guess I was too absorbed in my post. Are you SURE they really don't need the nest box right now? Because honestly, it is below 50 degrees today here in South Bend, and for the neighbor's 2 chihuahuas, that's pretty cold. I mean, even I am wearing a coat today and those birds have only their feathers to protect them. I am surprised that they venture out of the nest box at all during the winter. :girlcrazy:

Anyhow, whether they need the box at the moment, there seems to be nothing to defend against in downtown SOuth Bend, at least for now. There was maybe some flying deer or something a couple of days ago, but they didn't get too near the nest box.

We found with our Indy falcons they have all kinds of nooks and crannies that they hole up in. I think about all the natural settings on cliffs and they basically have no protection there yet they have survived. We will start seeing them soon though as their hormones start ramping up. :flirty:
