Unfortunately, not enough sunshine and entirely too much snow lol. Hopefully our feathered friends and nice and fluffed up- we are looking at windchills of -25 to -35 in the coming days :cold: :coldwinter:

Thanks for your board visits Matrix and marineof2 ! :newyear8: Went out to check on birds, since I heard :cold: weather is brewing. (Although the word brewing seems to imply something hot .......)

I saw somebody perched on the west side of the Tower Building about 10:30 pm, the other bird is probably somewhere close by. It was hard to tell who it was because the snow was obscuring my binoculars. The temperature at that time was probably about 25 degrees, gentle snow, and not much wind to speak of.

Stay warm folks and let's wish the best for all of our birds ! :newyear17:

:sleigh: Thank you for your report, sbwatcher! Since Guinevere doesn't care to visit "the nursery" lately, I enjoy the eye witness accounts. I'm glad they have both been seen around town. Please be safe, sbwatcher and marineof2! Sounds like you have a nasty couple of days coming.

Seriously, I think that there are probably a few warm air vents on the downtown buildings to give the guys a little relief. There may be some warm air leaking from the west side windows of the Tower Building, because I notice that they rarely perch there when it gets really hot. There are probably better air sources than that which I don't know about.

I wonder if they will shift away from the west side of the Tower when the :cold: wind starts to hit, but I will not be walking there to find out ! Sudden thought: I wonder if the falcons ever go into a parking garage to escape the wind? Not too many cars out right now to trouble them if they are there. See you all in a couple of days !! Will try to give a ground report before the weekend so that everyone can be informed about how the peregrines weathered the storm.

In Rochester NY the falcons go into the elevator shaft of one of the nearby hotels. They have enough room to roost and the hotel guests probably don't even know they are there. These birds haven't survived all these years without being pretty darn clever. That survival instinct is strong!

SBwatcher and Marinrof2...How goes it in the tundra??? The nestbox looks a little like a snowy owl retreat!

Still cold but 'warmer' haha. It was only -13 when I got up this morning :cold: Then we had a bit more snow to add to the roads which already still weren't great. Add in some possible freezing rain tomorrow and we're in for a blast lol!

And to top it off here, there was a snowy owl sighting near our nestbox town... I would look for it, but a white owl in the white terrain...well..nuff said... Just be carefull out there if that freezing rain hits! :6snowflake:

Ok, sort of a light in content post today, because honestly the most I can say is that I did see one falcon on the Tower Building window a few nights ago, AFTER the cold snap. It's 44 degrees outside now, and that's like spring weather for us, so maybe our guys are out of town hunting. I notice that they don't usually hang out by the Tower windows until it gets cold.

Well, at least I can honestly say that I did say that I did see a falcon and I'm guessing that both are around. I had little doubt that they would both survive the polar vortex.

Thanks for the report sbwatcher. :hapdance: They are tough birds and it amazes me how they survive the cold.

Falcon sightings: Last Friday afternoon, a falcon seen perched on the County City Building, maybe this was Zeus, not sure. And Guinevere was seen one night in a Tower Building window. Less than 12 floors up, so I could even see her beautiful head markings ! :hapdance:

re Gigi's post of Jan 5th, there is a hotel just across the street from the Tower Building, so maybe Zeus is sneaking into their elevator shaft some nights. He is younger and maybe not such a tough old bird as Guinevere.

:cold: is coming through tonight !@
