Sorry I didn't post anything after I got home - I have been on cold medicine and not sleeping well because of a terrible cough, so when I got home I started to write an update to the Fledge Watch volunteers and fell asleep at the keyboard. Have you ever done that? When I sort of snapped out of it a few minutes later, I had a couple of really weird sentences written. Real words and sentences, just loopy like dream logic.
I was about 4 blocks away when Reenie called me and I hit the gas. Only hit one red light, luckily, and threw the car in park while I was still going 2-3 mph. I couldn't find my reading glasses and my fingers were too shaky to call Capitol Police right away, but after the blanket didn't work I took a deep breath to calm down then found my glasses and punched in the numbers. A car came around the corner in I think about 30 seconds, and they were really nice!
It was a bit tricky getting the net on her while she was on the railing, but when I tried to walk closer to try to pick her up by hand she looked like flapping right into traffic so it had to be the net. Red is one BIG young lady! And she was not nearly as cooperative as her brother was the other day, except in the matter of giving us plenty of prime opportunity to check her mouth and throat for signs of trich while she hissed and screamed at us! She ended up going into the rescue box still clutching my left glove - yep, she wouldn't let it go and I couldn't get a proper hold on her with her wings flapping in my face and her pinching my pinky, so I took it off and tucked the wing down bare handed. I knew I had a good enough hold on her that she couldn't foot me, but I was a little worried about getting bitten. But she was too busy glaring at my face to notice the opportunity. And then she was in the box and the chance was gone. Fortunately I had a second pair of gloves with me, so I could glove up before we opened the box to check her out and do the release.
Red is the 9th rescue I've been part of; when we get to the roof, we usually have the dickens of a time coaxing the fledgling out of the box before we get strafed by one of the parents. They are so confused and probably scared that they just back into the farthest corner and want to hide. Not Red! Once she saw daylight, she blinked once or twice then literally sprang from the box and landed about 8 feet away from us, near the edge of the roof. There is a small wall at the edge, so as long as we kept our distance she wasn't likely to jump up and take off before she had a chance to rest. Plus, she started alarm-calling bloody murder right away! So we beat a hasty retreat back to the doorway and hurried down to street level so we could keep an eye on her if she decided to get back into the air right away. Fortunately, she was satisfied to get to the corner of the roof directly above the ledge (where her three siblings were playing without her last evening) and settle down to survey the new and bigger world her flight had opened up for her.
First fledge was May 28, by the way - even though Jet went off the ledge accidentally, he landed on a roof and made a second attempt at flight a few minutes later. If the first flight doesn't count, the second one does.
