THANKS GIGI! I HAD FORGOTTEN THE BANDING IN INDY TODAY. NEXT SEASON I AM GOING TO WRITE DOWN THESE BANDING DATES, SO I DON'T FORGET! WILL WATCH FOR YOUR REPORT. :egg19: PETERSBURG IS THE NEAREST SITE TO ME. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE FALCONS AFTER FLEDGE AND WHILE IN FLIGHT AND HUNTING TRAINING. OF COURSE, I'M SURE YOU COULD NOT LEGALLY GET NEAR A SITE @ A POWER GENERATING STATION IN ORDER TO SEE! NEXT NEAREST SITE IS MILL CREEK WITH SAME SITUATION. :egg15: I AM THANKFUL THEY PROVIDE THESE NESTS WITH CAMS FOR OUR FALCONS AND US!

Some good news and not so good.

First of all, yesterday John banded 4 chicks.

Females
987-97568 82/Z b/r Nellie
987-97569 83/Z b/r LindaLu

Males
816-26611 34/P b/r Luke [named for Luke Hoffman, Eagle Scout who constructed nest box.]
816-26612 E/67 b/r Spike

:sorrow:
The sad news is that Spike did not appear healthy and after returning him to the box, he died. I don't have any other details, except that he did not appear healthy. I will update the nesting calendar.

I am sure there will be speculation about why no intervention and I try not to second guess John's decision. I always try to remember the "survival of the fittest" and know that in the long term we do want the strongest birds to survive and pass their genes along to future generations.

I also feel bad for the human who named the chick when it does not survive. Elation that your name was chosen and then a let down.

Also John was not able to identify the male at the nest. Elusive fellow!

I am not a regular follower of this nest but it's always very sad when one is lost. :tissue: :sorrow:

I forgot to mention that Luke was named for Luke Hoffman, the Eagle Scout who constructed the nest box. I edited the above post.

SWINWK, It is upsetting when we lose one, but I always try to celebrate the time we had with them and focus on the healthy survivors and rejoice in them.

I have just been sitting here watching for a while and wondered where the 4th chick was. I was hoping that he might be out on the platform. I am so sorry to have lost him and would like to know more. .

I'm just getting home and reading this....Ya know, I had a feeling something was wrong...I recorded this nest for over 20 minutes earlier today just to see if I could find #4..which I couldn't. My first thought (after I realized, after a feed, that there were only 3) was that #4 must have had Trich or something and they had kept him/her back for treatment. Never in my wildest dreams (after watching them prior to banding) did I ever suspect somebody was not feeling well..

I'm wondering if the stress of banding, which chicks normally tolerate, was too much for him due to an underlying condition.

I think the same thing happened last year at the Dunrovin Osprey nest. It wasn't long after banding and the return to the nest that the lone chick died.

Just so very, very sad... :tissue:
