The last Red-tailed Hawk nestling to fledge was E3 on June 14. Unfortunately yesterday morning E3 was injured in an accident. While resting on the roof of one of the Greenhouses over the road from the CornellHawks nest, the automated roof vents began to close. E3 was resting under one of these vents which lowered very slowly. The young bird did not move out of the way and became trapped under the lowering glass catching its right wing. Shortly after the vents closed they opened and Cornell Facilities staff were contacted and immediately responded shutting down the motors to the vents. E3 remained on the roof of the greenhouse for the afternoon, standing, but with the right wing lowered. Victoria, a licensed rehabber and Cornell Lab of Ornithology staff member, arrived on scene just a couple of hours after the event.
Victoria advised that there should be no attempts to capture the bird while it remained on the roof and that it would be best to wait until the bird moved. In the early evening luckily E3 decided to try to fly to a nearby tree, but didn’t quite make it and fell to the ground. Victoria sprang into action, safely capturing the bird. She then took it immediately to the Cornell Wildlife Clinic.
At the clinic both the vet and Victoria looked over the bird. It appeared the juvenile had an injury to its right shoulder. The hawk was given sub-cutaneous fluids and some anti-inflammatory medication. It was decided that an x-ray should be delayed for the following day as they did not wish to stress the bird further. To stabilize the wing it was wrapped up.
Today we have been waiting for results from the x-rays. Victoria heard from the clinic this afternoon. The vets confirm that E3 has a humeral break to the upper wing bone just below the shoulder joint. While this sounds like the worst news it is actually easier to heal in a young bird than a dislocation. E3 will undergo surgery tomorrow to get a better understanding of the break and to pin the bones. Currently it is a guarded but fair prognosis. Dependent on the integrity of the bone the bird has a fair chance of being able to fly. We now await further news from the surgery and will most likely be notified tomorrow afternoon.
E3 is vocalizing regularly at the vets and the staff have fallen in love with him!

On Tuesday evening, June 17, we received an update from the Janet L. Swanson Wildlife Health Center at Cornell. The veterinarians there found that E3 has a complete fracture in the first bone of the right wing (the right humerus). The veterinarians decided to delay surgery to allow more time for E3 to rest and feed after the stressful events on Sunday, especially because E3 had a low red blood cell count. They will reassess E3's condition to determine when surgery can be performed. The good news is that E3 is alert. We are very grateful for the expert care that E3 is receiving. Thanks to everyone who has sent good wishes to E3 and donations to the Wildlife Health Center. We will keep you posted!

This afternoon we received a further update from the Janet L. Swanson Wildlife Health Center at Cornell. The vets reassessed E3’s condition and red blood cell count this morning. The count was at a safe value and they proceeded with the surgery. The injury at the fracture site was more severe than expected, based on the x-ray images alone: several bone fragments were present at the fracture site and one of the important flight muscles was partially ruptured. The fracture and the muscle were repaired. E3 did well during the procedure and recovered well. E3 was fully awake, grooming and making calls shortly after the surgery. The prognosis is still guarded at this point. We will have to wait and see if and how the bone heals and if the bone heals if the flight muscles are fully functional. We will keep you posted with any further updates.

Here is our little champion E3 in his recovery enclosure. You can see a little bit of red vet-tape around the "external fixator" in the injured right wing. The external fixator pin is attached to the internal pin and both hold the fractured bone in place so that it can heal with correct alignment. It is the most common technique used for the repair of fractures of the humerus in birds. You can also see that E3 has a "tail guard" on. This helps protect a bird's tail feathers while they are in recovery. It is usually made of a thin piece of film, like X-ray film, and placed on the underside of the tail. It is important to provide different substrates to perch upon to keep raptor feet healthy. In this picture, E3 stands on a perch of astro-turf.
E3 is alert and responding very well to treatment; E3 even started eating on his own today! At the moment E3 is on pain medication and as a preventative he is also being given an oral antibiotic and an oral antifungal (to prevent Aspergillosis, a fungal disease common in juvenile Red-tailed Hawks).
So far, so good! Many thanks to the great vets and staff at the Janet Swanson Wildlife Health Center! :egg19:

news from FB

The veterinarians at the Janet L. Swanson Wildlife Veterinary Center did a great job cleaning up E3's injury yesterday and E3 is recovering quietly. While E3 was under anesthesia, the internal pin and the external fixator pins were removed. The veterinarians decided to perform additional surgery to clean the fracture site and examine the integrity of the bone. Based on the findings, it was decided not to replace the fixator and to use a “figure of 8” bandage with body wrap to immobilize the wing. During the surgery, the veterinarians could see that E3’s body has started the repair process by laying down layers of strong tissue (a fibrous callus) along the injury site. This is a good sign and means that there is healthy tissue present that is trying to heal. Everyone is doing a great job looking after E3, and have reported that he has a "great personality"!

Red-tailed Hawks: E1 and E2

Ithaca Red-tailed Hawks 6/29, 05:14

Spotted on Mann Library, recently fledged juveniles from this season returned to the nest to possibly wait for a prey drop from Ezra or Big Red. E1 and E2 have been seen around campus sitting on the roof of Plant Sciences, Weill Hall and surrounding buildings.

E3 is still on the road to recovery and making progress. Though his wing is still wrapped, the veterinarians at the Janet Swanson Wildlife Health Center are pleased with how he is doing. They also decided he is well enough to be moved to an outdoor enclosure. Here, E3 can enjoy the outdoors outside of a clinical environment, but still continue to be monitored by his doctors. Many thanks to the Cornell vet school who shared this great photo with us!

Almost six weeks after injury, E3's bandage was able to be removed by the veterinarians at the Janet L. Swanson Wildlife Health Center. The good news is that E3 seems comfortable without the bandage and is holding his wing in a nearly perfect position. However, at this time, his wing has a limited range of motion. This is to be expected after being wrapped, and because of the callus and scar tissue that have formed around the break. E3 has been slowly stretching his wing at his own pace, which is great as this activity increases the flexibility of his joints. Without a return to a full range of motion in his injured wing, it less likely that E3 will be releasable, but he still has a way to go with rehabilitation before the veterinarians know what he will ultimately be capable of doing. E3 has been preening and rearranging the new feathers that grew in over the injury site and continues to be a good patient. Here is a picture of him just after his bandage was removed.

E3 continues to do well and is being habituated to larger spaces and taller perches. The veterinarians at the Janet L. Swanson Wildlife Health Center report that he seems to enjoy himself and is using his injured wing with caution. He has a calm demeanor and a sweet personality that makes it easy to work with him. Progress is slow, but steady, and though updates may be less frequent, rest-assured that he is doing well and we will make sure to share any updates as his healing journey unfolds.

In less than two weeks, E3 has gone from stretching his wings, to using his wings to jump to a height of 5 feet with no effort. Though he is not able to fly, his injured wing has regained 50 percent of its normal range of motion and he is progressing better than expected. E3’s caretakers are working with him at his own pace to avoid injury. Many thanks to everyone's support of his care and rehabilitation!
