I am not sure South Bend has an organized group like some nest sites have. Carole, the rehabber, goes, but she has duties back at her place, Owl Acres. Here is an article that appeared about her some time ago. A lot of work for sure.

Matrix, I wonder if one of the workers saw her hit. Some of the tires on equipment can be huge. Just surmising.

OMG.... Terrible news. I'm so tired if sad news. Poor girl fought so hard for box, and was a good mom. So sad. I'm so sorry to all the watchers.

Here is an article from the South Bend Tribune. Apparently Scarlett was hunting and collided with a piece of equipment.

From the article: A man who witnessed the accident described it to the animal control officer as “just like a bolt coming in,” Riewe said.
“She (Scarlet) just snapped this piece of equipment,” Riewe said, “and course that flipped her onto the ground.”

I know this will probably come off as me sounding critical of the situation, but that's not my intent at all...more of me trying to understand the decision process.

If Scarlett hit this equipment hard enough to break it, then you know impact was incredibly hard!! why not a trip to the vet on Saturday rather than a small flying cage? :egg16: (maybe because it was the weekend?) We have all read how unpredictable head injuries can be..(even in the article Carole said she had "reservations...") Scarlett could have had a skull fracture and probably a bleed into the brain area. (my sister's an ER nurse..I hear about this stuff all the time..)

Of course, there are no guarantees a Vet could have done anything to save her either...

Guess I'm just thinking out loud and playing "Monday morning quarterback.."..I know Carole does an excellent job and made the best decision she could under the circumstance. Just such a tragedy..

I hear you SGB. When I read the word "snapped", I thought it meant made contact with the tire. I cannot imagine that she broke the tire.

In my experience with rehabbing, you make the best call you can. Often there is nothing that can be done for a head injury other than observe. If we can see an obvious injury, drooping wing, broken leg, things like that, a trip to the vet is definitely in order. Many vets offer their services to rehabbers at little or no charge and they usually do not have the time and resources to do much more. Occasionally the DNR will get involved and pay the vet bill, but this really is not frequent.

:sosad2 The odds are not with this nest the last two years ...... I wondered why I had only seen one adult the last few days ........ :sorrow:

Today's ground report: About 2 p.m. I saw a falcon perched on top of the WNIT Tower, turning its head and scanning. It may have been a juvenile.
7:10 p.m. A severe thunderstorm watch here, storm is slated to come in around 8:00-8:30 tonight Eastern Time. I go to look for birds and find Carol and Bill, a fellow member of the (informal) South Bend watch team. Carol pointed out both juvies sitting on an overhang near the top of the Chase Building, and Zeus on top of the City County Building. She said that she hopes the juvies will stay parked there through the storm because then they'll be sheltered from the high winds. She also said that the female has been having some good flights in the last couple of days. Here's hoping everyone will stay put for the next few hours. The worst of the storm should be over by 10 P.M.

:tissue: :sorrow: Poor girl! Our nest has been hit hard the past few years. Last year it was the wind. Although South Bend is not an majorly large city, keep in mind these birds are in the midst of the downtown area with lots of traffic, which isn't great for a falcon who dives for food- if they are zoomed in on their prey, they may not see a vehicle in it's path. So sad!

Thank you for the ground report sbwatcher. Encouraging that the female is doing a better job flying. I do hope they are tucked in someplace protected during the storm.
