Well who didn't see this coming? I was pretty sure it was a new female when I saw them so cozy over there eating together. I sure hope that Madame X is ok. Wait, is that ok to say?

Of course it is ljames!

Matrix; checked the Pitt and they use silver band for USFW, I should know that as Dorothy and Belle both have silver bands.

Beauty too! :1val:

I know that PA and VA usually band with b/g..and they rarely report to the Data base (I'm sure they aren't the only ones)...but, I can safely say that in the limited time I have been watching cams, I don't recall ever knowing of a band to be upside down..at least from any of the nests we cover here..

If we can get a definite read on the green portion, then somebody WITH authority can contact the Bird Banding Lab and get an ID. I don't mind asking Donna (Columbus) to do it if need be. I've contacted them in the past, asking for ID's of birds with no response..guess it helps to have DNR attached somewhere to your name..

Amazing what you can do with Google...I found a 2004 hatch from Cathedral of Learning with a g/b band number of *8/*P...this could actually be a sibling..since at least a partial band is in sequence...now, if I could find the rest of this particular clutch...

OK..just found that there were 4 chicks in the 2004 clutch...

How crazy is this!!

2004 Band numbers

Image

They did the same in 2002 and 2003...I'm still trying to find numbers for 2005 (found) and 2006 (not found)...no upside down numbers for 2007 that I could see..Looks like they may have stopped doing it in 2005..and I'm having no luck finding numbers for 2001

edit to add: Looks like 2004 was the last year PA banded upside down...still no luck finding #'s for 2001..so, I'm done...LOL

I noticed since he came to Hamilton he's preferred the farther ledges - we may have a change of nest location this year.

Me too Bev it's 4.57 am and I am up already. Thank you SGB, that's amazing! Did they use purple USFW though? I thought they used silver?

I didn't see any mention of right band color. I'll go back and double check later on today.

I kept thinking that if they did it back then, then who else did this. It looked like that PA was allotted the P/number series. I wonder if some other state was allotted the P/letter series. I guess time will tell..

I don't have much viewing time today and even less tomorrow...

I've been following the cams for many years but wasn't really familiar with the banding specifics until I starting poking around yesterday trying to find our mystery female.

Is it possible the green over black was placed in reverse by mistake by whoever banded her? And should have been black over green?

If so, I see a bunch of sequential combinations in the Midwest Database - mostly in Michigan. Are the bands usually distributed in sequential "batches" to areas/cities close by to each other? Sorry, hard to phrase my question properly but it makes sense in my head hehe!

I found a *P/*C female (named Trixie) born in 2008 at Kent County Courthouse Grand Rapids in Kent, Michigan.

I found a *P/*D female born in 2009 at the Port Sheldon JH Power Plant (now Consumers Energy Campbell) in Ottawa, Michigan.

Could our g/b *E/*P actually be a b/g *P/*E who is possibly *P/*D's sister? But for some reason missing from the database?

Gah! The suspense is killing me :girlcrazy:

They are usually distributed in batches...and yes...a band number can be missing. That's what happened when were were trying to ID one of the birds in Topeka, kansas. Not only was the band number missing from sequence, but it was banded the wrong gender. I ended up emailing the biologist in Nebraska...because that was the closest sequence I had found in the data base...and sure enough, it turned out to be one of theirs!!

The other possibility is that *P/*E or "*E/*P is really a sibling of a F, G bird...and that nest is not in the data base...

Sure looks that way!! I'm sure there are several people that are contacting the appropriate agencies as we speak. Hopefully, they will get a better pic of that band...and maybe some of the numbers off the federal band..but, that may be harder to do..
