HARRISBURG ~ MAY 2015 PART I

Took a bus downtown this morning to meet Reenie for a noon walk, which got cut short by rain. When I got down there a little after 10, I found Lil Dad up on the corner of 333, and Niecey out near the stick. Lil Dad took off to somewhere, so I went into the train station to grab a snack. Not too long after I came back out, Lil Dad returned with some prey that looked like either a Starling or Grackle. He took it to the 13th floor ledge and ate most of it. He then circled out and headed up toward the stick. Niecey spied him and took off after him. Lil Dad dropped the prey and Niecey caught it in mid air. She took it to the 11th floor ledge, and was eating it when it started raining pretty good. She took the food over to the U Building, and Lil Dad landed on his camera perch, actually the wire to the camera. Reenie and I did our shortened walk. She had to go back to work, so I walked across the street to wait for my bus. Lil Dad was sitting on the stick at that point, but he took off over my head, and finally ended up SO high in the sky he became a little speck.

Lil Dad made an appearance in the scrape a moment ago. Her picked up that Jay wing and put it down. Only one chick paid any attention to him, as the other two are zonked and facing the wrong direction,

THIS IS A LUNCHTIME REPORT FROM A FRIEND, SHE ALSO SAW LIL DAD WAY UP THERE JANE :-)

This was neat, when I was at lunch I was looking out the windows from the snack bar and both parents went flying by, close to the window. They both flew out toward the East and then the Niecey came back. As she turned toward the direction of the ledge, she pulled her wings back and went into a dive, which I will never get tired of watching how fast they can accelerate!!
Then I saw LD fly higher and higher to the south, and he was just a speck. I couldn’t take my eyes off him or I would not find him again. He soared over 333 Market St. still a speck, when I saw a TV flying toward my window. It started to flap and I saw LD was diving toward him. He made contact twice, and of course, it maneuvered itself out of thereJ. LD flew back toward the ledge but I think he circled around 333 Market St., and that was the end of my lunch!!

Niecey flies in at 7:05 with a bed time snack. I think the menu item is bluejay

Well, shucks. I would have loved to have seen Lil Dad bombing that TV. Sounds like it was the same time as your friend's report, Reenie. I just got home a while ago. Niecey came into the scrape a couple minutes ago and is now up on the shield, being watched by the triplets. It's raining here with a lousy easterly wind. And love your posted picture, ljames.

NIECEY SAT THERE THIS MORNING SCREAMING FOR A GOOD 20 MINS OR SO. LIL DAD JUST BROUGHT FOOD FOR THE KIDS. COULDN'T TELL WHAT IT WAS, HOPING NOT A CATBIRD...........

ANOTHER FEEDING GOING ON RIGHT NOW AND IT'S ANOTHER BLUE JAY!

OH! WOW! Another Jay. A feather is stuck on the end of one of the Chicks beak. Wish I could send some Grackles up there.

I see the "pin" feathers coming.

I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT IN THE FIRST FEEDING, I SAW ONE HAD A LEG STUCK IN IT'S BEAK WITH THE FOOT WRAPPED AROUND IT'S BEAK. IT KEPT TRYING TO GET IT OUT WITH IT'S TALONS, BUT NOT COORDINATED ENOUGH TO DO THAT YET. ONE OR BOTH OF THE OTHER CHICKS TRIED TO HELP AND WAS PULLING ON IT, BUT THEN IT TURNED AWAY AND FINALLY GOT IT DOWN.................

Yikes Reenie! Those feet are a problem. Their digestive system must be really good! LOL!! LOL!!

They are sleeping so sweet now.

Niecey has checked into the scrape twice in the past ten minutes. She didn't have any food, but the chicks were pecking at her beak anyway. Niecey has now parked herself up on the shield. And saw one chick dragging the egg around.

NIECEY CAME IN THE SCRAPE AGAIN, ALL THE KIDS GOT UP SCREAMING AT HER. SHE STARTED DIGGING IN THE STONES BY THE CHICKS. I THINK HER NERVOUS DIGGING SHE DOES. THE CHICKS COULDN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT WAS GOING ON AND WHY THEY WEREN'T GETTING FED. THEIR CROPS DO LOOK EMPTY OR SHOULD I SAY, NOT BULDGING, LOL! NIECEY LEFT.

HMMMM, NIECEY JUST LANDED WITH A THUD AND CAME IN THE SCRAPE WITH FOOD. AT FIRST, THE KIDS DIDN'T MOVE, GUESS THEY THOUGHT SHE WAS JUST LOOKING IN ON THEM. NOW THEY ARE UP THOUGH AND VERY HUNGRY! ALL JUMPING FOR THE FOOD! WONDER WHERE LIL DAD IS???

EDIT: ANOTHER BLUE JAY...........

THE LOOKED LIKE THEY WANTED MORE WHEN NIECEY LEFT. THEN ONE KID FOUND A PIECE OF MEAT AND KEPT FACING THE BACK WALL AND HAD IT'S LITTLE WINGS OUT LIKE IT WAS MANTELING IT WHILE IT ATE IT :-)

DIDN'T TAKE LONG FOR THAT, NIECEY COULDN'T TEAR IT OFF FAST ENOUGH! SHE LEFT, ONE HAD A LEG IN IT'S MOUTH, FINALLY GOT IT DOWN THOUGH............YUCK!

AROUND 12:20, ANOTHER MEAL WAS BROUGHT IN. ALSO FORGOT TO MENTION NIECEY HAS A POOP SHOT ACROSS HER TAIL, LOL!

Seems like the Blue Jays will soon be hard to find around there! I always cringe thinking about the little ones trying to gulp down a leg and foot. Just seems like too much for them to handle at this stage, but of course, that's people thinking, not bird thinking.
