Just got home, had to leave earlier. I'm just glad the chick is still alive right now. Evidently, they think it is ok.

All three are feeding now and looking fine. It’s typical for them to get feathers or bones stuck in their throat and have to expel them.

Witnessed baby chick spitting up blood for some time. Also, it did not eat when food arrived. Could somebody review the footage and determine if he needs help?

Little chick just stood up and started gagging again. It's been 6 hours now, he must be exhausted from this. I really wish they'd have a look. I've seen many chicks get something stuck, but not this long.
Lil' Dad just brought in a tidbit. Sick chick is behind the other two.

LIL DAD BROUGHT IN A BLUE JAY HEAD TO FEED THE KIDS! LOL! SICK CHICK STAYED BEHIND, BUT THEN HE CAME AROUND AND GOT SOME. AFTERWARDS, THEY WERE ALL JUST BEING CUTE AND THEN BIG GIRL PICKS UP THE BEAK AND EATS IT! YUCK! I SO HOPE THE SICK ONE IS GETTING BETTER, I HAVEN'T SEEN ANY REAL GAGGING GOING ON :-)

I came in to suck up some dinner, but must go back out. Wish Niecey would bring some food. As soon as i enter this I will be away from the computer until maybe 7:30 or a little later.

THIS IS THE OPINION OF OUR REHABBER BASED ON EXPERIENCE:

The chick’s crop looks quite swollen which would appear that it had eaten on top of a large pellet that it has yet to expel. We see this a lot in kestrels. They glutten themselves, then end up with too large of a pellet, then they eat on top of it to compete with siblings. It’s all a part of growing up. The liquid you see it not the chick’s blood, but bloody meat juices mixed with digestive acids. The probable reason for its lack of appetite later was it’s still full.

Well, I guess that sounds encouraging, but that chick certainly does look lethargic. Niecey is in the scrape doing some houskeeing.

I THINK THE HEAT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH HOW THEY LOOK. I SURE HOPE FOOD COMES BEFORE IT GETS TOO DARK TO SEE IF THAT ONE EATS OR NOT! HE DOES SEEM TO BE DOING BETTER THOUGH.

Thanks for posting your rehabber's report Reenie. And thanks for posting the response you received ljames. The one gagging earlier did have a humongous crop ... that has gone down. I think they all look great right now!

Thanks for that report Reenie. Sounds logical, but hard to accept that explanation when watching him. I thought for sure that was his blood coming up. He was actually gagging in that picture I posted earlier this afternoon, so much that the little chick behind him was watching intently. Well let's hope it passes and he's ok tomorrow. Unfortunately, I have an all day event to attend tomorrow, so won't get to watch.
Well I do have my cell phone to sneak a look every now and then.

I am going to be out almost all day tomorrow working on a birding project. Am hoping lots of people can keep their eyes on the cam and report any happenings. Fingers crossed that this little chick will be OK. And forgot to add that I've met the rehabber already. Sue and I took Blue Girl from two years ago up to her place. The rehabber looked at Blue Girl for 10 seconds and knew right away she was dehydrated. This rehabber is very knowledgeable.
