No clue..when I opened the cam it was already stuck...and reading chat, had already been that way for 15 min...I never read back to see how it all started..

I do think we need to watch for an increase in the "black" areas...DC was really picking at its "armpits" earlier...this is how it started at Blackdog AND redwing...increase of parasites=weaken chicks, spending lots of time on their backs, usually followed by death.....just saying..I watched it both times at those nests.

I don't disagree. It really worried me last year too.

It may be nothing...but, DC was really picking at both armpits...that's exactly what the Blackdog mom did..apparently they can see them...I'm just saying (since I don't really get the time to watch this cam)..if you see black moving from the armpits, around to the back, or down the belly...the kids are in trouble...its dried blood because the parasites are usually blood suckers..

Thank you SGB. I trust you. I'll watch more closely.

Okay - apparently baby tipped over at 4:17 - so he was close to on his back for 1 hour.

 thanks...and also watch the neck area..

It was terrible at Blackdog...Could not get them to do anything...3 of the chicks died..4th chick they rescued and was named bugsy...LOL

Happened at Red Wing last year. Same symptoms..except this time they responded to my cazillion emails. Only lost 1 baby. They were heavily infested with something I had never even heard of....

Sadly, I think something may be wrong... I hate to be a downer, but because he keeps falling back, I think it's more than just a 1 time oops!

I did notice the black in the "armpit" & was hoping it wasn't parasites, but it might very well be. If it starts spreading, I believe this site will act quickly to save the babies.

Well we'll just have to wait and see how it plays out. Maybe he'll get better as he gets bigger, talons crossed. I've seen worse looking kids that managed to survive. We just have to tie B to the nest box..lol..don't let her leave. You can tell who the one is who spends all the time with the kids and knows what to do!

Yep...B just needs to stay...

From what I learned after those two nests was that a lot of chicks have parasites..its only when they get outta hand or the infestation is so severe that it becomes an issue..as they get older and start to preen, they can usually take care of the issue themselves..other than "black" the other common issue is not being able to turn back over once on its back..its the loss of blood that gets them.

fingers crossed that whatever is going on here, the kids can work through..

Um... watching Beauty and she's picking at stuff near her feet... paranoid now... but better to be aware than ignore it. Thank you, again, for the info SGB.

YW...don't want people to be paranoid, but I (unfortunately) learned a lot during those two episodes..and now I'm hypersensitive to "black" and strange chick behavior...

I don't know these guys like you do...so, you'll know what's outta character..

A feed just took place, but I didn't see the littlest get anything. I think Beauty was aiming for his mouth but one of the other 2 got the bite instead. That's unusual--its usually easy on us to watch Beauty feed.

I just posted your concerns on Rfalconcam and told them maybe to give a heads up to DEC about what's going on and maybe share some pics with them. I've been concerned too with the flipping upsidedown frequency..hoping it's nothing to worry about.

Thanks, Kris. It doesn't hurt to give them a heads-up so they have a plan of action if necessary.

Cute picture, Carly! Wonder how many meals they're had today. Chat said they had had 8 yesterday at some point yesterday evening, but it wasn't late enough to be the last feed for the day.

Thank you, Kris! They'll probably make it to 8!

Yes, we don't want problems at this nest, Beth. This is the one we come to because its upbeat & the parents are so good & its easy to watch Beauty feed because everybody gets their share!
