Oh geeeeeeeeeeeeeez....I seem to be obsessed...somebody help me...LOL...

My fantasy: the reason we haven't heard from Chad is that he got the chick, the chick is being checked out, and he's waiting for the results before he updates CMNH..

Boomer is the best...he is still standing guard...I wouldn't expect anything less from him..

OK...now I really must run...

I was thinking the same thing, SGB! I doubt that he could he grabbed the chick without us seeing, but with the slow refresh rate on this cam, who knows. I came up with this scenario in wondering why he hasn't posted anything yet. Well, I guess he has a life & is out living it. He probably wasn't aware of how many of us are following this.

I am still optimistic that the chick survived and will need some care. When gord has rescued chicks, some have been on the brink and with the proper care have pulled through

I am so glad they went up there today or chad did. .

this just posted by Chris of C&C...
"Sorry but Chad has never posted and didn't know tech. I'm just of work now. He made it there this morning but no good news to report... no chick found. I'll post more later but going to meet up with him now. I have to say that I feel personally hurt and resentful of any insinuation that people in Cleveland don't care about the falcons... of course I know otherwise. Thanks to all who care so deeply, even though we all need to keep this passion in perspective."
it is possible that it might have been Newt actually discarding the chick as it did seem frail and wobbly. Since the cams update by the minute, it could be that she tossed this chick out while the cams were refreshing and disposed of off cam as well. just a theory both Chris and I thought possible.
Sorry about the bad news. I feel this is a tragedy as a result of the higher ups and others who wouldn't let C&C do what they needed to do, which they, obviously were there yesterday to do.
And yes, the tray could be better, but in all the bandings ever done at TT, there has only been one fatal mishap, and that was eons ago. yes, we did stuff sandbags to cover up the holes in the drawbridge and the thing you brought up has only happened twice. when, after banding, the drawbridge was let down, a chick flopped out in 2 consecutive years. and in both cases, the birds got back in without difficulties. it's been a historically safe place to band.
and, i agree that the CMNH forum has been "light" as of late. i think that was more of a result of C&C migrating to FB that a resentment to Newt, although i do know that there was much love for SW. i was a Newt fan the minute she took over. she was known already from C&C covering her at the bridge they blew up. we get it..... C&C cover so many nests that much of the content of the nests went to FB, so there has been a lot less chatter on CMNH.. we know...
i love this forum..but we felt a bit attacked with a very broad brush. over this...PEACE!!

thank yo Bobby. :egg17:

that is so sad. we will never know. Too bad Chad and Chris were not given permission yesterday when it was alive

It is hard to tell in stills, if it was frail or not.

I guess FB does take a lot away from some forums. I personally do not follow FB so I guess I miss a lot.

So let us all continue as lovers of falcons and other birds . I personally only look in on Cleveland once in a while as I thought it had a lot of followers. I have 4 of my own sites to monitor and try to do as many as I can.

Let us hope Boomer and Newton continue to thrive and hope for chicks next year. We wil continue to look in on our Boomer and Newton

I have the utmost respect for Chad and Chris.

also my thought is that it perished during night. not old enough to regulate body temperature and maybe , they disposed of it.

Well said Carly!

I admire the devotion and attention that Chris and Chad give to the peregrine falcon and would never ever mean to offend them. I have learned so very much from their narratives and photos on their facebook page which makes my visits to the forum more meaningful.

I am sad that the chick is gone but because of Chad we have an answer and that is way better than not knowing.

Peace for sure!

I must say, I did check when I got home last evening...hoping that, by some miracle, the chick had reappeared, either on cam or by message of transport to rehab....but, sadly, no. Another harsh lesson of what can go wrong. I feel so sad for Newton and Boomer...this picture from a few minutes ago says it all..

Image

...and also a huge thank you to Chad and Chris who did everything possible to rescue this chick. I cannot imagine the emotions Chad was feeling yesterday morning when he arrived at the nest, unable to see/hear the chick, especially when it appeared well the night before. They are both so dedicated to the well-being and monitoring of so many pefas in the area..and I know that Newt holds a special place in their hearts.

Thanks for checking in with us, Bobby...I know it was a very stressful and sad day for the die-hard Cleveland fans and stressful for those of us watching this unfold. I think if anything can be learned from this is that these human provided nesting areas have to be made "baby-proof". If that means removing the tray and starting over, then so be it...We learned that at Columbus when the baby got a talon stuck in a crevice several years ago...and then there was the baby that squeezed behind the box and couldn't get out. Both required rescue, one late at night. Since those two incidents, they have blocked off, filled in, boarded up everything they could find. I'm still waiting for a chick to locate the next vulnerable area...hope that never happens!!

...and so we move on...gosh, wouldn't it be nice if a bridge or rehab baby needed a home...

For those that don't visit the CMNH forum. Last evening's post from Chad & Chris

    Nature's Tough Lessons:

Without trying to prematurely abandon all hope that the chick could somehow have made it out of camera view, I think we all are facing the harsh likelihood that the chick has died. We would be more than happy to be incorrect in this assumption and to be pleasantly surprised by the chick reappearing, yet as reported earlier it didn't seem that the chick was covered or adequately fed overnight or into the morning and there was no sign of the chick when Chad went to check today.

With the help of TT security, Chad was able to get mostly out of the window to check the tray and nearby ledge today and they were able to pull the drawbridge forward with a pole to check as much as possible underneath. Boomer and Newton were both at the nest as Chad stepped out, although Chad said that Newton was notably less defensive than she had been when we checked on Friday evening.

We were hopeful last night when we heard the chick calling and saw that the chick was not stuck and was able to move a bit in the corner crevice. We also saw Newton vehemently defending, and as she flew up and landed next to the chick it raised its head and was responsive to her. We even heard the "e-chip" vocalizations from both Boomer and Newt when we closed the interior windows as we were waiting for the right tools to remove the bolts to allow the exterior windows to open (signifying a potential upcoming feeding). So, we could see that Newton would have been able to get to the chick to feed and would be able to brood as needed, and the chick was mobile enough that we weren't overly concerned about not being permitted onto the ledge to retrieve the chick and place it back in the tray (as security requires that we would need to be tied off to go out there).

We wouldn't have guessed that the very experienced and historically nurturing and maternal Newton would have basically ignored the chick through the night and that she would return to incubate the four unhatched eggs that she had been no longer consistently incubating as she was brooding the lone hatchling, but that's exactly what happened.

We are left to speculate as to what happened to the chick after we were unable to retrieve it on Friday night. It was last seen in that same crevice, so we figure that it either crawled further underneath the drawbridge (out of view when Chad checked this morning) and died or it may have died in the crevice and was carried out of the nest by one of the adults. Sadly we have experienced this scenario in the past watching the Brookpark Road Bridge nest in 2010. At that time, we watched helplessly (unable to get to the nest) as one of the two chicks appeared weak and wasn't able to remain upright during feedings. Mom initially tried feeding the chick as it was on its back, but eventually stopped feeding the sickly chick and after it died she even made a brief attempt to feed it to the surviving sibling before removing the body from the nest. We posted about this on the CMNH forum, but we never posted the pics of the dead chick getting carried out of the nest (as we figured these were images that no one would want to keep in their head).

Having had that previous difficult experience at Brookpark, we are left to wonder if Newton sensed that something wasn't quite right with her chick and stopped tending to it in much the same way that we had seen before.

We always have and always will believe in doing all that we can to help these magnificent animals when we are able. Yet we also understand that some of the laws of nature are quite difficult to accept and "survival of the fittest" means that our very human desire to see the underdog make it through despite poor odds doesn't always get satisfied.

Meanwhile, it seems that sad endings like this are also reminders of the wonders and blessings of successful nests and young and how fortunate we are to experience their intricate lives up close, in life and in death.

Sorry that we weren't able to do more. Once again, we appreciate the shared passion and support of the very caring individuals here.

Thank you for bringing Chris' post over here SGB. It was very sad to read the post that Bobbytimewarp brought over to think C&C might have gotten the impression that any of us don't appreciate all they do for these beautiful creatures, not to mention sharing their beautiful pictures with us. I hope with the prior posts that concern has been laid to rest. C&C are in fact our heroes! Our frustrations, as well as theirs, was with the people that have the authority to take care of the nests.

RIP little one.
