Sad news posted on Statler City FB page: :girlsad3:

We have some sad news to report from our friends at the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation
"The resident adult male Peregrine Falcon at the Statler was found injured on the roof of the Ride Aid on Pearl Street on Friday, 9/4, with a broken wing. They suspect he may have been there for two days, in the heat, before he was found. The Erie Co. SPCA responded and took him in for treatment, but the bones in his wing were beyond repair. He is non-releasable at this point. When he is well enough, he will be transferred to a wildlife rehabilitation/education facility. So, sadly, he will be out of the wild.
His name is “Ojibwa” and he was hatched at the Landmark Building in Akron, OH in May 2003. When he arrived at the Statler in 2008, at 5 years old, he was identified by his leg bands. He has been the resident male ever since, producing 29 young falcons with his mate (a non-banded female) in his 8 years as the resident male. I’ve attached a couple photos of him from the past few years. He was a good falcon dad, and he’ll be missed.
Hopefully, it will not take long for the female to find a new mate. Buffalo lies along a major migration route, and she should have no trouble attracting someone new. If you notice a second bird hanging around, please let us know. It would be good to know when a new male arrives."

Always sad to hear about a precious falcon injured so badly that they cannot return to the wild, but also good that he was found and will live.
:girlsad3:

Thanks for the information.

great story bird music.

sorry to hear about this but I am glad he will be an educator bird. some think it is not a good thing as they should be free but having educator birds, especially one people associate with, is a great thing. It raises so much awareness. :5val:

I wonder about this
Could this possibly be BB? It all sounds so much like her situation.
Is this old news that I just haven't seen. Any thoughts here?

Defiant is a female Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus). The name “peregrine” means wanderer or migrator, and is appropriate for this species as they have the most extensive natural distribution of any bird in the world. Breeding pairs occupy every continent except Antarctica and are found on many oceanic islands. They prefer wide open landscapes with rocky cliffs for breeding, where they will use a hole or ledge for a scrape where the eggs are laid. They do not build a nest. They will also use man-made nesting structures with substrate such as pea gravel. Defiant came to live with us in December 2014 after being trapped by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to remove her from a construction site where she was attacking site workers and pedestrians in defending her eyrie. Orders from the USFWS were that she was to be placed with a Master Falconer or be euthanized. We were happy to have her move with us to Arizona

Interesting. I have no idea if Defiant is BB. Perhaps somebody in that organization could answer that question. BB was banded, but too hard to tell if "Defiant" is banded in her pic..Maybe somebody on the Peregrine place FB page would know...

If Defiant was banded, I'm sure they would have checked on her origin. Guess it could be possible that its BB and they don't want people to know what they were doing with her and removed her bands. It is probably illegal to permanently remove a bird's bands, but who knows. :girlcrazy:

Or be euthanized? For being a falcon? I can't imagine how an agency that claims to represent endangered species and is there to protect them would actually even contemplate that. What a sad world we live in. :girlsad3:

:agree: I so hope that Sage or someone has the news we want to hear.(that it is BB) Even if not at least this gorgeous falcon is alive.
I still think this is "BB" or should I say hope.

Here is an update on the peregrine falcon hurt at the Statler City Hotel in Buffalo, New York.

It's sad but Ojibwa now will be educating people in the area which is vital to the survival of these beautiful birds!!!!!!

I spent some time at UB yesterday but didn't see Yankee or Dixie. It was quite windy and cold and I suspect they were in some nook or cranny on the tower near the heater.

I am getting very excited about the upcoming season.......
