June 20~
    Mel has Fledged!!

Yesterday we started off with Rob and Marion keeping an eye on the Boys Club until Bruce arrived in the afternoon to close. While there were a lot of “touch and go” landings by both Lucky and O’Connor there were no takers to the sky yesterday. We knew that we weren’t far from a launch though and so I was down this morning to open the watch at 6am. There was lots of flapping on the ledge and it wasn’t long before Lucky came in with first breakfast. He all but threw it at them and he was gone on another hunt. The foursome grabbed the prey and scrambled around to get a piece of the pigeon pie and it was quite the scrap. It wasn’t 10 minutes later that Lucky was back with second breakfast and once again dumped it on the ledge and was gone searching for more. O’Connor was in with third breakfast and that just did it. Everyone was getting in on the action accept for one… …Ferris. What a tantrum. Screaming, flapping, wailing and grabbing at the nest tray footing the wood and stomping his feet. Wow. I met up with Trish who has joined us this year for the fledge watch (oh man, thank you Trish!!) and we sat and watched the wee boys for a while. I left the watch in Trish’s most capable hands who held down the fort until Bruce arrived. He took over and set up for an evening of food, flap and frolic. At around 7pm he caught movement to the west and went to check it out. Well! If it wasn’t little Mel out for his first flight and landed squarely on the ledge beneath the ADP sign! He took another flight over to the Moneris building and once again aced the landing. Three more flights from Mel tonight that ended with him back on the Moneris building at the base of the antenna looking up at Mommy. Great flights by Mel and his siblings are raring to go.

June 22~

    Tracy Simpson Reports:

Yesterday I started off the morning at 5am streetside watching wee Mel as he sat on the retaining wall next to Baylie’s patio at Kingsway on the Park. Right at 5 both Lucky and O’Conner flew into position around the ledge and the three homebodies were on their feet singing a dawn chorus. This got Mel rather excited and he started to walk the wall looking for the perfect launch point. Baylie was out on her patio having a morning cuppa and watching Mel when suddenly he decided to walk right up to Baylie standing watch!! They were almost nose to nose checking each other out. Mel made his way over to the west edge of the wall and by this time I had Roger with me. Mel took flight and landed on the roof of The Longest Yard. He ran roof to roof all the way to Lothian and finally stopped to rest. We were watching him closely as it appeared as if he had a slight droop to his left wing. He stretched it, preened it and flew well and the droop was only slight and infrequent. Something to watch. He took another flight out to the west, circled the Islington intersection and then realizing he didn’t have the height he made a brilliant choice to flutter down to the mezzanine skylight. Bruce arrived and I handed over the watch to him so that I could move up to William Osler.

The morning quietened down with Mel finally moving out to the Bloor St side of the mezzanine wall. Bruce saw him flutter down towards the stairs and he raced over to see where he went. Up the stairs went Bruce and he came face to face with Mel. He wanted no part of Bruce and took a flight down Bloor heading for the Bell building. He almost made it except for the sparrow that intervened at the last minute turning him to land right back on Baylie’s patio wall. Lather, rinse, repeat. This time Mel jumped down on Baylie’s patio and used that to get to the mezzanine and walk to Aberfoyle. Sheesh. He took another flight over the tennis courts and was now on the Falcon condos low and east. Again a flight low where he almost bounced off the top of a truck and he was back to the mezzanine.

All the while that this was going on Ferris decided to fledge unseen. While Bruce was being vigilant with Mel I was trying my best to watch my 4 at Osler and his 3 on the ledge using the webcam. Our best estimate puts the fledge around 3pm-ish. Bruce had Trish with him helping him out and off he went to find Ferris. He located him on the mezzanine wall between the west and center towers. There Ferris stayed and Bruce remained with him and keeping the nest ledge in view as well. At around 8pm Bruce called me for some help as he had not been able to check on Mel for fear of losing sight of Ferris or the nest. The Osler kids had just been fed twice by the parents and they were down for an early night so I headed back to Islington and Bloor to look for Mel. I scoured the Aberfoyle side of the building but was unable to see Mel on any of the leading edges. He was most likely down for the night. I met up with Bruce and waited until dusk to call it for the night.

Ferris and Mel are both low but both safe for the night. Monday (today) will most definitely be and adventure and Bruce will be down at dawn to ensure all play safe.

    Tracy Simpson Reports:

Bruce opened the watch today at Islington and Bloor at 5am with Mel believed to be on the mezzanine Aberfoyle side and Ferris on the same level on the Bloor St side. He was joined by Rob and Roger for the morning and with their help was able to locate Mel after his dawn flight on the 5th floor of the Kingsway on the Park condos. Shortly after discovering Mel, Ninja took his first flight from the nest ledge and landed up on top of the Center tower. Ferris then tried for home and realized he was way too low so he circled back and went somewhere on the low Bloor St businesses near The Squire pub. They began a search for him and in their wandering noticed that Ninja was not alone on the Center tower roof. Mel had taken another flight and was now on the roof with his brother. Excellent job!! Ferris remained out of sight and Glider lumbered off camera view for a nap. This was Bruce’s signal to grab a bite and rest before another round of Ferris hunting. No sooner was Bruce done eating than who should appear in the air but Ferris. He made for home but was way too low. He flumped into the glass and continued on. He flumped again and now realized that this wasn’t fun and he made for the Bell building. He was only one third of the way up when he did the bat on the wall and then slid down right beside Bruce. In the carrier with you Ferris until your release tonight!

Back on Eagle road everyone was still in place and napping for the afternoon. Mel and Ninja stayed on the centre tower all day and took turns laying down to nap while Glider stayed on the nest ledge. Once he got over the fact that his playmates were out having their own adventures he seemed to enjoy having all the food and room to himself. The evening was quiet up until the supper hour bell sounded. Mel decided that in the cooler evening air that high flights were in order. He was all over the place. Condos. Nest building roof. Centre tower. Back to the nest building roof. Flying like a pro and landing with confidence. Around 8pm the first sprinkles of rain began and that got both Ninja and Mel excited. A half a dozen scurrying flights around and both Mel and Ninja were now back on the nest ledge with Glider!! All three went down to the camera corner and laid down together for bed.

Ferris on the other hand needed to go back to his parents care and so after closing the Osler watch with all 4 on the ledge in bed I headed down for the release. Ferris was in a rather nasty mood in his carrier as he was hissing before I had even crossed the room to check him out. He was in perfect condition to go home. A check of the weather showed some thunder shower activity through the overnight with 15mm of rain. Ok Ferris my love, you’re having a bath. I took him up to the roof and put him in a corner near to shelter and opened the door… …ok. Out you. Now please. Nope. He wanted a piece of me before he left. I gently pulled the towel out that he was standing on and he came out full of baby peregrine grrrrrr. He wanted me to give Bruce, his rescuer, a message and so he wrote it down on one of my fingers with his talon. Message received!! I left him on the roof about 30 minutes before the rain began to sort himself out. When the rain finally arrived he didn’t just get a bath but a full body scrub down!! This morning he has already taken two flights; one to the centre tower roof and a second to a ledge on the back side at Aberfoyle at nest ledge level where he and Mel are currently chilling out and preening. With both Mel and Ferris in view Bruce did a quick check of the camera and had both Ninja and Glider on the nest tray. Great job everybody!! All four young are high and safe!!

I've been trying to catch up on all these fledgelings...and was very sad to read today that Glider did not survive a collision. Carly, I am so, so sorry...

Tracy posted this report this morning...

    July 04, 2015 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre
    Tracy Simpson Reports:

It is never an easy post to write when we experience a loss at any site. We watch them as they grow, band and name them, keep them safe during fledge (as best as any human can) and marvel at them as they learn the art of being a peregrine. Today we discovered the loss of one of our stars at Islington and Bloor, Glider had struck a building and was recovered from the west tower mezzanine.

Paragon Security contacted Bruce regarding a peregrine discovered by an office worker down on the lower mezzanine. Bruce called me and not knowing it’s condition we began to dispatch the closest members of our watch team to the site. Rob responded and like lightning was off to the towers to take a look. He met up with security and they took him up to all of the tower mezzanine levels that he systematically cleared. No bird was discovered at that time and so he thanked them for their vigilance and phone call after which he headed off to work. A second call was placed to Bruce that told him a level was missed during Rob’s tour. The security guard missed a section and that is where the bird was. Marion had arrived at Canada Square to take over the watch from me and I headed down to the site.

I checked in with security when I arrived and there was a worker from the crew renovating the west tower exterior at the desk. Before I could go up to the mezzanine he had an important story he wanted to share. He told me that two days ago the big black bird (O’Connor) was sitting on the west tower roof retaining wall looking down. He and his colleague slowly exited onto the roof, usually OC takes off at this point, and walked over to their swing stage. She didn’t stop looking down at the mezzanine area. She was transfixed. When she finally did notice their presence, she took off. The gentleman telling me this story was certain she was looking down at Glider and thought that she looked rather sad. Just the way she was standing and looking down is what made him believe this.

We headed up to the mezzanine and then down to a lower sub roof on the south side where I found Glider who had clearly hit the building at high speed. I recovered him and brought him back for processing.

It’s always great having boys at a nest site as they get going so quickly and seem to do so well right out of the gate. That in part is the problem. They do so well so fast that they get rough during play and cocky in flight. One little mistake is all it takes.

I want to thank Paragon Security and CBRE for their quick reaction, care and attention to Glider. Also thanks to Bruce and Rob for helping to be a part of this recovery effort and everyone at the watch who was a part of getting wee Glider this far. As I left both adults were on site and I did not see the other three boys. We will be back soon to check on them.

:sorrow: little Glider...
