You can hear the passion and pain, frustration in Chad and Chris' writings. Thank you C&C for all that you do for the falcons. We are all indebted to you - I am very sorry about the chick. Perhaps it would be possible for a re-clutch? I really think that the tray needs to be rebuilt so that this tragedy does not happen again.

Thank you all for your coverage of this sad couple of days - maybe the authorities will learn from this experience holiday or no holiday Little chick RIP

I really, really, really, really hate this....and am hoping this means nothing...Matrix noticed a "not Boomer" male at the nest tray today...and posted pics on FB, then shared that info with C & C...who were able to ID this male.

Please see their post in the CMNH forum:

I find it encouraging that this male has been "all over" at different nest sites, so maybe he won't stick around here for long. Sure hope to see Boomer back here soon!

Great observations, Matrix!

Today's post on CMNH forum by C & C

At work and can't post here from my cell phone, but we were able to see a peregrine perched on the corner of the AmeriTrust Building on Superior on Tuesday from the trail bordering the Hope Memorial Bridge. This is around the area of the Bohn Apartments, where there has been a nesting pair for years. The Bohn is being renovated and there is scaffolding covering over the nest balcony, so we believe that the Bohn pair tried nesting on a nearby building (and we did see a male with a black/red left leg band on a neighboring building the last time that we checked the Bohn Building for eggs). Spence (the male from Bohn) is now banded black/red (since being rescued following his entanglement in balloon string). We're thinking that Stacker may have come in to play with both nests, as there has been a male with black/red bands spotted a couple places a few times prior to nesting that we originally thought of as Spence(including once on the Tower City parking garage that one person willingly shared on our FB page). There used to be more interplay among area falcons (I-90 Bridge, Bohn, ArcelorMittal) at a time when the TT site was relatively stable. So, even though it's possible that Stacker has overtaken Boomer at this site it is also likely that this site remains influx as Stacker and other competing peregrines check out their options. As mentioned by CMNH forum members, Newton is an aging female and challenges for her in particular are anticipated. Of course, the more that we see and can confirm that it's Stacker and not Boomer we'll further suspect that Stacker is taking over this territory.

As for the cam views, I know it's difficult with only one cam and I agree that it's tough to distinguish color. From what Chad Steele posted on our page it appears that he lightened the image to be able to get a better sense of the band color. Newton is looking fairly distinguishable from the males even though she's "thinner" looking due to head/body molting. She has a distinct buffy forehead (the lighter part above the beak) and more open cheek patches than either male. What I noticed in my brief encounter with Stacker is that he is very dark-headed with more of a hood than precise malar markings. Please feel free to add in other distinguishing characteristics that you all may notice, as it will help us to keep track. Here's the rundown as I see it as I try to check cams from time to time:

Newton: black/green left leg band; buffy forehead; more space between malars and/or open cheek patches

Stacker: black/red left leg band with purple federal band; very dark head; "hooded" look rather than precise malars

Boomer: He looks pretty similar to Stacker, but seems his head doesn't appear as dark or as fully hooded (he has some indistinct cheek patches); Of course, the best differentiating marker would be his black/green left leg bands if color can be determined by the cam images.

As I said, please feel free to add any observations that would help us all to tell them apart on cam! We want to enjoy the active nest sites all that we can before those juvies disperse rather than spending much time at the TT, although that includes putting in a great deal of time at the nearby HMB site. If anyone has a specific concern regarding a cam sighting please don't hesitate to reach us, as chances are one or both of us could be nearby and can check. For those of you whom we haven't met directly, we don't post our contact information publicly, but Cecilia has our phone numbers if we need to be reached.
