Cubbie updates :)
The giant panda team continues to closely monitor the two cubs and Er Shun around the clock. With the assistance of two giant panda experts from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China, the team continues to twin-swap the cubs. This not only enables Er Shun to nurse and bond with each cub, but also provides the Zoo's Wildlife Health Centre and Wildlife Care staff with the opportunity to weigh each cub and conduct regular health checks.

While there has been some weight fluctuations with both cubs, which is very common with newborns, both of them are currently stable. Yesterday, the cubs were observed nursing from Er Shun and if the team notices that one or both of the cubs are not suckling from her, the team is able to collect milk from Er Shun and give it to the cubs extremely carefully, by bottle.

Oh my heavens. They are adorable and it looks like the larger one is encouraging his little sibling by putting its arm around the other. :5val:

After an upside down bath and a little cubbie shuffleboard, Bei gets to cuddle with Mommie and nurse. :loveheart: And then he is on the move!

Update from the National Zoo:

Image

"Experienced Mom Mei Xiang Nurtures Bei Bei
This panda update was written by keeper Nicole MacCorkle.

Many people have been asking if Mei Xiang is being gentle enough when she moves Bei Bei in and out of the den. Don't worry, she is!

It is difficult to comprehend how a mother panda's jaws, which are able to crush a piece of bamboo with ease, can also be extremely gentle when picking up a cub, but they really are. Mei Xiang is a skilled panda mother, and like other panda mothers, she picks up Bei Bei in her mouth, but doesn't use her teeth.

It certainly appears to be a struggle at times, especially as Bei Bei gets bigger and less cooperative. While it looks less than graceful (anyone who has tried to carry a sleeping or uncooperative toddler can probably relate), the process is gentler than it looks. Although he is often being pulled across the floor, the floor is smooth and won't hurt him. Also, remember that panda cubs are sturdy little creatures, and Bei Bei even more so than his older siblings before him!

If you're wondering if Mei Xiang has brought Bei Bei outside the den earlier than she did with Bao Bao or Tai Shan, you're right! Mei Xiang is more experienced with each cub, and like any experienced mother, she tends to push each milestone a bit earlier.

Tai Shan was first out of the den at about three and a half months of age. Bao Bao was moved from the den for the first time at about two-and-a-half months. Bei Bei was first brought out of the den when he was about a month-and-a-half old.

It is always tricky to make an assumption about why an animal chooses to do something, like take her cub on a short trip outside of the den. In this case, though, our best guess is that Mei moves the cubs out of the den to introduce them to the world outside of the place they were born. And she has moved each cub when she feels that they are ready for that developmental milestone.

Every giant panda is an individual, and other females may choose to do things at a different pace from Mei. However, she has proven her competence as a mother over and over again, so we let her lead us in the best way to manage her cubs."

Thanks, gigi, for keeping the rest of us up to date on the pandas. I don't have much time to check the panda cam, so it's nice to come here to the forum to catch up on all the panda news and see cute little Bei Bei's latest adventures.

It's nice to know that Bei Bei survived his tumble from the rocks unhurt.

Update From the National Zoo
"Bei Bei Weighs 9.5 Pounds!"

Image

"This panda update was written by keeper Nicole MacCorkle.
Photos by the National Zoo

When last weighed on Friday October 30, Bei Bei was 9.5 pounds! Since he is growing so rapidly, we know for certain that he is getting enough to eat. However, Bei Bei still occasionally fusses after he nurses. It is possible that Mei Xiang, like many mammal mothers, occasionally ends the nursing session before Bei Bei is ready. That causes him to vocalize, to voice his displeasure.

We've also seen Bei Bei get hiccups more than previous cubs, though it isn't a cause for concern. It is possible that he is suckling with such enthusiasm that he is taking in a lot more air than his older siblings, causing the hiccups. Unlike our moms probably did when we were young, Mei Xiang does not burp Bei Bei. The hiccups usually subside naturally after a short time.

Bei Bei continues to make attempts at crawling and walking. He spends a lot of time scooting around in circles, resting briefly, then resuming his efforts. It sort of looks like he's swimming in the den. Judging by milestones hit by past cubs, we hope to see Bei Bei taking his first steps by the end of November. "

"Bao Bao Update

Like brother, like sister... Bao Bao, as her older brother Tai Shan before her, has a bit of a reputation in the panda house for consistently being extremely messy. (Giant pandas can be quite messy eaters.) So it seems like most days when the keepers arrive, Bao Bao has trashed her room.

Soon, the pandas will switch from eating a mixture of bamboo leaves and culm (the woody central stalk of the plant) to almost exclusively culm. In the summer and fall, photosynthesis stores sugar and protein in the bamboo leaves, so giant pandas opt for the nutrient-rich leaves. However, in the winter and spring, when bamboo produces shoots, nutrients are stored in the culm, so giant pandas favor the protein-packed stalk. The switch in diets makes all of the panda enclosures, both indoor and outdoor, much more time consuming to clean. Keepers will be cleaning up bamboo "shreds" for about an extra hour or two each day in the not-so-distant future.

Additionally, Bao Bao received a special enrichment treat this week: a pumpkin! She had no trouble sinking her teeth into the squash and rolling it around her enclosure. Enrichment like this is vital to providing a stimulating environment for Bao Bao. A pumpkin is a novel object that challenges her to use her teeth and claws naturally and enhances her well-being."
