Feeding time. The 3rd one kept trying to get up to eat, but kept falling over. By the fourth pic, he was able to get a bite & seemed to be strong enough to stand up & keep eating! (#3 is the one on the left.) You can tell this is a new mom by the mess she's making of the kids. She seemed to do well making sure everybody got as much as they wanted though.

I find it hard to believe this mom is 6 years old. Is there any way to verify that?

Some of her back feathers have a brownish tint to them. It just makes me wonder.

I also find it surprising. In reading the posts on the cam page, it was their local biologist who identified the female & where she came from.

Yes, but they don't mention the band numbers. This could be a different female than the one they identified.

At least Mom seems to understand what's inside the eggs now. That first hatch was rough!

This is the 4th nest I've seen or heard of a new mom's actions like this. They didn't seem to understand what the little wiggly thing was that broke their precious egg & seemed to want to keep the chick & eggs far apart. By the time the second chick hatched, they understood that the eggs contained their babies & the babies were the precious thing they were guarding. Not all new peregrine moms go through this, though, because Durand at Columbus didn't, but it seems like this is the usual reaction. It is very unpleasant to be watching a cam where the first egg hatches to a new mom. :egg15:

She picked it up and started to carry it out the door at one point, then turned around and brought it back. I was so scared this was going to be a repeat of Pittsburgh. I think once the chick's down started to fluff up and the chick uncurled itself she figured out what it was.

I tuned in right after a feed before mom came back from disposing of the yuckovers. I could only see 3 chicks so I don't know whether the last egg hatched yet. The 2 chicks whose crops I could see had HUGE crops, so they're being fed well!

Thanks for the pics and comments here...

Catwoman (and others who were around), do you remember Red Girl's first hatch at Wilmington? I remember Reenie calling me, afraid RG was gonna kill it...RG had no clue what that tiny, wet thing was: picking it up, dropping it, dragging it, then ignoring it and going back to incubating...that poor little thing was alone for how long? We weren't sure if it would live..and if it did if anything had been broken...Nail biter for sure!! BTW, it was fine...but we weren't hee hee

I do remember that, but fortunately I was at work & didn't know about it until things calmed down. I know those of you who watched while it was happening were just horrified so I'm glad I missed it. Red Girl was the first, Deborah at Osh Kosh was second, & Barb at Chesapeake last year was the third. Unfortunately, I'm sure there will be more but it will help if people know that its pretty normal & will likely stop before a chick is injured. :girlyes:

this is why I wish people would cut Hope some slack . I really do not believe she killed her chicks . but I will not get into that again. Just saying. sometimes they have no role models and Durand at Columbus was no picnic ,her first few hatches, she pulled them out before they should have been,
Every one is different and just imagine what we do not see.

I'm with you Bev. They don't have any role models for this so the first few years, sometimes more, are going to be rough. We had a male at James River that did nothing really, for years, and he had a great experienced mate. We watched many chicks starve. Now they have successfully raised several 4 chick clutches, it takes practice. The old experienced falcons are always the best parents.

Thanks for the video, Carolyn! She does a great job of making sure all mouths are fed. :7val:

In the second capture, I saw the pink leg sticking out from under mom & wondered if the 4th egg hatched, then I realized when I saw Carolyn's video that it hadn't.

Jersey City
(I haven't checked here in a while - every time I did check, the box and area were empty.)
Well, I checked this morning a couple of times (it looks like the top cam is frozen, with a falcon in the pic!), and this is what I found in the second cam pic:
11:30am

Of course, right after posting, went back and the box is empty!
