6/17... am
I had to look away a few times this morning, parent has a hard time in the
nest with the bowl being so small - stepping on little one.

:girlsad3: I believe the chick was just jumped on by one of the parents trying to get out of the nest. It stepped initially on the railing that was unstable and fell/jumped into the nest bowl! Both parents were in the nest. The eggs kinda scattered.

There just is not as much room between the railing and the nest bowl as you usually see with other osprey nests.

:egg16: I wonder if the steel horizontal bar with the 2 vertical rods has influenced this design ... EDIT: And a later start than normal to building a new nest ...

I saw that as well. It looked like Dad lost his balance and his talons landed very hard on baby. A few minutes later, Mom did the same thing to the chick. Mom seemed very agitated following all this. I don’t know how the baby can survive much more of this stuff even though it is not intentional. I agree with Beth’s earlier observation about “bowl being so small”. I think that may be the cause. I can’t imagine how crowded it will be after 2 more kids hatch!

Johnisaly, go to international osprey and pull up Uk Loch of the Lowes and look @ the most famous and successful osprey nest in the world and compare ...

Also, Hog Island in the USA is another good example ... Note the level border between the nest bowl and the railing ...

I checked them out. Wow. What a huge difference. Wish we could have those parents fly in to have a quick nest building consult with this young Columbus couple.

I agree. Hopefully this young couple will learn from this.

This is taking a toll on me - I had to look away several times this afternoon.
I worry little one will get hurt :(

I do think the condo they picked isn't the best layout.
AND they are new parents...

Thank for all the posts Swinwk and Johnisaly (!)

:flirty: I'll feel the "bestest" after we see it eat and move more and it's 1-2 days from now! :5val:

Ditto Swinwk...

It is warm today so she is off the eggs more.
I would be ok with one baby ...

Just had a look at the chick and Mom. (I wish they'd move that stick.) Mom did a great job of gently walking over to her (talons curled up) and gently sat to brood. Eggs look intact - but was hard to see. I also wish she'd move the empty shell piece out of the egg cup.
Bless her heart - she'll figure it out!

A pip in each of the 2 eggs! Look near the bottom of each:

Chick looks alert this morning.

Mama was up/down, up/down, up/down, fidgeting ALL night long. She must have felt/heard the activity going on below.

Dad needs to drag himself out of bed and show up with the morning sushi.
