I know I'm going over board, but what if I had put to the right of the banner instead of "Peregrine Falcons, etc, I put "where eggs get crushed, storms kill babies, siblings eat siblings, parents feed kids to others, babies suffocate in egg, death and mayhem in the nest, etc."...yikes, I'd never watch.[/b]

Sorry, but this made me laugh :teehee: You might attract a totally new audience though .... :egg7:

I have learned to be more "distant" to happenings at all the nests I watch. We humans can not and must not forget that life isn't a "Disney movie", not a fairy tale where they all live happily ever after.
What happened last year here was unusual, surprising, maybe even shocking, but we MUST assume the falcons know what they are doing. I firmly believe something triggered Hope's action with that chick. This year may be completely different as both she and Terzo are well established residents now.
And even if she were to eat one of her chicks again, we have to assume that she does what SHE thinks is right. For all we know she may be able to detect birth defects right away, and by killing and eating it she prevents a waste of resources, which is extremely important to wildlife.

:laugh You got that right, DEF....and thanks for your perspective....are you sure these nests aren't associated with Disney?

12:40ish - Did not see Terzo, but heard him come in for an exchange. Hope is on eggs and would not leave.

And Kate tweeted out about 4 hours ago:

"A pip in a peregrine eggs at Pitt. (Caution about watching! Female killed 2 young at hatching last year)"

I wanted to say, last year, when a pip started, I think she helped it along by removing shell (which we know can be dangerous for the hatchling). If we've got a good sized pip and I can definitely hear the chick when she re-positions, I think that's a good sign.

1PM ET: Hope chupping - very alert, looking up. Sometimes, I can't tell with the feedback on this cam if there is a 2nd up there, or if I'm hearing a scratchy echo. Regardless, she's watching something.

1:04 - Terzo enters nest for exchange/look but she's holding tight to eggs. He's in the far right corner waiting for her to move... Off he goes... no exchange.

And now, I have to run errands and will be away from cam... Darn!

mwplay, I saw Hope call Terzo-
he came in - but she wouldnt get up - as you said.
I thot it odd.

It looked as if the Gulf tower falcon nibbled the shell to help chick hatch.
I thot it odd. Glad you mentioned that.

Last year Hope was stressed.
Remember, her mate died - she snagged Terzo.
Didnt she have 3 eggs by Erie - and one by Terzo?

We do strange things when stressed

Hi Shepard. I think the vocalizing back and forth was her talking to Terzo. He came in to relieve, but since hatch is so close, maybe it was to say, "get us some food - times close".

As for the stress, yes - I agree. I think that she appears much calmer to me this year. And last year, if I remember correctly, on one egg, she literally ripped the egg shell open once it pipped, not just nibbling on the shell. I know that they often eat the shell after hatch, or once the shell is opened completely, they may move one of the halves off & eat to replenish calcium. The concern is if they prematurely pull the chick out of the egg, there may be the possibility of open blood vessels which can cause the chick to bleed out. I know there are some on the board who have information regarding this because it happened at another site several years ago. Prior to that post, I did not know it would be an issue.

PS.. Just noticed, I think Terzo is on eggs now - 3:00pm ET.

This happened one year at Richmond. I have a pic somewhere of Harriet picking the shell up with the chick still attached to the yolk sac until it separated and dropped out of the shell.

I'm sorry to report she's picking at the eggs again. Picked one up and carried it. She stopped and just put egg back under her.

It's got a pretty big crack in it, so shouldn't be much longer. It's almost like she's getting excited and wants to help it out.

And again she just picked up an egg...

The way she keeps picking it up and putting it back, it's like she knows she should not be doing this, but is excited/impatient to get the chick out.

Maybe she thinks she's helping it. This last time, it seemed like she was about to mantle the egg, but ended up putting it back under her.

If you watched Wilmington with Red Girl's first clutch (and maybe the second, too)..this is basically what she did. The major difference is RG's first hatch was almost out of the shell, but when she picked the chick up, the shell fell off. Then RG completely removed it from the bowl, ignored it, and returned to incubating the remaining eggs.
