Thanks SGB. I really feel sorry for her because I don't think she means to hurt her offspring - not in this situation. I really think she's trying to help it.

I have to get final preparations done for my last class of the year tonight. Trying to get goody bags together for the kids. I'll be in and out of cam view for the next hour, then offline for bit.

I'm really hoping we have a good outcome here.

Sorry to say, I think a repeat of last year.

What we are hearing is the remaining eggs.

She is consuming it now.

I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think the baby survived what she was trying to do...I saw her try and pry the bottom half of the shell off the baby and she couldn't get it off....then she turned her back to us...I see the bottom shell is off...

Your not wrong. It did not survive. I saw it's lifeless head. She consumed it and is now eating the shell.

I have my sound off, but you are right, she appears to be consuming it..

She really was trying to pry off the bottom shell with her talons and that was probably the beginning of the end for the baby.

Now, I'm afraid she is picking at the next pipped egg that is making the noise.

Very sad....here's hoping the other 3 eggs can survive...Poor Hope..for whatever reason, this process just doesn't click with her...here's hoping it clicks in sooner rather than later.

I saw what was going on too. I was hoping for a better outcome. I don't think HOPE realizes that the chicks need to enter the world on their own. She hears the peeps and I wonder if she thinks it is a cry for help. Maybe her maternal instincts are so strong over what she needs to do. So sad.

That's an interesting view. She did seem rather frantic when trying to get the shell off the baby...maybe not frantic, but urgent? Who knows what her thought process is/was...just so sad...

I am crushed. This is so sad. I was hoping it would be different. Same scenario as last year. She would carry the eggs during hatching and pick at them. All that manipulation must unwillingly injure the chicks. Bev is probably right when she says the chicks last year were either dead or dying after hatch. I suppose now we know why. The only chick that survived hatched while Terzo was on egg duty. I am devastated for these poor babies. So much invested in these eggs only to have this happen is such a loss. Hugs to everyone here.
