I am watching. I didn't see the eyass leave the nest box. I am hoping it is simply scared and exhausted. I've watched banding here for several years and formed the highest opinion of Glenn Stewart. He's never had trouble going back up. He kept his feet off the ground the whole time he was scrambling. I know he'd wanted to band Tuesday, but City Hall paperwork was slow coming.

If its Glenn Stewart, I'd be surprised that he would leave an injured chick without care. I saw it flapping its way to the nestbox & it wasn't good. I only hope you're right.

It appear the the chick has a broken leg. He trying to hop into the nestbox, but unsuccessfully. Well, we know from Polly in Montreal that chicks can survive with a broken leg.

Terka, I don't know unless he didn't see it. I have nothing but respect for Glenn. I find it surprising that he knowingly leave an injured chick, providing he knew about it.

The Mecury News

Quote:
It’s two girls and a boy for San Jose City Hall’s resident peregrine falcons, Clara and Fernando El Cohete. But biologist Glenn Stewart warns this may be the last year people can watch the birds’ behavior online unless the aging webcam gets some serious help.

Stewart, from UC-Santa Cruz’s Predatory Bird Research Group, rappelled down city hall’s tower Friday morning to place bands on the falcon eyases and determine their gender. While there were four eggs produced this season, only three hatched — and one of the chicks appears to be having problems early on.

“One of the females looks like it has some neurological issue,” Stewart said. “It’s having trouble staying upright. It’s a wait-and-see thing. Not every egg hatches, not every baby survives. That’s part of the deal.”

Oh no, that's not good about the little girl :egg15:

Clara is 12 years old now.

I wonder if her age has anything to do with this. Didn't Dorothy have 1 that had neurological issues towards the end of her breeding years? I thought his name was Silver or Solo?

I just looked back through some of the posts on the Yahoo forum - I guess they noticed an issue on Wednesday that seemed to resolve itself by end of day. Glenn thought maybe a neurological issue or something the chick ate (toxin) causing an issue.

I just want to remind everyone that Glenn does not work for the State. I'm not 100% positive, but I don't believe he has any authority to remove a bird. Again, not 100% sure, just want to make people aware if they wonder why he would not remove the injured/ill chick.

ps: Cat, remember Tesh back in Rochester 2014? When the banders left she was laying there not moving - frozen with legs in the air and we all thought she had passed? That's what reading about this little one reminded me of.

Yes, she fainted but then was just fine. :eggthumb:

I saw the chick as it headed to the nestbox, much to my dismay. I thought the chicks back was broken--she had a heck of a time getting there. My heart goes out to this girl.
:loveheart2:

Thanks for the reminder mwplay!

I hate to see this. Don't watch so much anymore here. I know years ago when Chick # 4 died and then Blue died, I wrote to Glenn and asked if there would be help for Blue and he said no, which was what I feared. I Don't agree with this at all. Once they fledge and need help if they are grounded, they will rescue. I have not noticed that the chick was ill, but not watching very much. Won't watch anymore this year.
