Well, terzo brought what looks like a starling...unfortunately, he didn't defeather...and Hope is having a time of it..

Short feed. #4 was up at the beginning before the feed even started..(as Hope was trying to defeather.), but next time I looked, it was back down.

2 and 3 ate, #4 didn't

I've gotta get ready for work soon..Hopefully somebody else can catch a feed to see if #4 gets anything.

I thought I had recorded the starling situation, but I didn't (too much else going on elsewhere). I didn't see Terzo bring it. Hope tried to start the feed immediately then realized she was only getting a beak full of feathers. She drug it to the back corner to defeather, but the chicks' chirps brought her back to the pile. A couple of times, the chick pile got bonked with the starling as she was trying to decide what to do. At one point she headed to the front. I thought she might leave to go defeather, but she changed her mind and returned to the chick pile..she looked like she was trying to be careful. I missed stuff as I was trying to record Columbus.

well, I found a short vid of Hope and the starling..this was only a small piece of the prefeed..

I just watched a feed close to end at 9:30AM ET & the littlest one was fed - well. All were.

What terrific news on 3 chicks! Congrats! I suspect Hope will be a great Mom going forward. She was very attentive to her one surviving chick last year. As mentioned by several here, her problem is with the hatching process. She just freaks out. I do think she interprets the chirping from the unborn chick as a sign of distress. Unfortunately, her assistance in the process is a detriment. I am so relieved that hatching is over. A big sigh of relief! Kudos to Terzo!

3 at Pitt
This morning there are three chicks.
This morning at 8am Terzo delivered a woodpecker for breakfast. As Hope prepared to feed the chicks, we could see three tiny heads.

I am really relieved about the remaining chicks. :flirty:

Also, does someone remember what the tiercels name was at Cobb Island--the one who who spent most of the time with the chicks while the mom was having nails done or what have you? Terzo reminds of him. He is seldom gone for long & then right back to chicks/eggs. :clap:

just food for thought:

none of us know Hopes situations at her other site. She may have had to make sure hatching was quick due to challenges etc. and last year at this site, if you remember, she was challenged and Terzo was not forth coming with food. (of course becasue of his background he is perceived the hero.) So her minds remembers these things. She had to do a lot of hunting herself last year, and maybe at her other site also. YOu have to watch 10/7 to really know what happens at a site.
I do nto perceive to know all, but I never judge or think any falcon is nuts or bad. We know not what the circumstances are. now I am done

I don't believe anyone here is making Hope out to be nuts or bad, but objectively, she clearly has a problem with the hatching process that occurred 2 yrs in a row at the Cathedral. The cause is unknown and may never be known. As for Terzo, I don't think he is being thought of as a hero due to his background. Of 8 hatches total, he was the reason 2 chicks that hatched at this site survived. The other 2 surviving chicks hatched during the night. He clearly stepped in during the hatch of chick #3 this season and he was present for the only hatch that survived last year.

Hope is a great mom once the chicks hatch. She proved that last year and she is proving it this year. What's done is done. If Hope is still at the Cathedral next year, we'll see whether her behavior with hatching continues. If it is indeed a learned behavior from past experiences at the bridge, it should improve.

I think all views and observations are valid here as long as they are respectful. In reality, many DID/DO think Hope is/was nuts. All you have to do is read back through the comments from this year and last. Some do not. (also documented here) Not all in either "corner" are members of BCAW, (BTW) She does have difficulty with the hatching process, and we can only hypothesize the reasons why.

Some have raised Terzo to Hero status. That's not a criticism or a bad thing, but it has been insinuated here in prior comments.

So far, she is proving to be a good mom (now that the kids have hatched) and Terzo a good Dad. I certainly do hope it stays that way.

do nto have time today for photos but I watched 2 very nice feeds. all got fed well. hope was so gentle as she fed each one. :15heartbeat:

and Terzo was there for one feed. He must have taken notes from VM at deMOrtel. From the day VM took over from Pa, he has loved being in box when VV fed. the chicks. His first yer, she even gave him a few bites. We all know how experienced VV is. , all of us world wide laugh at how he is.
