They're long in the beak, but the state Capitol's resident peregrine falcons are still getting frisky.

A single egg unexpectedly appeared Sunday in the longtime nest of falcons Ally and 19/K. Ally laid a second egg Tuesday night.

Joel Jorgensen, nongame bird program manager for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, says it's the latest he's ever seen a falcon in this state lay her first egg of the spring.

"It was an Easter surprise."

The couple has now produced eggs for 13 straight years.

Even with two eggs, Jorgensen said he's "not super optimistic" the falcons will see a hatchling this year.

However, he said, "This pair continues to prove me wrong."

Ally laid five eggs last year; one hatched more than a month later after an uncharacteristically long incubation period.

Falcon eggs typically hatch 30 to 35 days after they are laid.

Adult falcons continue to breed until they die, but they become less fertile as they age.

At 16 years old, 19/K is close to the lifespan of a wild peregrine. He had a rough year last year, spending about four months in rehabilitation after being found with a dislocated elbow in his left wing.

But Ally is only 13, and could still mate with a different male if 19/K dies or is chased off by a young stud.

The pair's most recent fledgling, Dinan, hasn't been spotted since he left the nest last summer.

Their previous offspring have been sighted as far away as Texas.

Boreus, a 2007 fledgling, and Nemaha, a 2009 fledgling, paired up in Topeka, Kansas. Mintaka, hatched in 2010, is the resident male at the Woodmen Tower in Omaha. Lewis, from 2012, has been sighted near Houston, and Clark, also from 2012, is now bre
eding at the Omaha Public Power District station in north Omaha

Hopefully everything goes well with this pair. I think males stay fertile longer? Seems like other falcons this age are still productive.

:hmmmm

According to the Peregrine Falcons Lincoln Ne Fb page 19K has stopped helping Alley with the eggs. They said she has had to leave the eggs and get her own dinner because he's not bringing food to the nest and
there are five eggs now.

IMHO Papa seems fine, he flies, he eats, he preens, he poops, he does everything he usually does. He is just not helping with the eggs.

4 hours is not long enough to watch. and you have to go every day if you are to learn what is happening.

at one of our sites this year, our male is an excellent male and last few days, female is sometimes 6 - 7 hours without relief. but she does go out for a few breaks. a few days he was in only in for a few minutes.

We watched, as our male sat on aerial and did not relieve female . the female may have to hunt for the time being.

so now I am going to say, we have been down at site 10/7 as there has been a challenge. And our male is on guard. ( I am not broadcasting this, but saying it here to show what happens). things seem to have settled down after almost a week. bu t the male is not going to incubate if there is a challenger in territory. They will be on guard .

they also will not hunt as much, as they do not want to be away from territory. We found this out at Genesse a few years ago. We had not seen our male bring in food or incubate so we took a trip out and stayed all day. sure enough, problems. thankfully it was solved in a few days. and the female would make quick trips out an bring back smaller prey items .

I swore I would not give opinions anymore, but just trying to bring light on situation. It may not be this at all, but more watching is warranted here. things are sometimes not what they seem

makes sense . because he will be concentrating on keeping area safe. He may not be in top form
so female will have to hunt for food as he would not be ale to risk, staying away form area to do so.

Nobody on the eggs this evening...Even if there were an intruder still around, I think she would be on the eggs tonight...(unless we have in intruding pair that are keeping both of them busy...) Even during the chaos of Union, dad spent time with the eggs...and we even saw Eole pop in when Spirit was having to defend...They obviously know something that we don't..definitely a mystery!! :girlsad3:

FB post from Jeanne, 9 hrs ago:

The eggs have been uncovered since 630am. I can only guess Mama needed to hunt and eat and now is still away. Yesterday she hung out with Papa most the afternoon and they were also uncovered. I do not know why any of this is happening. It is nature and can not be explained. Everytime I see Papa he looks ok but for some reason he quit going to the nestbox after last Monday and it would be very difficult for Mama to do this on her own. I am glad they both seem to be ok but I think the chances of us having any hatches this year is very slim.

Jeanne's response to bev.'s post about intruders.

I have wittnessed 3 intruders since last Saturday night. The first was on camera at night Saturday night, the 2nd was chased away by Mama Sunday afternoon while Papa was in the box and the 3rd appeared to be chased away by both just last Friday eve. So yes that is very possible. All was calm yesterday while I was there.
