Thanks Loza. Here are some more pics from yesterday that I didn't get a chance to post. The kids have been on the wing for 2 weeks now and continue to come home to eat, rest, and sleep at night. It is really nice to see the whole family sleeping together in the nest tree every night. Such a treat to keep seeing these eaglets.

1156am - Juliet had brought in a fish. In the middle of her meal Spirit arrived to snatch it from her. Here's Spirit with his fish. Juliet stood guard on the look-out branch while he ate.
Image

1224pm -Spirit finished lunch and Juliet came in to do some housekeeping and clean up any leftovers.
Image

437pm - Romeo looking handsome.
Image

448pm - Sky
Image

450pm - Sky was hungry and was squeeeing for some dinner.
Image

514pm - Romeo was in the mood for some love. :15heartbeat:
Image

515pm - Both kids arrive home after a fly about. They arrived one right after the other. Both parents were in the nest tree and it was real sweet to see Romeo greet each eaglet with vocals as they arrived in the nest. :15heartbeat:

This afternoon Juliet brought in a fish for a late lunch. Spirit mantled it, but lost it to his older sister, Sky. Here Sky is eating while Spirit waits to see if she will leave him any. Not!! These kids eat the entire fish now in one sitting.

233pm - Sky eating on the right as Spirit waits patiently for scraps.

235pm - Sky in the nest and Spirit on the branch behind her.

:5winter5: With a day off from work today due to snow (our 3rd nor'easter in 10 days), I had a chance to check in on this eagle family. These kids are like two peas in a pod. They do everything together. It really is precious.

131pm - Both kids returned to the nest together for some R&R after their adventures in the Hamlet. Both gave love nips to one another other. Sky is on the right. :flirty:
Image

135pm - Time to rest. Sky is on the bottom and she was allopreening her brother. Like mother, like daughter. In this pic, she was running her beak along the edge of her brother's wing feather.
Image

205pm - Nap time is over. Spirit on the right.
Image

211pm - Beautiful Sky.
Image

218pm - More rest needed. Spirit is on the left. These two really like close contact with one another.
Image

742pm - All came home for the evening. Both kids were very vocal at sundown. Both Romeo and Juliet returned home empty taloned, which the kids were not happy about. Any movement by a parent, resulted in squeeeeing from the kids....in stereo. The noise went on for a looooooong time. No fish dinner tonight! Four fish were delivered for the day and Mom & Dad felt that was more than enough. Time to start thinking about fishing for themselves!
Image

815pm - Both kids tucked in for the night in the nest tree. Both parents were also in the tree. I understand that Romeo's presence in the tree is a bit unusual at this stage of the nesting season, but there has been a pesky barred owl in the area since nesting started. Both eaglets and Juliet have been knocked off their perches during sleep. The owl must be nesting nearby and is persistent in trying to get this eagle family to move on. Stay safe little ones!

:1snowmancarrot: Thanks Bev. Fortunately spring snows melt. Most of what we got yesterday is mostly gone, but all the pooling water froze last night. Crazy weather. Colder than usual for us in NY. My poor Hyacinth. It broke ground and I am so worried the flower buds froze. The same thing happened last year. Ugh!

We are really getting a treat this year with this eagle family. The kids keep coming back to the nest to rest, eat, and sleep unlike in previous years. The American Eagle Foundation is not sure if this is due to the owl in the area or if the parents recall the disappearance of Peace from the nest last year due to the rescue. Romeo does not usually sleep in the nest tree this late in the season. He is usually in a "sleeping" tree nearby. After Peace was removed from the nest last year, Romeo spent quite a bit of time looking for him. These birds have remarkable memories and I suppose we will never know why the behavior is different this year, but we are all enjoying it while it lasts. :loveheart2:

PS: Spring is on the way. You can see in the above pics that the deciduous trees are coming into leaf in northern Florida. It won't be long now for the rest of us up north.

:sham3: Thanks Loza. Happy St. Patrick's Day!

The kids are 14 wks old and on the wing for 3 wks. Other than getting knocked off their perches at night by that pesky barred owl, the kids are doing great. Today, they were away from the nest most of the day...out and about on adventures in the Hamlet. At days end, Juliet brought her 2 hungry teenagers home to the nest with a fish dinner. Sky grabbed the fish, but I understand Spirit complained and Mom ended up taking the fish back and beak fed both eaglets. Dinner was filling. Full tummies for both eaglets before bed.

658pm - Sky watching the sunset and sporting a full crop after dinner.
Image

700pm - Once Juliet fed the kids their dinner, she headed off for some TLC and a good bath. She returned quite wet and perched with puffed feathers and droopy wings to dry out.
Image

709pm - Spirit was vocal as Juliet began to preen. Here he popped up from under the nest into cam view.
Image

725pm - Romeo was the last one to join the family. Juliet is preening while Romeo is perched with mud on his face from the other day. He could use a good bath!! One of the kids is to his right.
Image

727pm - Spirit in the glow of the setting sun. The end of another beautiful day in the Hamlet.
Image

742pm - At sundown, both kids were perched together for the night. Spirit on the left, Sky on the right. Both with full crops.
Image

745pm - Juliet had moved to a perch below the nest, but once the sun set, she decided to come back and perch next to her beau, Romeo. Juliet in the foreground. By nightfall, the parents were together on one side of the nest and the kids were together on the other side. :15heartbeat:

Thanks Gigi...it really has been a treasure this year to keep seeing these eaglets this often post fledge. They are starting to spend more of their days away from the nest tree and they are being fed off the nest in the Hamlet, but the whole family continues to regroup in the nest tree every night...even Romeo. Here's some pics from today.

136pm - I could not help but notice how these 5 pine cones were arranged in the nest. Looks like someone place them there....so symmetrical.
Image

219pm - Sky returned to the nest tree alone and periodically called out to her family.
Image

748pm - Everyone came home at days end. Here's Spirit. He was a bit rambunctious, hopping from branch to branch and vocalizing every time a parent moved.
Image

750pm - Juliet in the foreground and Romeo in their favorite sleeping spot. Same as yesterday. Creatures of habit.
Image

750pm - Sky.
Image

805pm - In the end, Spirit just wanted to be with Sky. He made such a sweet chittery sound as he hopped up next to her. They did some beaking and Spirit allopreened Sky briefly before turning attention to his own feathers while Sky closed her eyes to sleep. These two have such a nice bond to each other. :15heartbeat: Just precious. Spirit on the left. Sky on the right.
Image

Sweet dreams everyone!

:bughug: Thanks Bev....the cam operators make it easy. This site has a high definition cam and the AEF cam operators are great at tracking the eagles. They get terrific close-ups and videos. They also have a crew on the ground to make sure everyone is safe and accounted for.

Here is a real sweet video of the kids from yesterday by Lil Sunrise of the American Eagle Foundation. It really shows how these two eaglets have bonded. Spirit is on the right and pesters his older sister, Sky. They do everything together. When she leaves, he follows. So sweet.

As for those silly pinecones, they became quite a play item for the eaglets last week. This video is from last Thursday 3/15, so perhaps Juliet did put the toys away in a symmetrical pattern when she cleaned house...lol. In this video, Sky lands in the nest first, followed by Spirit. He wants to do everything his big sister is does and his name suits him well. He is playful and full of mischief, while she is more subdued. Sky ends up leaving Spirit to play with his pinecone. Video courtesy of Lil Sunrise of the American Eagle Foundation

Enjoy! :flirty:

Storms pushed through, which cleared with very high winds last night. Both Romeo and Juliet decided to sleep someplace protected from the wind, away from the nest tree and the kids went off to find them. Mom & Dad must have told them to go back and hunker down in the nest, because the kids returned home late last night and ended up sleeping side by side, laying low in the nest. Something these two have not done in weeks. These birds are so incredibly smart.

Last night - 933pm - Spirit on the bottom. He has the white band across his tail.
Image

It remains very windy today in the Hamlet and the kids are staying in the nest. Sky was perched on a branch when I opened the cam,....holding on tight, but chose to hunker down in the nest. Spirit was working on some nestovers.

1000am - Both kids staying safe in the nest. Sky on top.

1008am - Spirit in front with some nestovers.

Another nor'easter and another day home from work to check in on this eagle family. They are such a joy to watch. Despite the high winds, the kids did spend some time out and about in the Hamlet. They returned this evening for a dinner delivery of fish. Spirit got it first, but already had a bulging crop and easily gave the catch to his older sister Sky, who polished it off.

720pm - Spirit resting and Sky on the right after finishing her fish dinner.
Image

724pm - Stick play. Spirit had a stick in his beak and Sky (on the right) took it in her beak to join in the fun.
Image

736pm - Sleepy eaglets settling down for the night. Sky on the right.
Image

752pm - Juliet on the left and Romeo on the right. Juliet was watching the kids after they woke up from a brief nap. One of them flew and perched on the branch just above Juliet, which allowed her to grab the eaglets tail feathers in her beak a few times. Juliet loves to allopreen and bond with her family. Romeo vocalized and the eaglet then flew to join its sibling on the other side of the tree. Watching the subtle communication and bonding between these birds never ceases to amaze me. It is very hard not equate feelings and emotions to them. They really are a family.
Image

804pm - At nightfall, Romeo hopped closer to Juliet and Juliet (on the left) flew closer to her Romeo, nibbling at his head feathers. A goodnight kiss? :15heartbeat: With that, both parents took their respective sleeping perches for the night.
Image

809pm - The winds calmed down a lot by evening and the kids decided to sleep perched tonight. Sky on the right and Spirit is in the lower left corner.

:1snowmancarrot: Thanks SGB...the cam operators really make it easy. They have a great crew at AEF.

This weekend the kids are 15 wks old and have been flying for a month. Sky and Spirit are venturing further out and for longer periods of time, but they still return to the nest tree at night as a whole family. Twice this week, Juliet had no takers for a fish lunch in the nest. She had to fly out with the fish and circle around to bring the kids home to eat. Both Sky and Spirit are clearly more aggressive when it comes to food and twice I have seen them snap at Juliet when she tried to sneak their food away to feed them. They will need that assertiveness when they get out on their own. AEF states that at 5-6 wks post fledge, the eaglets leave. That is just around the corner, but I believe these two will be ready. It will be sad to see them go. They have been such a pleasure to watch.
:flirty:

649pm - When I looked in this evening, Spirit had finished a fish dinner and was perched while Sky was in the nest looking for something to eat. Her brother did not share and left nothing for her. Juliet assessed the situation and shortly after I took this pic, she took flight with Sky following right on her heels...time for a hunting lesson.
Image

709pm - Spirit alone in the nest tree, occasionally calling out.
Image

731pm - Romeo, Juliet, and Sky all returned together with a fish. Juliet made sure that this meal went to Sky. She even stayed in the nest with Sky for a bit to make sure. Once Spirit gave up the idea of getting any fish, Juliet perched to let Sky eat in the nest alone and in peace. This pic is of a very watchful Juliet. She occasionally looked back at Sky to make sure she was not being pestered by her little brother.
Image

737pm - Sky enjoying her fish dinner.
Image

743pm - Romeo keeping an eye on the kids too.
Image

746pm - Once Sky finished and perched on a branch, both Juliet and Spirit dropped into the nest to clean up any leftovers. Here's the whole family with Juliet and Spirit in the nest.
Image

751pm - After dinner, Romeo and Juliet were in the mood for love. This pic is the kids response to a canoodle. Get a load of the expressions on their faces....as if wondering what has gotten into Mom & Dad...lol. :teehee: Sky on the left. .
Image

754pm - The aftermath of reaffirming their bond. :15heartbeat: Juliet on the left and Romeo behind her. They remained perched like this to sleep.

The kids came home to the nest tree later than usual tonight. No fish lunch or dinner served at the nest. Mom and Dad must be feeding the kids out in the Hamlet. We will probably start seeing less and less of them as the days go on.

745pm - Sky and Spirit came home together later than usual tonight. Spirit on the left.
Image

800pm - Sky in the nest. Juliet joined the kids in the nest tree and is perched top left. Spirit is on the left edge of the photo. The past two night the kids have not been sleeping side by side. Romeo is not with the family tonight, but probably close by.

This evening and for the first time, Romeo and Juliet left the kids in the nest tree to sleep by themselves. This is the first night without a parent. Home alone and another step closer to becoming independent eaglets. This gradual progression to independence and how the parents get the eaglets there has been such a marvel to witness this year. Rest assured, Mom & Dad are not far away in another tree. :15heartbeat:

The kids are still home. They sleep in the nest tree every night, returning from their day-time adventures in the Hamlet around sunset. Tonight, both Romeo and Juliet are accompanying the kids in the nest tree.

604pm - Spirit
Image

716pm - Juliet arrived home to very noisy kids. She just ignores the squeeeeeing.
Image

723pm - Sky on the left, Spirit on the right.

8pm - In typical Romeo fashion, he arrived at the nest tree last. Here's Dad (top) and Mom together. :15heartbeat:
