Grand Rapids, Michigan Kent County Courthouse: :tissue:
6/13/18: RIP 29/K
The hazards facing young falcons are many, especially in urban areas. Monday night, 29/K, one of the female fledglings from the courthouse nest was hit by a car. She was taken to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center for emergency surgery, but they were not able to save her. I don’t know any details about when and where she was hit, but at least we know why I couldn’t find her that evening.

Flying into windows and being hit by cars are two of the most common causes of death for urban peregrines. The experts estimate that only 50% of peregrines survive to see their first birthday.

As far as I know, the other three fledglings are okay as of this morning. The GVSU females may make the occasional visit to the nest box, but don’t need to return there to get fed. We’ll do our best to keep track of them, but they will start venturing further and further away from the nest location.

:loveheart2: Oh man, SGB - I don’t see him down there today...Did he fledge? His two siblings are currently on the lip of the box yelling for some food. They look so beautiful and healthy!

No sign of 02/C and his sibs are very hungry!!

tiny morsel they found in the box

There was no food drop last night, though Mom did visit. One of the kids was still screaming at 11 pm!!

After recording them for a day, I'm thinking 02/C fell from the box rather than an actual fledge. Hope he's ok.

Someone posted on Facebook that he was rescued and put back up there. :egg8:

Copper County - One is missing in action this morning ... anyone witness a fledge? Link: http://pasty.com/nestbox.html
UPDATE: The fledged male was recovered from the roadway and put back on the pedestrian walk. He was not injured.

The Copper County Houghton-Hancock Lift Bridge has had some drama today. The first fledge 02/C was found dead in the roadway this morning. Then 03/C fledged or fell from the nest box today, 7-5-18, and was found on the bridge near the operator's shack on the South Tower, apparently doing okay. Some people seem to think he is really a "she" as he was almost identical in size to 22/Z who is still in the nest box as of tonight.

Here is the post on the Google Blog: "I got good news and bad news.

Bad news - Steve, the bridge worker who helped me get the male back up onto the porch yesterday - left me a note this PM and said he found that bird dead in the road this AM. I'm assuming since he saw the male from three feet away yesterday, that he is certain of his ID. BUT, I haven't had a chance to grill him to be absolutely sure - did he see the black and blue bands, etc?

So, on to the bird that Dave saw fall out of the box this PM.

Phil Quenzi, my wife Lynn and I spent some time at the bridge in late afternoon and in the end I saw and photographed an immature near the operator's shack on the S tower. Its visible from both boat launch on the SW side and the Ramada lot on the NW side. I could see a "0" in the black band so it has to be either the male or the 2nd female. I also see that the bird still in the box is 22/Z - the BIG female. She sure looks like she'll fledge by tomorrow. So I've attached a photo of the bird we found.

probably more drama tomorrow,
Youngman"
