All going well here. So much more feathered out in just one week.

217 pm - The kids...the one on the bottom is larger with a bigger head and brow ridge - maybe a female.
Image

835 pm - The larger eaglet was perching on the rails this evening. I think the other eaglet on the right is a male with a small round head.

I finally got to see the entire family together. One of the parents brought in a huge fish and was out of out of breath after hauling it to the nest. Both eaglets got stuffed on this feed before bedtime.

737pm - The family and the fish.
Image

745pm - Mom feeding the troops. Younger and smaller eaglet on the right, maybe a male.
Image

753pm - Mom tidied up the nest afterward while the kids rested with full tummies.

Thank you SGB! Here are some pics from last weekend that I didn't get to post. - Sunday June 24th.

417pm - The younger eaglet with wings open to keep cool. I didn't see much food delivered this day and the younger eaglet was repeatedly calling out. Hungry or wanting some attention from a nearby parent?
Image

420 pm - The sibs...younger eaglet on the left.
Image

421 pm - Parent keeping watch.

:loveheart2: Here are pics from today. The eaglets have names! The older eaglet is Victory and the younger eaglet is Valor. Victory tends to be more assertive and aggressive while Valor is more submissive, but very vocal....often calling out when Mom or Dad are in sight. Victory has branched. Valor has not.

1136 am - Both eaglets are self-feeding, but they were having trouble breaking up a catfish head. Both had a go at it, but eventually gave up.
Image

1138 am - It was hot and the kids were following the shade in the nest.
Image

1210 pm - Valor
Image

1216 pm - Victory
Image

1221 pm - Valor (left) and Victory. Valor was calling out....as usual.
Image

118 pm - Food drop-off by a parent. Valor on top has a wing draped over Victory's back. Victory is more aggressive and got the fish, eating most of the tail. Valor eventually snatched it away and was left with the head of yet another catfish, which both kids had trouble with.
Image

235 pm - Another food delivery and this time, the parent did the feed. I don't know this nest well enough to identify this as Mom or Dad, but the parent clearly knew how to unzip this fish, starting with the tough head. The parent made it look easy. Practice makes perfect. Each eaglet got its fair share of food.

A pic from Friday evening, July 6th. Lots of wingercising going on. Victory, the older eaglet loves to perch on the lateral branch while Valor tends to stay on the rails.

7:52pm - Victory on the right showing off those big wings.

Pics from yesterday, Sat July 7th. Victory has been hop flapping from the nest to the lateral branch and back again. I got to see this eaglet do some helicoptering over the nest. Valor is the younger eaglet and is getting in his/her share of wing flaps. Valor remains very vocal....often calling out repeatedly, especially if a parent is visible.

729pm - Valor on the left calling out...as usual. A very vocal youngster.
Image

742pm - Victory on the left settling in for the evening. Valor still being noisy.
Image

813pm - Both eaglets settling down for the night. Valor still awake on the bottom and hoping for a bedtime snack.
Image

815pm - Parent in the nest tree keeping watch for the evening...ignoring Valor's calls.

Today's pic. Victory is 69 days old today and Valor is 66 days old.

250pm - It's hard to make out the eaglets due to the shade of the tree, which has been a blessing during the DC heat. This year, egg laying started late for this family, so temps have been hot at the nest. There was a reprieve from the summer heat this weekend with some cooler, dryer air. Victory is perched on the lateral branch on the right...a favorite perch for this eaglet. Valor is on the rails on the left.

:redface Victory had an accidental fledge today at 73 days of age. She slipped turning around on her favorite perch, the lateral branch. Arboretum staff say she was seem on the ground, but then flew toward the nest. She is probably somewhere in the tree. I love how siblings react :egg16: when a nest mate fledges and Valor did not disappoint us. :teehee: Video courtesy of the American Eagle Foundation.

:penguin: Woo hoo....Victory made it back to the nest yesterday evening, around 6:30 pm. She has resumed her position on her favorite perch - the lateral branch.

1214pm - Parent feeding Valor with Victory (right) on the lateral branch.
Image

1216 pm - View from the other camera. Victory on the far left side of the pic perched on the lateral branch. Valor was very vocal for the short time I watched. Once Valor had a full crop, the parent self-fed while Valor vocalized a continuous stream of chittery sounds. On occasion, Victory would let out a squeeeee, but Valor was the most vocal and always has a lot to say. This eaglet was giving the parent an earful.
Image

1230 pm - Victory (left) came off her perch and joined everyone in the nest.

How Valor (The Eaglet) Was Lost, Then Found In Northeast D.C. :hahah
Article & video here:

I straight up just had to call animal control because there's an injured eagle in the middle of the damn hood. Ps those are some big ass birds.
Update: picture by Brittany. This is a baby bald eagle, a fledgling, and he couldn't fly because he had left the nest too soon. Animal Control picked him up and he's with City Wildlife for rehab.
WE MIGHT GON' BE ON THE NEWS YA'LL

Kittenface, Valor is actually not doing well. The eaglet was transferred to another facility with a large flight cage, but is apparently very underweight and anemic. He/she has no broken bones, ingested fish hooks, or lead poisoning, but something is not right with this youngster. Valor had fledged, possibly accidentally in the middle of the night on 7/26 and was not seen again until the rescue on 7/31. This eaglet was behind the older sibling developmentally while in the nest. Praying for the best.

this is so sad

Washington DC Eagle Cam Watchers is feeling heartbroken.

Dear chatters: Here is the latest and last update on our precious Valor:
This is directly quoted from The Tri-State Bird Rescue Facebook page:
It is with heavy hearts that we share this update. The lack of improvement in Valor’s neurologic symptoms after a week of aggressive supportive care led us to the decision to humanely end Valor’s suffering before his condition deteriorated further. We learned yesterday afternoon that Valor had tested positive for West Nile virus; we had suspected that this was the cause of his symptoms. Infection with this virus is not always fatal in birds; however, after seven days of intensive supportive care, Valor remained slow to respond to stimuli and displayed no signs of improvement. He had to be force-fed as he showed no appetite and refused to hand-feed or self-feed. Valor was extremely lethargic and had head and body tremors—signs of advancing West Nile disease. Our professional assessment was that it was extremely unlikely that he would recover, even for placement at an educational facility. Subjecting him to further treatment, handling, and captivity and prolonging his suffering would have been inhumane and contrary to our principles as wildlife rehabilitators. A necropsy will be performed at another facility.

In the past five years, we’ve treated 300 Bald Eagles along with over 10,000 other wild birds that have relied on us for care. As professionals, we do our very best for each and every single patient, as we always have and will continue to do, and this includes Valor. We share the deep sorrow you feel for his loss and hope you know that your passion for native wildlife matters. It is so inspiring to see the community rally behind a wild animal in need; thank you to everyone who showed support for Valor and Tri-State. While this outcome was not what we wanted, there are thousands of success stories of animals receiving a second chance at life in the wild at our center and wildlife rehabilitation centers around the world—this is what motivates our staff and volunteers to continue caring for wildlife in need every day. To understand more about West Nile Virus please go to: https://www.raptor.umn.edu/our-research/west-nile

Thank you all again for your support. Thank you for your understanding that we do not have the resources to reply to individual questions or phone calls about this case.

West Nile
Q: What is the West Nile virus?A: The West Nile virus belongs to a group of viruses known to cause encephalitis, a potentially fatal inflammation of the brain and spinal cord. The West Nile virus is known to affect horses, birds and humans. It has also been confirmed in sheep, goats, dogs, and squir...

:sorrow: Thanks Bev. I just saw this sad news on their website today. What a shame. Monday's report from Tristate was not good and I planned to wait a few days before checking again. Valor had such sweet personality. A very vocal eaglet. This is so sad.

West Nile is well know to me. It is quite prevalent where I live in NY. Mosquito pools are routinely tested for the virus. It causes illness and/or death in people every year. Wash DC had a tremendous amount of rainfall this spring and summer. No doubt there are a lot of mosquitos. I follow the Medina Raptor Center in Ohio and they usually have to euthanize infected birds. Once infected, their chance of survival is poor. I just checked the geographic distribution of West Nile and it has extended into Canada - primarily the southern border of Manitoba. I am very much against spraying pesticides to control this virus, which they have done in the past in my county. We would get advance notice to close windows and stay indoors while they flew helicopters over our homes and sprayed Scourge. Yikes! They have not done this the last 2 yrs. I think they recognize the dangers in blanketing neighborhoods in pesticide. It's a shot gun approach. Doing so will never eradicate the virus. Removing stagnant water and increasing the bat and fish population are better options to control the insects that harbor the virus.

Thank you for posting. Fly forever free Valor. :tissue:
