21 Dec update: Well, what a crazy 12 hoirs ir has been here!

Last night, just as the owls left the balcony, we went to work on balcony. Mission....Save-The-Post-Plant-Nest-Tree. You will have noticed the huge cracks in the pot plant and the tree looking very brown, despite all the rain we've been having.
The bush in the pot plant on the far side had also taken a hammering, so we decided to move the third pot plant (out of cam sight) to the far balcony pillar, and put the nest tree into the better container. The small bush was taken downstairs and planted in the garden.

Simple. Until you factor in one very irate Lady who did her best to divebomb and hit us as we worked. One little glance away from her and she almost made contact.

Eventually we finished. And we waited. And waited. No owls came to the balcony. We went to sleep..not an owl in sight.

This morning, there they were..back on the balcony, checking out the new arrangements. I wanted to take a photo Lady and the two stinkers and dropped my phone onto the balcony floor. Without thinking..this is my phone...I went out onto the balcony...two owlets mantling and snapping at me and Lady ready to attack if need be.

So those watching the cam will have a great video to watch.

For those not watching our You Tube channel, why not? Just kidding. Here are some pics...

19/01 Owlet gets an examination

One of the owlets was looking very lethargic.

We caught it and our wildlife rehab friend, Murray, came round to examine it.

I found a movie on the net about adopting small penguins. from October 30, 2018.

Worth to see :flirty:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kng8rgkoti0

author : Pot Plant Owl

A collaboration between the Owl Rescue Centre
and Pot Plant Owl saw the female adopting two orphaned owl chicks.
For the second consecutive year, the female is sitting on infertile eggs.
Eggs should hatch around 30 days, so if after 6 weeks they have not hatched, they are infertile.
Owl Rescue Centre rescue chicks from urban areas, where parents have been killed.
They must raise these chicks by hand.
Pot Plant Owl offered to adopt these chicks,
thereby assisting Owl Rescue and also giving the owls a family of their own.

SECOND UPDATE 3 JANUARY:

The vet confirmed the early stages of Trich (Trichomonas) in our chick. Terrible news but it is treatable. We are now tasked with locating and catching the rest of the owl family to test them too.

As luck would have it, our second intrepid explorer came back to the balcony early this morning and sat on the balcony awning.

Murray came round and together with our neighbour, Craig, helped us catch second chick in a net.

The second chick was also badly dehydrated so after getting some fluids in it, it too is on its way to the vet for treatment.

That is the good news.

The not-so-good news is that the parents were nowhere in sight as we caught the chick. No dive bombing or alarm calls. We don't know what this means at this stage.

For now, our two owlets will be treated and should recover. We have to keep watching out for the parents to see if they are around.

ANYONE IN THE RADIOKOP AREA, JOHANNESBURG: Please be on the lookout for any owls closer to the ground, especially owls who are not moving much. Contact us immediately..don't wait for even an hour to see if the owl moves.

Thank you.

Update on owl parents:

At 7:30pm, just as we were ready to go inside make food, we heard Pappa hooting.

A good, vocal hoot from Pappa, followed by a long flight past us to the neighbour's rooftop.

No sign of yet but that's okay. We are still hopeful that we will see her soon.

Here's Pappa...

Tracy and I are absolutely gutted. We thought we had got the chicks to the vet on time. Sadly the first one we took passed away yesterday. The second chick is still fighting for its life.

But, I am making this post about the terrible disease that is killing off the urban owls in Johannesburg. I have spoken to 4 of Johannesburg's owl rehabilitation centres and, amongst Spotted Eagle Owls, the disease is horrific.

To bird enthusiasts, the Trichomonas disease condition is also known by such names as "trich" (said like 'try-k') or "Canker"

Trichomonas is a protozoan organism that is commonly found in the mouth, throat, gastro-intestinal tract and upper respiratory tract of pigeons, doves, chickens, canaries, raptors and a variety of (parrot) species including budgerigars, cockatiels and Amazon parrots. Both domestic and wild bird species can be affected.

Transmission of the parasite from one bird to another occurs in one of three ways:
1. Infected parent feeding young
2. Contaminated drinking water
3. Infected bird is a prey meal for another bird (raptors most commonly)

In Johannesburg, people are proud of their gardens and love the garden birds that they attract. Including doves, pigeons, sparrows, weavers etc. Most people (like ourselves) put out feeding trays for the birds and have bird baths. It is these bird baths that are responsible for transmitting the disease.

We are aware of this, so to clean the bath of Tryk we empty it out every few days and leave it to bake in the sun for a day.

So, this is an appeal to everyone with a Bird Bath, please empty it out frequently and let it dry in the sun before refilling it.

Regards
Allan

Tragically, this in one of the last videos of the 'Adopted' chicks. Taken on 30 Dec.
They are feeding on a Laughing Dove that has been brought to them by Lady, the female.
The dove was infected with a deadly disease.
One of the chicks succumbed on 3 Jan,
the other is currently fighting for its life at a specialist Avian Vet. Lady has not been seen for 5 days

unfortunately this disease is killing
falcons also

you have to use a new treatment that our biologist gets from out of Canada. very expensive but very effective.

adults are not as prone to dying of disease but can carry it for years. so I would guess they need to be treated.

Update on our chick:

The disease is progressing but the chick is fighting it hard. Daria is doing everything she can to save it. Our chick is being fed artificially because it has stopped eating.

Daria is taking the chick home today to look after over the weekend.

We will see it again on Monday. We're not giving up on this chick...Still no sign of Lady.

Latest update 6 Jan:

Our second chick has died. :tissue: :sorrow: :tissue:

We spoke to Brendan from the Owl Rescue Centre. He's been very busy recently with Spotted Eagle Owl rescues in the Radiokop / Honeydew area because of trich.

Brendan spoke at length with Daria about the two chicks. Apparently the vets are struggling against what appears to be a new strain / strength of trich that is not responding to usual treatments.

Owls in our area - Radiokop and Honeydew - are dying at an alarming rate recently despite receiving treatment at an early stage.

Upon closer inspection of the owl in the palm tree by our gate, I believe now that the owl is Pappa and not Lady. If Pappa, he has a 90% chance of having trich (his right eye is completely shut) which means that if he dies, the Pot Plant Owl legacy and family die too.

Despite being beyond devastated and battling to see through tears, we are trying now to get the owl caught ASAP to be treated ASAP.

If we fail, the PPO family will be no longer.

The local community newspaper published an article calling for residents to be on the lookout for Pappa.
We received a photo of him on a roof in the neighbouring complex.
He is still flying strongly but has not returned to our area.

Unfortunately we also received confirmation that Lady has died. Her body has been found.

:sorrow:

Regards from Allan.

Pappa hasn't been seen in the last couple of days.
This is not uncommon out of breeding season for Pappa not to be around.
Based on how well he has been flying,
we remain hopeful that he is okay and can fight off any secondary infection. :15heartbeat:

Thank you to everyone for your concern and comments.
This tragedy has given Tracy and I a different owl focus.
I will be spreading the word about Trich in South Africa to help eradicate it.
Tracy is a writer and has had many PPO stories flying around in her head for years.
She is now going to put them down on paper so watch this space.

18 Jan update: Here's a recent picture of Pappa.
Brendan from Owl Rescue Centre isn't convinced that he has Trich.
His right eye needs attention
but he's looking okay..especially for his age that we estimate at 16 years old.

Thank you for your kind donations.
We return on Sunday so on Monday we will forward all payments to owl / wildlife 'Angels'.
