Big Bear Eaglets have names - article and photo from FB:

Image

"COOKIE and SIMBA would like to personally thank everyone who honored them by submitting a suggested name for them. And they would especially like to thank the Big Bear Valley 3rd grade classes that chose their winning names and the CONTEST WINNERS who submitted them...

"Cookie" -- This was a group effort from the three kindergarten classes at Heritage Computer Science Academy, part of the Garden Grove Unified School District, located in Santa Ana, California. Their whole school has been watching daily since the eggs were laid. The name was submitted for the group by Susan Hansen. She says, "We have all learned so much from watching nature at its finest - can’t wait to see what they do next."

"Simba" -- 9-year-old Samuel Brown, a 3rd grader at Valle Vista Elementary School in Rancho Cucamonga came up with this name and his grandfather submitted it for him. Samuel loves Big Bear. He enjoys science and nature and has been following the birth of the eagles with his grandfather since Stormy (2017-2018 nesting season). His class was watching the eagles being born and was very excited when his suggested eagle name was selected.

Cookie and Simba and their mom (Jackie) and dad (Shadow) are also very pleased that so many classrooms around the country and in other countries have been watching and learning about their lives. The 4-foot eagle nest in the photo below was built by children from Hoover State Pre-School. They collected sticks on a nature walk and brought more from home to create the nest."

:buzzybee: Results of banding at West End on 5/4/19:

The leg the orange band is placed determines sex and silver federal ID bands were placed on the opposing leg.
They are no longer using bloodwork to determine sex.

We banded two male chicks today at the Fry's Harbor bald eagle nest on Santa Cruz Island. They were banded 36/A and 48/A. Tomorrow we should start with our first peregrine bandings.

One of the FP eaglets fell after branching this morning. He's trying to get back to the nest, but it partially collapsed at egg laying time and the parents tried to re-inforce at that time. Dr. Sharpe added a branch or two at banding, but it has slowly been falling since it partially collapsed. He can be seen easily on cam now as he has been trying to get back. He keeps going sideways, but needs to fly up. Below is a short video of event followed by slo-mo per Janntonne:

I have to wonder what he/she was thinking on the way down. Was it "OOPS! or "This feels pretty good! I might have to try this again!"

Per chat, FP's 1st hatched Robert Alan (55/A) fledged this morning after being forced off twice by his brother on a branch. The 2nd time he was forced off he was in brush and after some time and flapping, he flew out of sight and has not returned to the nest at this time.

:buzzybee: Big Bear eaglets are both male!!

PearlBailey Mod • 4 minutes ago
The BB cam was down today because the eaglets were banded. FOBBV decided to turn the cam off during the process. The eaglets are both males. Jim Campbell-Spickler made the nest entry, working with Dr. Peter Bloom and USFS today. Jim reports it all went perfectly!

Silver Fed band on right and purple on left. Capture by Cali Condor:

Edit to add: Here's a photo taken by Jim (the professional tree climber and researcher) of Simba and Cookie:

Here's a shortened video by IWS of retrieval and return of the eaglets at Big Bear for banding. Jim did take them to the ground for banding. Simba (1st hatch) left leg purple ZR1 with silver fed on right. Cookie (2nd hatch) left leg purple ZJ1 with silver fed on right. Dr. Sharpe did this video, but he is not responsible for Big Bear as they are under Dr. Bloom for the San Benardino Mountains, while Dr. Sharpe has the Channel Islands Project and he is using orange bands placed on right or left according to the sex of the eaglet. I do not know if Dr. Bloom places colored bands per the sex of the eaglet.

Here's a short video of the owl attacks at FP tonight at 8:33 and 8:34 with the 3 eaglets and Mom I think present. All are safe, but it's going to be a long night. One of the eaglets was Robert Alan who made it back to the nest this eve flying in great fashion per reports! Video is by knarley123:

:sorrow: We've lost Cookie this morning at Big Bear! They are thinking it is weather related as they had rain, then snow again here. They said he seemed weak yesterday. They hatched much later this season, but it seems we have the same scenario as last year, if indeed it was the weather. I think it was only supposed to be 28F last night I remember reading from someone on chat yesterday.

Mrs. BB and Shadow have started moving Cookie's remains to the edge of the nest.

Simba branched this morning! Not sure if he wanted to or had to as the whole floor of the nest is pretty much sticks now. :teehee:
