:taz: Steve attacked by bald eagle just after 6:45 EDT!! It was very upsetting to see this. He was able to fly afterwards and I hope we will see him in the morning without any serious injuries. I am even wondering if Steve was giving chase in the end? Short video of event is by Arlene Beech:

Encouraging commentary by Poppy:

Ospreys and eagles have their altercations all the time, especially since eagles, as opportunistic hunters, go for the fish that was caught by ospreys. Dr. B. witnessed such an incident over HI a year or two ago.
Watching the clip, again, this is my take on the incident: Keep in mind, that we heard eagles around these days, even had a visitor on the BH nest, earlier today. Steve returned with a fish, but hesitated to deliver it directly to Rachel. He most probably was aware of the eagle, nearby. When he finally was ready to settle on the eggs, the eagle approached the nest and Steve tried to fend it off.

During their fish fights, eagles and ospreys often got entangled with their talons, getting finally free. Steve looked fine when he followed the eagle to the right side. He will show up eventually, to give Rachel a final break tonight, or tomorrow, with some breakfish ;-)

Still not seen. An update from Poppy from an hour or so ago:

First things first: We are still waiting for Steve's return. He, most probably, spent the night in his favorite roosting tree, nearby. On bad weather days he is always late on the nest, very often first seen in the afternoon. So stay positive: trust Nature, trust Osprey!

Well, yesterday, Bald eagles were dominating the action around Hog Island. At first, a juvenile visited the BH nest, leaving it in a mess.

Later, in the evening, Steve returned with a fish, but hesitated to deliver it directly to Rachel. He most probably was aware of the eagle, nearby. Keep in mind, that we heard eagles around all these days. When Steve finally was ready to settle on the eggs, the eagle approached the nest from below. Steve tried to fend it off. Both got entangled with each other and flew off the nest. After being separated, Steve flew smoothly off to the right, following the eagle, indicating that he is OK. Such fights are not unusual. They happen all the time, since eagles are opportunistic hunters, going after the prey ospreys and other raptors catch.

:7val: A pip since sometime after MN for egg #2! It is progressing and occasionally you can see it moving and hear it through the opening during closeups.

Actually it is more than progressing as the side with the most work done by the chick was face down ... the chick has progressed and is in the act of hatching now!!

:teehee: Steve attempted to feed the chicks this afternoon. Only problem, he just couldn't seem to get close enough. The little one finally gets 2-3 bites over a third of the way in on the video and the oldest one finally wakes up and because it is closer to Steve, it does manage to get a few bites. Then, you see the nest shake and that is Rachel arriving to to put an end to the "food follies" after she cleans the nest of all the missed opportunities! Video from this afternoon by Regina Hornung:

It's at the end of the 2nd feed of the morning and the whole family is here. Steve tried to do a dual feed earlier, but as there were no takers, he ate that piece himself. Close-ups of the remaining egg do not show any pips from this view. It is a few days past what the eggs here normally hatch and is looking as if this egg is not viable, although not completely out of the hatch range, it is doubtful. Probably just two chicks for Rachel and Steve this season.

The Mod here is reporting they believe chick #2 hatched from the 3rd egg. The chicks just finished a feed by Rachel.

Feeding just finished by Rachel and both got bites. While there is bonking here, I did not see any during this part of the feed that I witnessed. Size and coloration between the two chicks remains very noticeable.

Here's a capture of the whole family from today by CraftyFeb10:

It also shows the size and color difference between the chicks for now.

They have been waiting out the rains here for a couple days or so. Rachel currently is protecting the chicks heads from the rain.

:egg14: Upset on the nest at 0400. You have to wonder if it was an owl, although the offender was never seen. Video of "What spooked Rachel? Hog Island Ospreys. 04.00 / 02 July 2019" by Arlene Beech:
