All of the sudden, there was a flurry of feathers fluttering & now one is on the ledge - at the right of the picture.
She has been walking back and forth in front of the perch. Should be safe there. :loveheart2:

OBTW, Laura and I think RK is really a female.

All three have left the nest box and we have had at least one fledge and one rescue. Rescued bird was M/54 or Dune. Reported to bird rehab who called me. Laura was downtown already and we arranged for Dawn [works in Market Tower} to bring a box and pick her up. She was released back to the 31st floor.

Our patrol group has gotten older and many of the former members have moved on or are just not interested. We are doing the best we can, but coverage is spotty. It is what it is. I hope to go down later today after the HVAC guys are finished with my new furnace/AC installation and ATT comes to install some equipment. I hope the birds stay safe!

Laura's full report and Dune before her trip back upstairs.

"Magical adventures for the MT falcons are starting! They never fail to keep us on our toes.

I arrived downtown around 8 and had 2 juvies on MT in sight - mostly behind the stanchions on 31. Saw an adult carry food over the Monument and plucking and another adult (probably Jeffery) come in to the Monument also - heard him chupping to Willow while she continued to pluck and ignore him. Meanwhile I suddenly see a juvie on Sheraton roof that must have come off the NE corner of 31 where I had observed one but many things happened around that time so I was losing track of what was going on.

Get a call from Gigi that the Hattons were called about a bird down at Ohio and Meridian. I walk that way, don't see a crowd of people but see a woman washing the terrace at my old job place - 220 N Meridian. I asked her had she seen a bird and by gosh she had and reported it but she saw it fly north on Meridian so I walk north on Meridian. I come to the corner of Meridian and New York and I see the bird on the sidewalk in front of the Baker Daniels building and she and I have a stare down. I call for help as I have no box - Gigi calls Dawn Terry and I call JoAnne Cummings to see if they can help. Dawn gets there first with a box and CHANNELING RICHARD KINNETT - she covers M/54 (Dune) with a rescue coat while I hold the box and we get her in there. Dawn was and is awesome!

Back at MT, we are escorted up to 31 and she is out the hatch and scuttles out of the box so quickly and in the gutter I can't grab a pic. I'm pretty sure she was okay - she didn't even holler goodbye. We could hear the adult "greet" her as she exited the box and "yelling" at the intruders.

Getting home, I had a text from Dawn Terry with a pic of Amy M/53 on the 25th floor ledge. Don't know how or when that happened and I really don't know if all 3 have been sighted as of this morning. But at least 2 have.

Huge thanks to Market Tower folks for helping us out so quickly and to Dawn for her extraordinary effort. What a way to start your vacation Dawn. What a morning!

Dune was spotted again by Dawn while working at her desk on the 25th floor of Market Tower. Apparently she "dropped down" after her return to the 31st floor.
Oh, that girl is going to be trouble! :teehee:

Oh, where do I begin? How about last night.

I went downtown on a beautiful Friday evening. Found meter parking right away and paid enough for about 3 hours. With binoculars and camera in hand, I headed up to the top level of the Penn St. Parking garage to take advantage of the good views of several rooftops, the Circle, and more.

Immediately I found a juvie, later IDed as Amy, M/53, and an adult across the street on the Centier Bank Building. She soon began squawking and I saw Willow take off headed west flying around the nearby Barnes Thornburg building. She came back and appeared to drop food off to Amy. I then headed to another parking garage near the BT bulding and found another juvie and an adult, presumably Willow. Juvie took off and flew near Centier then circled around landing back on BT after some nice flying and soaring and a good landing. After a bit of crying, the second juvie flew and landed at Centier.

With both kiddos on the same building, I thought things were settling down, but Willow became agitated and started kakking and flying. Jeffrey joined her and then I saw the drone. I am not sure how high it got, but the parents did not like it and only settled down when it stopped flying.

I will post pics below after I get to today's report. I picked up Sue and we headed back down to the Penn St. garage. I normally park at meters but we decided since it was raining it would be nice to have a car to get out of the rain.

So far so good. We only found 1 falcon huddled against Centier close to where we left Any the night before. Took a couple of pictures and then decided we were looking at an adult! Not a youngster at all. We moved the car several times before we finally decided to leave.

Now it gets crazy! The parking garage was fairly empty and as we traveled down from the top we encountered 2 police officers. I slowed down and lowered my window to tell them what we were up to. It was then that they asked us to leave because we were in the middle of a crime scene and they did not want us contaminating evidence. WHAT????

We heard no sirens and were very surprised to find the street and sidewalk cordoned off with crime tape. YIKES! Then Sue exclaimed, "There's a body over there!" And, yes, there was. On a stretcher completely covered and being loaded into a vehicle. Maybe the coroner. Don't know. And then as soon as the body was in the vehicle, an officer began removing the tape and said we were allowed to leave.

I have not seen anything on the news so I wonder if this was an OD, suicide, and not a crime. Very strange. Regardless of the circumstances, this was someone's child, parent, sibling, cousin and a life loss is probably being grieved.

There is a silver lining in all of this for Sue and me. We asked the garage management that since we had been asked to leave by law enforcement if they would waive the cost of our parking or give us a pass for next time. And they did. So no $15 parking fee after all. Of course, that does not alleviate the freaked out mentality we were in! I go up in that garage all the time. The worst I have encountered was vomit and I will take vomit any day over someone losing their life.

So here are some pics from last night.

2 juvies and 2 adults. I guessed at who was Willow and who was Jeffrey. Sorry about the words text. My application quit and I didn't get them removed before removing that.

Well, at least 2 of the juvies like the Centier building. My 2 day report:
As I was headed to Cincinnati for Fathers Day, I received a message that we again had a bird down. Laura and Susan N retrieved Dune once again and put her back on MT 31. sorry for the crazy sizes. I thought I had reduced them all to no more than 7 inches, then I got a message to change them to pixels. Ugh!

Dune on the ground, on the perch, then cruising the ledge. She was seen on cam flyng north but we could not find and ID her.

The 4 we found on Centier Bank Building. Have no ID for the juvies.

glad you are there. hope you find #3. I know how i t is with people loosing interest and so getting older. I am afraid Peter and I are the ones getting older. we do what we can. parking kills us so we try and get a month pass ends up cheaper in long run.

thanks again for posting reports and pictures :7val:

The parking pass is an interesting idea, Bev. I will look into that next year. Many of our group want to stay on the email list, but that is about all. So disappointing but not entirely surprising.

I have also taken on a community volunteer position with a group that monitors property zoning requests in my area. Good cause, but I have lots to learn. I have a pile of papers on my kitchen table to review... I am tired!

Dune is at Rehab.

Yesterday while at bird rehab we received a call from our avian vet that Animal Care and Control brought a banded bird in. Dune was picked up the evening before on the ground just across the street from the Centier Bank Bldg where we have seen 4 peregrines.

The next morning ACC transported her to the vet. Radiographs do not show fractures but they noted that they felt a knot in her shoulder area which might be consistent with a coracoid (collar bone) fracture which sometimes do not show up on xrays.

Here are some pics taken after she arrived at rehab.

ACC intake and vet intake papers.

She sure does! I think she will be heading to a falconer to learn how to fly and hunt instead of turning her loose downtown again. After the 3rd unsuccessful attempt at flying we want to make sure she can sustain flight and hunt. There are several falconers the DNR is considering and I do not know where she will end up.

that is great gigi. she may just have a bit of muscle tissue damage which will heal with rest. sometimes , the city just gets them and once given a chance to fly away form city, they do well

I know a lot do not agree with our hacking program, but it is same chance that is given to our falcons . it is out at a monitored cliff site.we have been fortunate to have a nesting pair of falcons on cliff at our hack site, that takes them all under their wings, but we have a falconer that lives there , right to end of season and puts out quail and monitors them also. ( we know adult pair cannot feed them all). he takes their band numbers daily, to keep track. this may be last year as funds are tight , if they are not ready to go to hack site, a falconer flies them also . our female out at Genesee , came from hack site. she was unsuccessful at her city site but did well at hacksite, obviously. 2 of our females at nutrien,, were out at hacksite. females have a hard time in the city.

wishing her the best of luck. nic e looking falcon :7val:

An update on Dune from Laura at the Indiana Raptor Center. It sure is a long and slow process. I think you will agree that Laura is a most descriptive and eloquent writer.

"Sweet Dune is just that: sweet, gentle, and patient. Her symptoms continue to be elusive but we are in a good place. Her anti fungal (aspergillosis) treatment concluded about 3 weeks ago, after which we are to bring her in for X-rays and blood tests at the four week mark. That four week mark will be about the 10th of October. Positive results will require further testing.
However, negative results will allow us to move her outside and gradually begin to challenge her endurance. When she can fly for 1500 feet and then her heart and respiratory rates return to normal within 60 seconds then we can begin training her for release. Placement with a Falconer will depend on what her deficit will be- hopefully none, but everybody has a hitch in their git-along somewhere.
Fortunately, the NAFA meet is in late November and so we will have a trunk load of experts to assist in getting her back in the Sky.

Unfortunately, Indiana has very few locations where peregrines may be flown. The natural habitats of large city cliffs do not lend themselves to luring for practice. The agricultural areas are too tightly bound w electrical lines and transformers.
The city peregrines learn their trade above the electrical jungle.
It is likely that Dune will be sent out of state to a plains state for proper training with a balloon luring system and remote release. While it has not been discussed w the InDNR, we are certain that Dune would be welcomed back to Indiana for her release.
It takes a long time to fix a Peregrine. Every one of them is not just an Olympic Athlete, but a Gold Medalist.
Imagine being an orthopedist whose every patient leaves their care prepared to gold medal in 10 events- much like the winner of the decathlon!
These Commanders of the Sky are very complex creatures, from their spectacular eyesight (that we would have great difficulty deciphering such swift image change), to stooping in a spiral to prevent stall, and losing track of prey visually, to steering w covert and epilate feathers that are no larger than a new blade of grass, to pulling 29 G’s when coming out of their stoop without their legs being shattered or their entire body exploding instantly into 1000 pieces.

So that’s where we are. Forgive my use of gender pronoun- it is a hard habit to break as I have been a Falconer for 25 years- and conversationally, all Falconry birds are shes- that being a reference to a fine, dependable ship that is light but strong, swift but powerful.

Laura Edmunds
Indiana Raptor Center

VP, Ed and Clinical Director,
Curator, Band-Aid Manager"

Not sure how it happened but one of the old links to the IndyStar came on line. I am sure they are unaware. I will check in periodically. Unfortunately I can not share. Several of us are working to get cams for the upcoming year. I will keep you posted on that!

Hoping to get a picture of a falcon at night with the lighted monument. Just like old times!

Man about town!
On Christmas day, Bret Fergason a local birding & photography enthusiest found Jeffery 52/E about 7 miles east of Market Tower in the Irvington neighborhood. He decribed the experience as a '"Lifer" Best Christmas present ever'. Bret gave his permission to post his photo and his USGS certificate of appreciation for submitting his sighting. Amy Kearns, DNR biologist confirmed the ID!

Meanwhile back at Market Tower...
Laura captured this image of our residents. :flirty:
We don't see bands on the bird on the perch, so we're assuming Willow with Jeffrey flying in.
