Imagine my surprise when I’m sitting at my desk, answering emails, back to the window, when I hear falcons calling!

Three full-size peregrines were flying around and it looked like it was two adults training a third falcon to fly. One definitely looked dark brown. One was sort of bombing the other - flight training for a juvenile? In any event, all three birds were flying strong.

Here’s a video: https://vimeo.com/344076145/description

So I was hoping that maybe things would change and I would see sweet Durand again.
My message and response below. :girlsad3:

HI,

We haven’t gotten anything official but I’m pretty certain that for now it will probably not be happening.

Will the falcons ever be able to return to their home on the Rhodes Tower? Or is it pretty much never going to happen?

Thanks

Thanks, ljames! Really miss them. Was so happy when they were located and then we had the 1 report on their young on June 3rd and then that was it from the ODNR. I had hoped we would hear from them again and I checked almost daily until recently. Thank goodness we get reports from folks such as ccollins13 and Anowlwithknees. It was a much beloved and exciting nest and the loss of it was a tremendous blow to this forum. I hope Durand and Aries are doing well and all their young remained safe and were able to disperse this season!!

I am completely heartbroken that they will never be able to return to the ledge at Rhodes Tower. As you know, Clara lost her nest in San Jose this year, so that was a big blow for sure, and Harrisburg appears to have people in charge that don't make the best decisions for the chicks, more interested in participating is some tracking program or other. Of course Pa and S2 at De Mortel have been long gone. So many other losses this year that were hard to accept. I am watching Australia CSU, but am apprehensive about that nest. Anyway, we'll see how it goes, but a lot of sadness involved with the falcons, a lot for me anyway.

I started watching Peregrine Falcons (and Bald Eagles) in 2006. Harrisburg, San José, Columbus, Fort Wayne, De Mortel, those were the first nests. Those were the nests that brought us all together, in chats and forums, from all over the world. Since those days we have lost a lot of famous, iconic falcons and thinking back makes me sad.
The new falcons and nests don't seem to have the same appeal to me. First loves and all . . . .

I agree that it is very sad to hear that they do not have plans for the flacons to return to the Rhodes tower. I hope that we can find someone within the ODNR who is receptive to streaming wherever they may be. The legacy of the Columbus Falcons is too great to simply be unceremoniously cast aside. The falcons and this forum have meant so much to me over the years!

I was back in Columbus about 2 weeks ago, but I did not spot the falcons. Anytime I return I always run past their new nests site/downtown/waterfront to see if I can spot them. I'll always be on the lookout and update when I can!
