Sorry folks, we can't seem to get our YouTube stream working so we've made the tough decision to turn the cameras off for the season.

All have fledged & only one returns to the nest box at night.

Great River Energy has closed and will demolish the power plant that hosts the peregrine falcons and our birdcam. Great River Energy is seeking another suitable nesting site on the adjacent property in hopes of continuing to host falcons and the birdcam in the future.

This year’s falcon family is still active and we will not disturb the falcons until they migrate from the site in late October.

If we are unable to locate a safe location to host falcons, we will remove the nesting box and camera after the birds migrate in the fall.

Since 2007, 38 falcons have fledged from the Elk River nesting box. We are so proud of the small part we have played in restoring falcon populations, and we will continue to follow the falcons who have fledged from our nesting box.

Thanks QOS. I hope you will find a suitable nestsite and the falcons will use it. Keep us posted, please! :girlsad3:

Oh no, another "classic" nest site disappears. I hope the falcons will find a good new place to nest once they return from migration next spring. They will be very confused at first no doubt. :girlsad3:

Here's a neat article about the Elk River nest box.

I hate it when humans make a commitment to wildlife, then fail them.

:leafthumbs: Thanks Bob - wherever you are ....

Bob has successfully brought falcons back to the upper midwest. Several nest boxs around Minnesota and Wisconsin. 38 young produced by JUST ONE BOX in addition to the many produced by other boxes.

In 2018 a female falcon named Breezy from the RRP King Plant joined resident male and raised 4 in 201 and 4 more in 2019. Since I also watch the King cam, it was like watching my grandkids! Well, almost!

They are searching for a new home for the Elk River peregrine falcon nesting box.
Since 2007 - 38 falcon chicks have hatched and fledged from the Elk River roost.

FYI:
New site chosen for Elk River peregrine falcons
With decommissioning of the Elk River Energy Recovery Station underway, many are wondering what will happen with the nesting peregrine falcons who have long made the plant their home.

What started as an Eagle Scout project with the Raptor Resource Project in 2006 grew to see 38 young peregrine falcons fledge from the Elk River location. The 24/7 bird cam was watched and enjoyed by people locally, nationally and even world-wide.

“It is a very popular and productive nest site,” said Brenda Geisler, administrative assistant, who has looked after the nesting box since 2007.

Geisler, along with a group of other Great River Energy employees, spent time these last few months weighing various options for how to best handle moving the nesting box location while the falcons are gone for their southern migration.

The group ultimately decided to install the nesting box on a pole located on Great River Energy’s Elk River campus—not far from the plant—which will offer a bit of familiarity for the falcons once they return, as well as the recommended height for the nest and required power available for the birdcam.

“I am grateful that this important project is moving into its next phase and am hopeful that it will continue to evolve beyond the Elk River Station demolition,” Geisler said.

Employees have started the process of removing the existing nesting box and preparation for installation of a new pole in anticipation of the peregrines’ typical nesting period in mid-February.

We will be sure to share more information regarding the birdcam as it becomes available.

Thanks to you all for being such loyal followers!
