:penguin: Panda cams on again @ National Zoo!! When you click on, screen is black for awhile before view comes in. Have seen all 3. I think Bei Bei on cam1, Mei cam2, Tian Tian cam1 @ "howdy doody" door occasionally. But can't be sure, just glad I got to see all three!! :flirty:

From the National Zoo
Mei Xiang Showing Signs of Estrus

"Mar. 21, 2019
Image
pic from Smithsonian's National Zoo
On March 15, Mei Xiang started exhibiting behavioral signs that breeding season is approaching! A urinary hormone analysis confirmed that her change in behavior was due to her rising estrogen levels, signaling that the panda breeding season will be here soon.

Mei Xiang’s behavioral changes have not been especially subtle, she has broken from her energy-efficient routine of eating and sleeping and is instead much more active. She is very eager to play and splash in the pools in her yard and enclosure, and the bubble bath tubs she receives as extra enrichment. She also has been scent-marking around her habitat. Scent-marks are one of the ways giant pandas communicate if they are ready to breed. Adults do not spend time together outside of the breeding season. A scent-mark helps the solitary animals find each other during the 24-to-72-hour window the female is able to conceive a cub. Mei Xiang is not just advertising her rising hormonal levels through her restlessness and scent-marks, she is also vocalizing. She began bleating at keepers, which is something she only does during the breeding season.

Tian Tian has been following all of these changes vigilantly. Over the weekend, he started bleating at Mei Xiang, one of his ways to communicate that he is interested in her. He also has been spending a lot of time at the howdy window that separates their yards. This week he has been bleating more frequently and has tried to keep Mei Xiang within his sight.

Although Tian Tian is very interested in Mei Xiang, she has made it clear with her vocalizations that she is not ready to breed. Keepers are going to continue to monitor the pandas for behavioral changes. Meanwhile, endocrinologists at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute will continue monitoring her hormones to determine when Mei Xiang reaches peak estrus."

NBC Today show is to report on why the pandas at San Diego are leaving at 8:21 CDT. I looked for info at site but, ...

Watch the Zoo's pandas Bai Yun and Xiao Liwu daily!

In honoring the terms of our conservation loan agreement with the People’s Republic of China, 27-year-old Bai Yun and her son, 6-year-old Xiao Liwu, will leave the San Diego Zoo this spring, and will be repatriated to their ancestral homeland. In the meantime, guests can still visit our panda residents at the Zoo and watch them on Panda Cam until April 29, 2019. We are now working with colleagues in China to determine and redefine the future of panda conservation and research. Please join our ongoing Panda Celebration, where guests can show their appreciation for giant pandas in multiple ways. Zoo visitors can purchase a commemorative bell from the Panda Shop or choose a free tag to hang on the Giant Panda Friendship Wall, located across from the Giant Panda Research Station in Panda Canyon. On social media, panda fans are encouraged to share their memories and their hopes for the species using #pandas4ever.

I did not find any REAL answers as to why in piece. Mom at San Diego has been there since 1996, but was supposed to stay only 12 years. I understand there there are pre-arrangements, but why wait so long to enforce? She is 27 years old. She is used to diet and language commands from here. I know they are aware of these problems and hope some type of measures have been taken to ease difficulties. To leave San Diego without any pandas is shocking ... is it money or some other hidden agenda in play ...

It is a shame. The San Diego Zoo is a fantastic facility and the pandas will be missed. China has the right to enforce this, but as you mention, this is a tough one to swallow.

I think the AI was in May. I did not bring it over as it's such a long wait for the results! Do I realize the wait is the same ... I do, but I like to pretend it's not!! So here you go ... the wait will not be as long now as I've shaved off a couple of months for us:

Hate to see little Bei leave but we all knew that would happen. Hope Mei will give birth soon! :15heartbeat:

:1val: No word on Mei's status as yet, but we are into September now. She is currently asleep in her den nest. All of the gals at Atlanta have had recent birthdays:

Hey everyone! A lot has been going on in PandaLand recently, as the giant pandas birthdays are all happening around this time. We recently celebrated Lun Lun’s 22nd birthday! As soon as her birthday was over, it was already time to start planning for the twins’ third birthday — today! We hosted two celebrations during the day today. The Panda Care Team and interns made multiple gift boxes as well as ice “cakes.” The gift boxes and cake contained yummy treats like sweet potato, bananas and sugarcane. Thanks to all who joined us for today’s celebrations or watched from afar on PandaCam!

Bei Bei and Tian Tian both celebrated birthdays in August. Bei Bei turned 4 on the 22nd and his Dad turned 22 on the 27th. We do not get to see videos of Tian Tian as much and I wanted to bring over the separate celebrations of father and son on their birthdays from the videos by the Smithsonian National Zoo:

I had to go to their FB page to get an update on Mei from 4 days ago, but nothing new here.

Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute
September 6 at 3:20 PM ·
Giant panda Mei Xiang is still exhibiting expected, normal behaviors after the secondary hormone rise that are in line with both a pregnancy and pseudo, or false, pregnancy. Pandas, like several other species, can undergo pseudopregnancies, where they do everything they would if they were pregnant.

At the end of a pseudopregnancy, however, hormone levels return to baseline and females’ energy levels and behavior return to normal.

Check out our FAQ on giant panda breeding and estrus. LEARN MORE: https://s.si.edu/2zZxruY.

The Panda House will remain closed to provide Mei Xiang quiet. When Mei Xiang’s hormone levels return to baseline, she will either give birth to a cub or her behavior will return to normal. #PandaStory
