:15heartbeat: Hoping tomorrow goes better for Jackie and Shadow! Under video by Cali Condor from today:

"Adult bald eagle invades the territory and lands on the nest multiple times. Jackie and Shadow take turns chasing it around.
The intruder ends up being kicked off the nest three times.

Bald eagles routinely compete for territories and mating opportunities. They engage in territorial disputes, which may result in displacements.
Egg#1 is 53 days old, Egg#2 is 50 days old. The eggs are not expected to hatch.
Live feed from a bald eagle nest at Big Bear Lake, CA provided by the Friends of Big Bear Valley."

:1val: No intruder so far today! Many are worried because Shadow is holding his right eye shut some this morning and there is what appears to be blood on his head. I do not see any swelling and I have seen him open and shut this eye as normal. Zoom view at 9:12. Plus there is update on their FB page. Also, some saw one of the eggs move at 6:26 this morning and are convinced this means it is viable. It does move, but Big Bear had a tremor about 3 hours ago and this might coincide with the movement or it could have moved d/t some other reason.

From Earthquake track:

about 3 hours ago 2.2 magnitude, 4 km depth
Big Bear City, California, United States

From FB (video at site):

Friends of Big Bear Valley and Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam
29 mins ·
We zoomed in on Shadow's head just now in order to get a better look at the blood over his eye. We know it's worrying you! It appears that his eye is just fine. The blood could be from an event happening while he was hunting (it may not even be his blood...could be from his prey animal), or it could be from Shadow poking himself in the face with one of his sticks, or it could be a wound from defending the nesting territory from the intruder eagle (see yesterday's posts if you missed that). We can't know for sure. Either way, it appears that his eye is not injured.

:1val: Jackie flew from the nest at 1:06 and did not return till 2:28. This is the longest that Jackie or Shadow were away from the eggs by far. A raven was seen before she left and ravens were heard nearby after she left, yet none of them went for the eggs. The cam op only panned the area once during this time and not an eagle or raven was seen from that view. Jackie is incubating as I leave.

:1val: If you have time to view BB, start at 4:56 when Jackie is standing on the nest looking outward, She starts alerting. (She left the eggs at 4:54 to stand and look out like this.) You get the feel there is an intruder somewhere that she is looking for, then possibly Shadow does a fly-around the tree twice and lands off cam in the near distance and there are beautiful sounding communicating vocals as I've ever heard from any eagles between them if indeed it is Shadow ... no way of knowing, but I don't think an intruder would respond to her vocals in this manner. Eventually you can hear someone land on a branch out of view and Jackie took off at some point, I no longer remember the sequence. But while she was gone during this period you can hear them vocalizing in the near distance and at some point you can see an eagle flying. She comes and goes and there are more vocals, so I do think something is disrupting them this evening.

thanks for the report SWINWK. This nest has certainly seen tough times.

:flirty: Jackie is home asleep with her head tucked over the bowl. There is a video of a raven on the branches around the nest while Jackie was off today, but I don't know the timestamp on that. It never went for the eggs.

As far as I can gather from chat this morning the 4th egg at Sauces remains intact. I do not follow this nest, but am aware of the loss of the 3 previous eggs.

:1val: Saw elsewhere that Sauces laid egg #3 yesterday, but that may have been a typo on their part. This is egg #4 and possibly egg #5. I found this from a mod here from yesterday after the egg was laid:

CamOp MIBDave Mod • a day ago
She laid eggs on 2/21, 2/29, and 3/4, and now today. There was probably one we didn't see between 2/21 and 2/29 so this is probably egg #5.

:1val: Gigi, I don't know if you are aware the 3/4 egg also broke at some point prior to the 5th one laid. So she is only incubating this 5th egg that is still intact at this point, although we have a way to go as I thought I read that one of her eggs didn't break until day 5. Don't even know if the egg breaking on the 5th day was from this season or another.

I did not know that, SWINWK. I will update the calendar. Hope #5 makes it.

Sad! I sure hope the biologists figure out what has happened at this nest. :tissue: Eagle calendar updated

:15heartbeat: Gigi, I happened to read the following the other day and went in to get it for you. This is Dr. Sharpe's responses to a couple questions asked of him about the Sauces nest during his most recent Q&A session and may answer some of ours. They refer to the female here as A48 who is also known as Audacity. The male is Jak. The 1st one is why there were probably 5 eggs (the one was never seen and possibly explains the long gap in her egg laying) and the 2nd is a possible reason why they are breaking, but not known. When on chat here, if you see Institute for Wildlife Studies Mod, that is always Dr. Sharpe.

A-48 laid egg#1 on 2/21 and egg#2 on 2/29, 8 days apart, which is unusual.
Could it be that she laid another egg in an unknown location around 2/24-2/25?

Institute for Wildlife Studies Mod
Yes, she could just be dropping them from her nighttime perch and not in the nest.
Our captive eagles just dropped the eggs from wherever they were perched.

Over your years working here have you seen anything like A48s egg situation before?

Institute for Wildlife Studies Mod
No, she definitely has issues, but what they are we will never know. They are probably
physical and not related to contaminants

Sauces video from FB showing 4th egg collapsing or whatever happened to it. I am heartbroken about this nest.
