Condor Update- 4/1/2021 @ 1030am

Hi Viewers- As most of you have observed, Condor #943 has half of a can lodged on his lower beak. We first noticed it yesterday via the cam and we aren't sure when exactly the can became lodged, but we suspect within the last few days. The cam was able to give us a very close look this morning and we can see that it is half of a can and that it looks to be very well lodged on the lower beak.

Our current plans are to attempt to recapture #943 ASAP to remove it and hope their is no serious beak damage. It doesn't appear to be at this stage, but we won't know until the can is removed. Trapping any wild condor is no easy feat, so please keep up the great observations while we try to help #943. We will keep you updated.

Nesting update- Redwood Queen and Phoenix are cruising right along and we hope to see the egg hatch in late April. The 7 other nests in central California are also doing well.

Quick note- The cams have been experiencing signal loss, we are working with Explore to trouble shoot the issues.
Thank you for your patience!

:15heartbeat: More screen captures from today:

SC by Betsy of #943 today.

Close up by Annabella.

Clear view of can by Annabella.

At the watering hole by Cali Condor.

Viewers continue to say he can drink, wonder how much he can get down.

From earlier this morning by Joe Burnett as posted by Cali Condor:

Update from Joe Burnett on condor #943

Yes, we spotted the issue earlier today. We are working with Pinnacles to come up with a plan to recapture this bird. Unfortunately, the Big Sur pen is not functional so we need to rely heavily on the Pinnacles and San Simeon pens. We do have some other potential capture options for Big Sur but they would be very difficult.
Unfortunately, this is the first time we observed this. About 15 years ago, Condor 251 had an intact beer can get lodged on his lower mandible, very similar to 943. Fortunately, the can fell off after he was captured in our Big Sur pen. He suffered no serious injuries and was re-released right away.
I can’t say for sure, but it does appear to be a crushed can. Thank you again for the watchful eye, very much appreciated.
Keep you posted. Let’s hope 943 does ok.
Trash and trash entanglements are a real menace for wildlife across the planet, so sad to see them suffer.
Best, Joe

:15heartbeat: They are confirming #943 is drinking water. More from VWS mod:

Ventana Wildlife Soc Mod • 2 hours ago
We just never know what we will see next. Very unfortunate to see condor 943, or any wildlife for that matter, suffer due to a trash entanglement.

We are currently looking for a window to catch 943, but he needs to be isolated from the others. Amazingly, he is still very alert and has been drinking water all morning. Condors can sustain much longer without food than water, so were relieved he can hydrate. We suspect he will likely flush when we approach with the capture net, so we just need to exercise serious patience and not waste any trapping opportunities over the next couple days.

We were watching 943 interact with other young birds earlier in the hopes they would pull the can off while they were playing. One can only hope! I can tell you from past experiences that we will eventually catch him, so hang in there everyone.

A quick trash note- Approx. 5 years ago, the condor flock located a dead sea lion on the coast. Our excitement quickly turned to worry after we realized the sea lion died from entanglement in a fishing net. We were concerned the condors might also get entangled while feeding on the sea lion carcass and potentially suffer the same outcome. The beach was inaccessible to us, but fortunately the condors avoided the netting before the carcass washed away. However, it was easy to see how one fishing net could potentially kill so many animals. The nylon fishing net will persist on in the environment for years to come, unless we remove it.

What can we do to help? Please pick up trash, whether it be in your own neighborhood or your favorite beach or natural space. It's really a win-win for all.

:15heartbeat: Redwood Queen remained on egg duty today and did take at least 1 quick break. Below is a video by Cali Condor of #943 with close ups. Some areas of the video are crisper than others. Some of the other condors appear curious of the can on his beak and he is hypervigilant and reactive if they come closer than he wants right now. I sure hope he can drink water ...

:eggthumb: Redwood Queen and Phoenix did a nest exchange late this morning. This afternoon Phoenix took an almost 40 minute break, but returned for nest duty and was there as night fell. There were not any condor visits to the Big Sur Sanctuary today, even though food was still available. You have to wonder if the condors are aware of a human presence ... maybe with the effort of a rescue for #943. There were not any updates posted on the status of that situation today. Following is the nest exchange late morning showing Redwood Queen about to exit as Phoenix is about to enter the nest cavity by Cali Condor:

:7val: Redwood Queen is back on duty. She came in just before noon. The condors returned to the Big Sur Sanctuary today. Condor #943, who still has the half can on his lower beak, visited the sanctuary. He was at the watering hole again and is still unable to eat. There were no updates posted on his status. And who of all condors checked #943 out today ... it was none other than Puff Daddy #219, who years ago had a can lodged on his beak! Screen capture below of Puff Daddy checking out #943 by Betsy:

:15heartbeat:

And here is Puff Daddy's bio with his wonderful photos at the bottom. He is one of my favorite condors and is a bachelor. He is actually who I had hoped would pair with Redwood Queen, but it was not to be. Please take time to read his bio as it explains how he got his name and also tells how Puff Daddy was able to rescue himself when a can was stuck on his beak. Puff Daddy is "one sharp condor"!!

:15heartbeat: Big Sur cams still not working. From VWS post below, I can tell you as of this morning, condor #943 had not been caught. Their response to someone who mentioned how challenging it must be to catch a wild bird out in the open ...

Ventana Wildlife Soc Mod 3 hours ago
Yes, it is, and I wish I had some news to share. All I can say now is that the crew is working on trying to capture 943. I saw them leave this morning with equipment and optimism. They are ready not only at Big Sur, but also at Pinnacles National Park and San Simeon, where the trapping facilities are operational. If 943 heads over to one of those two places, we have a good shot. But, we're also working on options for capture in Big Sur. As for the camera(s), I don't really have anything on that either - seems to be a power issue that I don't think we can blame on lack of sun. I hope the crew will soon be able to share an update and we can get back to watching the nest and hopefully 943 relieved of his burden.

:eggthumb: The Big Sur cams came back up early this afternoon and Redwood Queen was in the nest. She did take a 20 minute break at one point. Phoenix was seen at the sanctuary late this afternoon. She remained on duty as night fell. No word on condor #943.

From VWS on Phoenix when the biologists found him alive in his natal nest after the fire that swept through there in 2008:

From Ventana Wildlife Society FB
https://www.facebook.com/Ve...
Wednesday, April 7, 2021 @ 6:46 pm

"While we patiently watch Redwood Queen and Phoenix incubate their egg on the Big Sur Nest cam this spring, we wanted to take a moment to look back at the story of #477 and how he came to be known as the chick who rose from the ashes.
In 2008 the baby condor who would later be named “Phoenix”, was found alive inside the cavity of a burnt-out redwood tree having just scarcely survived the massive Basin Complex Fire. Watch as VWS and FWS biologists, who were flown in by helicopter and dropped off in the Ventana Wilderness in 2008, hike to search for signs of life in Phoenix's backcountry nest.
“Finding Phoenix alive after such a devastating burn was truly a miracle, however, locating his nest tree and climbing that massive redwood took all the adrenaline I could muster, it was the toughest and scariest climb of my life!” says Condor Recovery Program Manager Joe Burnett of his experience scaling the fire damaged redwood tree.

I've added a photo for a little levity, by Tim Huntington titled "Synchronized one legged wing stretches this morning from condors 825 and 700." It was taken at Pinnacles National Park on Tuesday April 6, 2021.

:15heartbeat: We have an update on condor #943 from VWS Mod:

Ventana Wildlife Soc Mod • 5 minutes ago
Condor Update 4/12/2021 @ 6 pm
Hi Viewers-

As most of you heard, Condor 943 was observed with a can lodged on his lower beak on 3/31/2021. We first noticed it on the cam and we suspect it became lodged on his beak a few days before we first observed the issue. The cam was able to give us a very close look at his beak on 4/3/2021, just before 943 left the Big Sur area. We were able to confirm that 943 was able to drink but was unable to eat. Condors need their powerful beaks to tear chunks of meat off the carcass and 943's beak has been rendered useless with the can preventing him closing his beak, very unfortunate situation for sure.

We have been in trap mode since we first observed the issue but had no luck in Big Sur. Since the fire, we have been without our release pen and our best means to recapture birds. The rebuild is ongoing but we are still months away from having our pen back in place. After leaving Big Sur on 4/4/2021, 943 was signaled a couple days later near Pinnacles on 4/6/2021.
Exciting development....Pinnacles biologists reported today that they spotted 943 for the first time (since he left BS on 4/3/2021), very close to their release pen. Their release pen can also trap condors, so hopefully 943 enters the trap today or tomorrow. The Pinnacles crew reported that 943 appeared alert and he was able to move around quite well, definitely good news considering his predicament. Keep checking back, we will give you another update once we have him trapped.

Nesting update- Redwood Queen and Phoenix are cruising right along and we are hoping for their egg to hatch on or about April 24th (we estimate the egg was laid on 2/26). Stay tuned to the nest cam and try to spot the pip site around that time. The 7 other nests in central California are also doing well and we expect to have more eggs hatching over the next couple weeks.

New photo of condor #943.
