:girlcrazy: Saw something small and white in front of her chest and scrolled down to see if I could get a bigger image and realized I did not have the whole screen up as there is what looks like an egg that the top has been chiseled out and placed back on at the bottom of the screen that I did not have in view. Unsure how long it has been there. She's repositioned slightly and I don't see the white piece in front of her chest any longer. And I am going to bed as I have obviously been up too long.

:1val: Gigi, I noticed you posted this in "Breaking News' and it was added to the calendar. Used to it wasn't considered a hatch till it had completely cleared the shell. Saw this with someone else previously on "Breaking News", also. So is it now acceptable to post hatches before completely hatched as long as they have started the process?

I can kinda answer that. I usually wait to post a hatch until they are almost free from both halves of the shell. if somebody posts that a shell is out in front, that usually means that the chick is free and clear and the other half of the shell is still under mom (or dad).

Since we usually don't update the calendar until late in the day or evening, we've had time to confirm the hatch. If it was a mistake, the "poster" usually comes back and posts an oops...and if we already have it on the calendar, we take it off. (we've had several of those.)

If you see a hatch in progress..and its really far along with only a few "steps" to go, then you can post a hatch. If ya see just a wing or toe sticking out and nothing else...that's not a hatch quite yet. More than likely if ya see the large portion of the shell away from the chick or parent, chances are very good its gonna complete!!

RE: Peteresburg and the 3rd hatch. gigi said it was half way out, so I added it to the calendar. If we discover that it didn't complete, then it will be removed. Trying to keep track of 250-260 pefa nests is daunting...and that doesn't even include the eagle nests... :girlcrazy:

A little history: Some eagle cam watchers are a stickler for the chick being free and clear of both halves of the shell before they call a hatch.

Thanks, sky! I did not know that. Actually, I think I read from someone posting on BCAW years ago that the chick had to be cleared from the shell before it can be considered a hatch and thought that was the policy for this forum. Of course over the years, I have read the same on various chats and took that was the accepted norm for all birds. Chat reading for me is heavily eagle related. I waited many hours, even overnight once this season till an eagle chick sitting on the half shell had cleared it before reporting. So, thanks!!

:loveheart2: I think we have had a hatch here this evening before midnight CDST. I am seeing half an eggshell now near her body. A few minutes ago, (I'm watching TV too.) it had been up against the front ledge and I was trying to decide if the shell that you can see in gigi's pic above that is up against the side wall located at the top of the screen and no longer there, if she had moved that piece up against the ledge. But the half shell I am seeing near her body looks fresh and larger than what had been in gigi's pic. So unless I see something further, maybe gigi will be able to tell in the morning. Oops! And while I was typing this and continuing to watch TV, this new shell is gone. She must have eaten it! Hahaha!! I need to pay attention and quit watching TV ...
