Very good observations Carly!

Does make me wonder too as Alcoa are supposedly only acting with the advice from the Victorian Peregrine Project & they do still mention that connection on that latest update on the website. However, one of their scientists did mention over a year ago that he was having new boxes built & installed around their property - just hope this isn't his personal remedy (but what the heck is the divider all about :? ?) - but someone, somewhere thinks it was a "good" idea - oh brother! - we can only wait & see now if S&H think it was "good" too

I'm confused. The cam link that I have shows the old nestbox on the water tower. I suspect that they haven't installed a cam on this box yet. I guess they won't until they confirm that S&H are going to use it!

I've been staring at the picture of the new box, and I agree with Carly's concerns. We will just have to watch for one season (provided S&H approve of the box and use it) and see how the chicks do. I also wonder if there really are two compartments or if there is just a panel attached to the face of the box and still leaving one large compartment behind it . . . ? Not sure.

I sure hope that is just a panel it really doesn't make sense to
have it blocked like that inless its for parents to hide from kids or a
time out room

too funnee KF :thumbup

yes that is a good observation too SusanE - perhaps that front panel is casting a shadow which appears as a wall behind it - well we won't know any more until we get a live cam on it ... so I spose it just left to checking each day now ...

Not sure, but I'm thinking that vertical piece might be a support for the box. Since its no longer on something stable like a watertower, they might have decided it needed a little extra support. Sure hope the falcons decide to use it!

Well I don't know what to think of the new box and location. It is a disappointment to me. I cannot imagine that they would build a box with two sections to it, even boy scouts know how to build nestboxes, so I'm hoping that it is just an illusion. I wish that they could have a nice place to explore as they did before. But looking at the shadow of the box, and if the box is the square at the top of the shadow, looks like there might be something below like a platform and of course there would be the top of the box and the cam to jump to. Heck, I'm not sure that's even the shadow of the nestbox. I hope they start the cam rolling soon, we might even be able to see them in the trees. That would be interesting.

Well if Sheila and Havoc choose to nest here, I will be watching of course.

Well I flipped the picture and blew it up and then lightened it and
that shadow in the box and the way the stone is built up (looks to me) to be a wall

Well I hope it's not, (but it sure looks like it) as they would have absolutely not enough room for the parent and all the chicks, I mean there could be up to 5 or 6 falcons trying to fit in there. That would be a disaster.

I suppose that it could be a HUGE box, with nothing to measure it's size to, hard to tell, but still can't imagine the purpose of two sections. It makes no sense.

Yep that's a wall - weird as! Sorry but I will be VERY surprised if S&H choose this exposed, odd box but hey, I'll be glad to be proved wrong

Checked the cam again, no change.

But I was just wondering about when the picture was taken. Is it winter there now? Everything sure looks nice and green.

Yes it's deep Winter here right now ljames & Alcoa is about as close as you can get on mainland Australia to Antarctica too but our vegetation ALWAYS looks like that - it doesn't lose it's leaves or brown off as it doesn't actually get so cold as to snow here I guess - even up on our very few highest mountains where it does get some snow in Winter - there are gum trees that grow there called, funnily enough, Snow Gums & they don't even lose their leaves either - now that's TOUGH!

Wow, thanks Pru, I had no idea. In the winter here, all the trees are bare, well not the evergreens.

Hi PattiO :neth :hithere:

I guess they won't start the cam until they see some positive action around the nest box so we won't be able to watch much until that day does or does not arrive
