In honor of Mom, a memorial service was held near the Rachel Carson Building in Harrisburg at 1:00 P.M. on October 2, 2010.

Following are posts from those who couldn't attend the service in person, but did observe it online. Following those posts, please add new posts from your online or in-person observances.

Great pictures this morning Reenie- Thank you.

You all should be gathering now, as we all are, in the memory of Mom.

:spring1:

Thank you Beth

Dear Mom of Harrisburg,

You don’t know me but I first met you back in the early spring of 2008. You were pretty busy at that time with youngsters running all over your ledge, so I don’t blame you for not remembering me. I didn’t realize at that time all the work you had put into those kids to get them to that point, but I would learn those things from you in the coming years.

I would learn all the sounds you made and what they meant, and I would learn that sometimes you meant business . . . and sometimes you were expressing your love . . . either for your children or your mate whom we call Lil Dad. I would learn to tell the difference among all those sounds, and I knew that I never wanted to be on the business side of your comments and that I always wanted to be there to hear and see your loving side toward your family.

You were frustrated sometimes with Lil Dad when he wanted to sit on your eggs at the wrong time, but thankfully you were always watching him to make sure he didn’t mess things up. You had some challenging kids, too, didn’t you? But you were always patient and knew just the right times to be tender and the right times to be tough. I’m sorry that this last year you had so much sorrow with your Blue Boy. You always had a tender spot for any of your kids who needed special attention, and I admire you for knowing exactly how to handle it.

The other day when I heard that you were missing from your home ledge, I tried so hard to pretend there was something in my eye, but then there was no pretending that could cover up the flow of tears. There came a hand on my shoulder asking what’s wrong, and when I said, Mom of Harrisburg is gone, he knew. He knew the importance of that because he had also listened to you from afar just as I had listened to you up close. Just as together we had listened to your children screaming and the trains screaming through your town and how we had walked together through the streets below your home ledge only a few weeks ago.

You are actually sort of famous but I know that wouldn’t matter to you; only your family mattered to you and nothing could get in the way of you protecting them, and I admire you for that, too.

I really don’t know where you are now and maybe I don’t want to know, but a few things I wish you could know about me: You inspired me to learn; you inspired me to reach out; you inspired me to participate in safeguarding other juveniles of your species; and you have inspired me to educate others to do the same.

Dear Mom, you are truly one of a kind and there will never be another like you, so wherever you are my hope is that you will come to know that what you have done for me and so many others will set you on a flight of joy and freedom far beyond that which any of us can imagine. I am reluctant to set you free, but I must.
Please take my love with you.

SusanE

Susan,

I had a lot of ragged edges in my feelings about Mom and her absence from the ledge. Your tribute smoothed the roughness away.

Thank you so much.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. It is so hard letting Mom go.

Edit: I should add, thanks to Cricket for encouraging all of us to do this.

:cloudnine: So true, Beth.

Mick, I love that you posted a burning candle for Mom right at the beginning of the Memorial.

I'm so looking forward to reading the report on the gathering today. I really wish I could be there with you all right now. It would help to be with people who understand how we all feel. I didn't expect to feel so down today, but I do. We MUST let go and gain peace. We must assume that Mom is gone, proof or not, and feel peace with it so she can be free to fly. Know that I am sending a huge group hug to you all :girlluv: :cryinggirl:

I'm guessing the Memorial is about over and read that the group in Harrisburg
was going afterward for a toast to Mom. I'd like to join in.

Here's to Mom:
