Those videos are really fun to watch. Thanks, Ferenz, for those links. The mother has a really dark "helmut."

Susan, after I read your comment, I remembered that I had read something about that when reading an article on the different sub-species. Here's what I found,

Falco peregrinus macropus, described by Swainson in 1837 is the Australian Peregrine Falcon. It is found in Australia in all regions except the southwest. It is non-migratory. It is similar to brookei in appearance, but is slightly smaller and the ear region is entirely black. The feet are proportionally large.

In the images of Havoc, Emily and Frederick, the head is all black as well... (I hadn't noticed this until I read the article.)

Thanks for that info, Mick. I think Froona may have written something about Australian falcons, too. I should go back and check that out.

Back on deck today after time away but straight into the cameras to see how we’re going up top. Our little two-day old “Solo” appears to be putting on weight but still has problems holding the head up; that will come with more time. This afternoon we watched as Swift fed Solo while Solo was rolled over face up (unless this is a very early sign of dominance during feeding time!!). Alarming for a few moments but the chick made good attempts to roll back and took food normally during the feeding anyway. Swift returned after discarding the carcass and took charge again so the chick is back upright and settled.

The first time I ever saw a feeding of a chick lying flat on its back was this past season in Columbus. It is so funny to watch, and as expected that little one finally gained enough strength to sit up during feedings later on. Thanks for that update and pic, Mick.

Day 6 for Solo
Posted on 11-10-2010
Our little buddy is growing up well and is eating like a buzzard.
We observed (and video’d) a good long feeding session this morning where Swift
received food on the ledge from Beau and then picked at it to feed herself
and Solo.
Once finished Solo almost rolled over with the extra weight but is content and
sleeping. Video to come later today.

A late breakfast
Posted on 12-10-2010
It seems breakfast is running late this morning, with Swift maintaining her vigil but
calling for breakfast, so far without luck. Little Solo is growing fast now and demand
for food is growing at the same speed on Day 7.
Image

Swift and Solo eagerly await breakfast

Latest Update from Alcoa

Tuesday October 12, 2010

Ava and Havoc continue to spend their time around the coal bunker. Havoc announces very loudly when he is returning to the ledge – he must be proud of his catch of the day!
