:15heartbeat: Day 38 began at 5:21 pm this evening for Jackie and Shadow's 2nd egg of their 2nd clutch at Big Bear. Have not seen a pip nor heard any chirps when I have been able to check today. Site is not reporting any changes.

:15heartbeat: Snowing at Big Bear, but only 1 inch expected today. No pip seen per views of the egg nor chirps heard so far this morning. No Mod reports yet.

:15heartbeat: Day 40 for the last egg began early this evening for the Big Bear nest. No pip seen nor chirps heard when I checked that view of the egg when they were off of it for nest exchanges today. Mods are not reporting any. Excerpt of nest update from Sandy at FOBBV sent in the very early am hours today:

"They are still incubating the remaining egg. It does not appear to have a pip yet. This egg hatching is still within the window of possibility--Big Bear is one of the highest elevation nests on the continent, so the local climate tends to slow incubation by a few days. At the same time, it does seem delayed and we cannot guarantee when or if it will hatch. It is up to the chick in the egg and mother nature."

As night falls on the nest, Jackie has alerted four times at an unwanted large bird flying/gliding in the distance.

:15heartbeat: Site is preparing Big Bear viewers for possibility of no hatches this season. Update from site today:

3/24/21 Update: We are sad to report, after egg 1 began to hatch, it appears that sometime during the day on 3/19 the eaglet passed away. The remaining egg is now 40 days old and will be 41 later this evening. Though we are still in the window of possibility for hatching, with each passing day it is less likely. We will continue to observe, but sadly we believe by Friday that window will close. We do not and cannot know why any of this happens. It is nature, operating in its own way, without explanation.

I thought this was coming. Sad news indeed.

:15heartbeat: Jackie just raised up off her egg to change position and no pip seen nor chirps heard. Mods have not seen nor heard anything today with the egg. This evening changed over to day 42 for the remaining egg of her 2nd clutch.

:girlsad3: Just saw the 6:28 nest exchange that Shadow did not want to happen, but Jackie has taken over and is on egg duty. I am just heartbroken for them and their chicks that may have been here this season. It is even harder with all the hope and anticipation of not only chicks with the 1st clutch, but that of a 2nd clutch. The egg reached 42 days earlier this evening and it is Friday, the day the site felt if the egg had not hatched by, it will not. Yet, their hard work and dedication continues with this last egg ... :15heartbeat:

So sweet. I sure wish they had an eaglet to care for. :15heartbeat:

:15heartbeat: Jackie and Shadow continue their incubation of the remaining egg. The mod gave a little nest history. This nest was started by Lucky and Ricky in the fall of 2012 when their previous nest in a nearby snag collapsed.

:15heartbeat: Jackie and Shadow continue to incubate the egg. He did bring her a fish at 11:06. The egg appeared to be left alone for a short period today, but one of them could have been just off the cam view.

:15heartbeat: Jackie and Shadow continue to incubate. Shadow actually stayed all night on them last night for the 1st time and met ... is it Fiona they call their flying squirrel here? Anywho, he does a mean wing slap too!

:eggthumb: While they continue to incubate, the site is reporting Jackie is spending less time as last night for the 2nd night in a roll, it was Shadow spending the night on the eggs. And yes, he encountered Fiona once again during his nightshift.

:eggthumb: Jak and Audacity of Sauces certainly have problems with their eggs hatching, but look what a mighty fine job they do when they get a hatch!! SC by Jo Jo T. :

:1val: Shadow continues to take the nightshift and really he is doing the dayshift. Jackie is on the nest for only minutes at a time really. He just did a wing slap a few minutes ago at Fiona I assume, even though I didn't see her.

:15heartbeat: Not sure what is going on at Big Bear, but no incubation since 7:59 and prior they had been coming and going with alerts as if an intruder in the area. You can hear a rustling noise at 7:59. Have not seen any one since 8:14.

Edit to add: Noticed Fiona on the nest at 10:30 something even stopping to eat. Was off and on the nest for a few minutes and stopped to smell the egg at 10:44, but did not do anything to it. For several days the mods have talked about the egg having a hole in it. Can see it from time to time, but so far it remains a small one.

:15heartbeat: It seems Jackie and Shadow have finally stopped any effective attempts at incubation.

:1val: Fiona is currently on the nest eating. Shadow did come in last night to incubate, but so far he has not shown up tonight. No "effective attempt" at incubation today.

:15heartbeat: In case we ever need this, from Janntonne Mod:

"Remember that project I've been working on for quite awhile now? I think it's done...at least through 2020. It's basically for Wray's legacy, but it covers all of the West End eagles as well as the Two Harbors eagles, since Cholyn is Wray's biological daughter, as well as a few others.

Note: For those that don't know, Wray is the original female** on the West End nest and considered by those who knew her the "Queen of Catalina", along with Shenandoah and her hacktower-mate, Dianna. Wray & Shenandoah established the nest in 1991. Dianna joined them in 1992. Superman replaced Shenandoah in 2006. Dianna disappeared in 2008.
**There is evidence that the nest was used as far back as 1929, but there aren't any statistics about the eagles from that time....that I know of anyways. The nest went dormant due to DDT and was re-established in 1991 by Wray & Shenandoah."

"from 1991 Wray's Family and Legacy thru 2020"
