There has been concern about Mom Decorah's right eye. From RRP FB page:
"Thanks to our camera operators' diligent work and John's high-powered cameras, we got some excellent photos of Mom's right eye today! We forwarded them to Dr. Laura, who said:

"I think that what we are seeing is a scar on the cornea; the cornea becomes opaque instead of clear when it's been damaged. It does appear slightly raised, which is a bit unusual, so she could also have a foreign object (a small piece of bark, a stick, a grass seed, or some other object) in her eye. She may also have a granuloma on her cornea (a thick whitish tissue that is a bird's response to infection). If it is a scar without a continued underlying foreign body or infection, it will gradually subside...but don't expect that to happen quickly. I also think her eye looks more comfortable than when we first saw the injury last week."

We truly appreciate Dr. Laura taking time out of her busy schedule to look at Mom's eye and it is beyond wonderful to hear that she believes it is looking a little better...but please note that this is an educated observation under limited circumstances and not an official diagnosis. We have our talons crossed for Mom's recovery. Go, Mom!

Sherri, Tulsa, and Camop Coqui sent us before and after images and videos of Mom's eye. We've shared them below so that everyone can compare them. You should also check out Tulsa's video, which shows Mom's eye today: https://youtu.be/OT8CikpfTMU. Our camera operators and video makers worked very hard to keep us updated with videos and caps!

If you’ve read down this far, we blogged on eagle eyes in 2017. Follow the link to learn more about them! https://www.raptorresource.org/2017/11/19/eagle-eyes/"

Update from Decorah including last year's chicks progress.
"The Decorah Eagles are back!

We hope that your new year is off to a great start.

As you may recall, last year ended quite dramatically at the nest in Decorah. One of the three eggs that were laid was broken and both of the eaglets that successfully hatched (D32 and D33) prematurely fledged, falling from the nest requiring emergency medical care. Both eaglets were transferred to SOAR (Save Our Avian Resources) where they were both admitted to intensive care. It appeared that both were negatively affected by the presence of black flies whose bites let to irritation for the eaglets causing them to become malnourished, weak and anemic. In addition, D32 suffered from a broken bone in his right leg.

We are happy to say that both eaglets showed incredible improvement. D33 was successfully released by SOAR and D32 remains as a patient and is thought to be close to being able to be released.

As for Mom and DM2, they are back at it at the nest. Nestorations have been under way as well as early copulation.

This year has not been without its share of drama however...

The nest was visited by a bald eagle intruder earlier in January. The intruder, thought to be female ate some frozen nestovers until she was chased away by Mom and DM2. While there was some speculation whether or not the intruder was trying to take over from Mom it is believed the she was just looking for a meal, not a takeover.

The weather has been overall mild but not without moments of snow and cold during which time Mom and DM2 have hunkered down in an effort to use as little energy as possible.

Perhaps the biggest concern has been Mom's right eye. It was observed that Mom has been favoring her right eye, keeping it closed more often than usual. A local veterinarian confirmed the fact that the eye appeared irritated and that Mom was reacting the same way that any of us would with an irritated eye by keeping her eyelids shut to protect from the cold, blinking and sometimes rubbing her head on her shoulder. The good news is that so far, the irritation does not seem to be preventing Mom from any of her usual activities as she continues as always to prepare the nest for more offspring.

If Mom and DM2 remain on schedule, eggs could be on the way soon and we look forward to sharing another exciting year with you and keeping you up to date.

We have added amazing video to the site of D33's release from SOAR, the intruder visiting the nest, Mom and DM2 surviving the harsh winter weather and close ups of Mom's right eye. Click below to get all caught up of everything happening at the nest!

The latest from Raptor Resource FB page on Mom's eye:
"We know everyone is worried about Mom's right eye! You'll be glad to know that it looked much better this morning. Last week, Dr. Laura told she thought we were seeing a scar on Mom's cornea, since an eagle's cornea becomes opaque when it's been damaged. She also told us that it Mom's eye would become clearer as her injury healed. I've included a capture that shows us how much Mom's eye has cleared/healed since we posted about it last week.

Thanks for watching, caring, learning, and sharing - and a special thanks to our camera operators and moderators for passing along these captures!"
