Often I see one of the eaglets biting at Mom's feathers while being brooded. Very sweet. :flirty:
Not sure if eaglet is hungry or just taunting Mom!

4 Nov 2020 Owl Attack, Eagles at Dawn and Picture-Book Sunset.

author :Luceforall

DM2 is invisible on his perch (to the left of Mum Decorah, but higher up). What, judging by size and time of day, is probably a Great Horned Owl, attacks him and throws him off his perch. Surely Mum Decorah cannot see what is passing in the darkness, which explains her lack of reaction but, after a while, she vocalises.
Some quiet scenes of Mum Decorah and DM2 in the early morning follow, then DM2 is seen on the skywalk, with a fish. No idea whether he meant it for Mum - she is faintly heard but does not come to the cottonwood tree. After that, we lose sight of the eagles. The camera pans around and, once again, we get to marvel at the depth of their nest. Deciduous trees have already lost their leaves but autumn retains some of its magic. We later follow the various stages of the sunset, until dusk.
I used to paint landscapes in oil, so colour and cloud formations are very attractive to me, as well as trees and water courses.

The video is partially accompanied by soft instrumental music - there were no natural sounds - all I could hear was the whooshing of the recorder and some passing vehicles.

Sad news from Raptor Resource Project and later by exp.org regarding Decorah 2020 hatch, D35. Soar high D35 :sorrow:

RRP:

"We are sorry to announce that RRP Board member Brett Mandernack found eaglet D35 dead on January 29, 2021, along the banks of the Iowa River just south of Iowa City. All of us find it heartbreaking to lose another eagle. It is one thing to know that first-year bald eagles have high mortality rates and another to see it reflected in the lives of eagles we have come to know and love.

A necropsy by Kay Neumann of SOAR found that D35 was killed by acute lead poisoning. To learn more about her diagnosis and what you can do, please follow this link: https://www.raptorresource.org/2021/02/ ... poisoning/

SOAR has printable brochures on their website and the Lead is Poison Coalition has printable brochures on their Facebook page:

exp.org:
"Remembering D35
Today Raptor Resource Project announced that eaglet D35, whose growth we watched on the Decorah Eagle nest, was found dead along the banks of the Iowa River. An investigation revealed that D35 died of lead poisoning. You can read a detailed account of their findings on the Raptor Resource Project blog.

Visit the D35 tribute page to share your camera snapshots, art, and other creative work. The gallery will be open to anyone who wants to exchange memories."

Update from RRP
'As we are very happy for Mom and DM2 that they have found a new nest to raise their young this year, we are all disappointed that we will not be able to witness this couple raise their young as in previous years. THE GOOD NEWS IS... there is a second eagle couple in Decorah ... s you may remember from our last email, Mom and DM2 have built a new nest, N3, and decided to lay their eggs there. Just when we thought there would be nothing to watch this season at DM2, a new couple began exploring the old nest, N2B. Well, it seems that Mom and DM2 have remained very protective over N2B and the new couple is not currently in the picture.
A number of eagles have shown interest in N2B, but Mom and DM2 don't appear ready to allow another pair of eagles at the hatchery. It will be interesting to see how the presence of other eagles influences their nesting decisions next fall, and whether another eagle couple might try to move in once the two are busy with eaglets this spring."
In the meantime, Mom did stop by the old nest for a little fish dinner and we have added video to her meal to the site.
We look forward to keeping you up to date about everything happening in Decorah...
Videos which includes some from Decorah North too)

From Raptor Resource Project:
"Thanks for writing, D27 and D36! D27 has moved back into her favorite wintering spot just south of the hatchery, dashing our hopes for a nest in the Spillville area this year. If you visit the cluster map and drill way, way in, you’ll be able to see just how much time she’s spent in this area in spring, winter, and fall.
D36 has headed a little further south since his last eagle airmail. He’s currently spending time on the Iowa River in the Meskwaki Nation Settlement near Tama, Iowa. I’m sure he has plenty of company since the Nation has preserved a lot of land within their borders and it looks like excellent eagle habitat: plenty of low bottomland and a beautiful high upland with cliffs and steep slopes for thermal soaring and night time sheltering.

When can we expect D27 and D36 to head north, and will D27 head north? Our eagles have typically widened their wanderings in March as the weather warms, ice melts, and migratory adult eagles head north for the breeding season. But last year, D36 and D27 didn’t really head north until July, and neither one stayed north very long. That wasn’t surprising in the case of D27, since older eagles don’t tend to wander as much even when they aren’t nesting. We were a little surprised by one-year-old D36 and are very curious to see what he does this year.

Thanks for phoning home, eagles. Stay safe and don’t forget to write! As always, feel welcome to visit our interactive maps to explore the travels of all the eagles we’ve tracked: https://www.raptorresource.org/learning ... eagle-map/. A thousand thousand thanks to Brett Mandernack and the staff of Eagle Valley for sharing their maps, data, and expertise with us!"

4/25 from Decorah FB page, Sue Bruhling: Eagle calendar updated. :sorrow:
"Have you seen this?? Breaking News! Mom Decorah & DM2's Nest has failed, meaning they are not incubating and you are hearing it from me because if you didn't click on the pictures in Raptor Resource Project's Post and read the Picture Description you don't know!!
Decorah Eagles - April 25, 2022
I'm sorry but for people that Love Mom Decorah and DM2 I am shocked to see this most sad news put out by Raptor Resource with a picture mixed in with their Post. Unless this is a hacked picture and write up RRP is saying that N3 Failed? What?? WoW!!! I am Blown away!! Mom Decorah & DM2 aren't incubating?? I wonder how many of you people didn't go in and go through all the pictures because it was not in the main post at all. If you didn't you missed it just like me!! This is Heartbreaking News for me, For all the people that have been following and Love Mom Decorah, Dad Decorah and DM2 for all these years...
I just can't believe that the Failure of Mom Decorah and DM2's Nest didn't Deserve a separate post from Raptor Resource Project to let everyone know what has happened.... No Negativity allowed on our page. It will be deleted. Thank you"

NEW EAGLES
April 26, 2022 New pair at Decorah.
LisaG over on RRP forum posted a pic - evidently of the NEW pair on page 54
I am still looking for news of WHY - what happened to MOm and Dad Decorah?
Pg 50 beautifiul pics - mid April new pair

Speculation on RRP new eagles could be Mom and Dad's offspring.

Scanned several RRP pages, March 30 Mom last spotted.
NOTHING about why unless we are to assume the RRP pair just left and newbies replaced them.

Cute pics of Mother Goose LOL! :egg11:
