I am so excited. CAd e had not been seen since the day after he was returne dto ledge.

but , when last few days,. cam kept zooming in , on what appeared to be a red tape. Mutton chops sideburns. I hoped. The boots on ground could never see 4 together, but from being boot on th e ground, sometimes you do not.

but today, Jim got positive Id

6/1 5:25 pm: Cade is clearly IDed

6:53 PM (37 minutes ago)

vidoe

Rachel flew off to 201 Mission far corner before this video began to join her brother. They fly off and Val takes their place (2:50). The two are on the nest ledge with prey, and the camera zooms in (4:40). As it goes on, you can clearly see that the male on the right has a numbered band on his right leg and red tape on his left, meaning he's Cade (7:00 and beyond), numbered 77/AN. Even clearer when he moves to the floor (8:54).

A continuation of the last video/first clear reading of Cade's ID in 10 days. He and Rachel are wrestling for the prey. She moves off to the right and the cam zooms in on Cade (2:40). The cam zooms out to show the two of them, then Rachel flies off, very nice flight up to the out of camera antennas above the 201 Mission roof (5:48). Another clear zoom in on Cade (15:24), showing not only his red tape but his newly red nose.

I can't wait to watch it. Cade has had me worried this past week; good to know that he has been positively IDed! :10sum:

Not giving up hope for 2023. Maybe once renovation is completed, the new owners will sponsor a cam.

From what I have read there is a complete retrofit. The proposed design for 77 Beale will have reflective glass covering, no bays and therefore no area for the nest site that would be open to the peregrines.

Volunteers for UC Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group (PBRG) have been on the ground for the past few months tracking Val and Canyon's movements to determine if the pair has remained in the territory, despite losing their longtime nest site at 77 Beale, and if they have chosen a new nest site.

PBRG is excited to announce that our beloved Val and Canyon have indeed located a new nest in the Financial District! Their new home is located at 350 California Street.

To add to the excitement, volunteers have witnessed food deliveries to the nest by an adult. Two days ago, Val and Canyon were spotted hunting in tandem again, spending more time outside of the nest at the same time, and delivering food more frequently to the nest. These events indicate that there are eyasses in the nest that are being fed and that we can expect to see fledglings possibly as soon as May 15.

PBRG wanted to make sure that Val and Canyon had in fact established a new nest before making this announcement, and as all of us have witnessed recently at other nests, things can change so quickly.

Volunteers continue to monitor progress and activity at the nest. We will keep you posted!

Cheers!

Denise Peck,

PBRG Volunteer

Update on Val and Cany's family. This year we have 4 very healthy young, 3 females and 1 male. They were banded by Zeka at just under 4 weeks of age. The boy looks as though he is the youngest, but he survived three older sisters - that is "the little one in the back" got to the front and got his fair share of food:). Day 42 for the girls is on Sunday May 15, so it may be that this year we have a very short fledge window; but of course the girls could just opt to sit around for a few weeks, contemplating.

From all accounts it was a strong flight around the area but she wasn't found until 5pm. The buildings are quite tightly packed and there is not much open sky from the ground, so tracking if difficult. I have posted a picture of the building (8 stories tall) on which she was found. It is hard to describe, but next to this building is an entry for the building next door which is a small courtyard with a peeked glass roof - somewhat like a greenhouse roof and covering a small area of the courtyard. Around 6:30pm she flew to the ledge that surrounds the glass roof, and then onto the glass roof itself. She ended up on the metal frame around one of the window panels. It is obviously not the best place for her, but she should be ok for the night.

yesterday report from BArb
Today it was three fledges in one day!, one on the ground, and one not yet accounted for at 7pm. A very unusual day!

By the time I arrived the other watchers had found 76/AW still on the window glass, and just two on the nest ledge. One had obviously fledged. Then around 10am, a third flew off the nest ledge and just around the corner pillar to the equivalent ledge that fronts on California St. That bird subsequently flew across California St. to the JH Dollar Building roof; spending the day sitting on the corner, taking long walks along the edge of the roof, being fed, and finally sometime after 6pm flying a block and a half down California Street to join the third fledge (either the before 9am fledge or the last fledge of the day which happened at 1:30pm) on the roof of 201 California St. The first bird on 201 California had stayed out of sight for most of the day and was only spotted shortly before he/she was joined by their sibling.

The time frame is a little shaky because while this hide and seek and flying was going on we were dealing with 76/AW whom we left on the glass roof (about 2 stories up) of 365 California St. She did a lot of walking too and because of the covered alley she was able to walk from the glass roof essentially around the corner and come out on Battery St. She flew across the street and spent most of the afternoon on a balcony about 5 stories up, slipped, and ended up one balcony down. Around 6pm she decided to fly but headed toward Market St., ended up against a low, older building; with no wide ledges, she pushed off, did a u-turn and headed back toward California St, hanging a right turn, trying for a window ledge on one building, and ending up on the ground at the Tadich Grill. She was quickly boxed up, and is currently spending the night inside. She will be released in the morning.

When I left a little after 7pm, 76/AW was sleeping safely in a quiet room, the two fledges were atop 201 California St. and the fourth with luck will be found tomorrow.

Barbara

Silver band female was lost a few days ago. She was found about a half mile from nest area. It is believed she collided with a wall , was found deceased on ground.
I forgot to put report here.
Yellow male and other 2 females are doing well thus far. It has been hard for boots on ground to always tell who is who. Will wait for yesterdays report.
