:eggthumb: Right now Mom is crouched on the back wall of the nest looking huge and I assume all 3 of the chicks are in the pile up against the window.

Bummer that you cannot get the cams, SGB. I know of another person that can't either, but she is in Canada. At the moment two chicks are huddled up against the bad window behind the orange post and the third is at the back door of the scrape. I had no storm damage here. Front Street in Harrisburg was closed earlier today due to a HUGE uprooted tree. Had it fallen the other way it would have hit a house.

Thanks Jane...my problem is an old computer that can't handle any HDontap cams, which includes two of my favorites: HBG and Richmond.

So glad you and Catwoman didn't have any damage!!

There's a thunderstorm headed their way. Now that I've watered my flowers!

Today's storm was kind of a bust. About five minutes of rain and a little wind. The Harrisburg chicks are to be banded tomorrow, June 7, around 9:30 our time. More information on how to watch is posted on the DEP web site.

Rather late with banding aren't they? Chicks are 30 and 29 days old! A bit of a risk they're taking I think.

For anyone local reading this, there is to be a story about the Harrisburg falcons on ABC27 tonight some time between 5 and 6:30. Just as several of us were leaving the Education Center this morning, two folks from 27 came in. One had a camera, and was obviously filming Little Dad. We talked to them briefly but our parking time was about to expire and we had to leave. I would guess they talked to DEP afterwards.

Pretty sure that I see 3 in the box. What a relief, I thought they were kinda of big to be getting banded this late. I remember we use to say it was a signal for them to leave the box after banding day.

Yes, I remember this. I had even decided they must not be going to band this season as active and about as they were, then I saw the announcement last night. I think it was here last season that the chicks were already out and about when banded as I felt concern then that they might try to get away and go overboard.

From Falconwire AND FB. 6/7:

Banding info.

Today, in collaboration with the biologists from the PA Game Commission, all three eyasses were successfully banded. Banding provides biologists the ability to identify a specific, individual bird. It also can provide information on where the bird was banded, how old it was at banding, and its sex. Each young falcon was banded, weighed, and given a physical exam. All three had clear eyes and throat indicating they are trichomoniasis free. They also had a full crop, a testimony to how well the adults have been providing prey for the young to feed on.

Specific statistics for each falcon:

Sex: Male, Federal Band #: 12608084, Identifying Band #: Black over Green, 04/BZ, Tape Color: Yellow, Weight: 700 gr.

Sex: Female, Federal Band #: 194747101, Identifying Band #: Black over Green, 23/CA, Tape Color: Blue, Weight: 1 kg.

Sex: Male, Federal Band #: 112608085, Identifying Band #: Black over Green, 05/BZ, Tape Color: Green, Weight: 800 gr.

So, the mix for 2023 is two males and one female. Due to their smaller size, the males will mature faster and will likely be the first to fledge (take their first flight). Fledging is anticipated to begin around June 15. Stay tuned to the PA Falcon Cam!

Thanks for this.
I will really try to get a few photos here every once in awhile. When I put this cam up, I can only have it up. ( used to be able to have it up with my other ones.
Even though we do not have Niecey and little dad here, these are 2 very good adults. They may even turn out to be as good.

If there is anyone local reading this, please consider helping with watch and rescue, which will begin on Thursday, June 15 and continue until June 25. We could REALLY use more help. Yesterday Green Boy was up on the shield at least twice, and one this morning that I saw.

:eggthumb: Green fledged this afternoon and eventually ended up in that space they do from year to year where they need assist to get out of as they can't just flyout. He was assisted out, but don't know where he was placed afterwards. I do see at least 2 over by the column right now.

:5val: Right now, I can see at least one by the column. Yellow fledged this morning and Green is at "Red Creek Wildlife Center". Here are the 3 reports from the "Falcon Wire":

6/16/2023 :: Second fledge!
The yellow-banded male peregrine (04/BZ) fledged from the RCSOB 15th floor ledge at 7:35 AM this morning! After a brief flight, he made a successful landing on the roof of Harrisburg University. Both adults have stopped to check on him and are encouraging him to make a second flight.

The blue-banded female (23/CA) remains on the ledge where she continues to prepare for her own big debut in the sky, most likely still a day or two away.

After fledging to a low perch around 3 PM yesterday, the green-banded male (05/BZ) got boxed in on a small area behind the RCSOB Auditorium last evening. After it was determined he could not get out by himself, Falcon Watch and Rescue safely retrieved him. As a precaution, he was transported to Red Creek Wildlife Center for observation. Check back here for updates!

6/16/23 :: Update on Green
Green has no apparent injuries or illness, just slightly underdeveloped flight muscles. He'll be held at Red Creek Wildlife Center for a few days while the flight muscles continue to develop.

Thank you to everyone at Red Creek Wildlife Center for looking after Green, and to our volunteers for amazing work during Watch and Rescue!

6/16/2023 :: Watch and Rescue Update
After resting on the University roof for most of the day, Yellow successfully returned to the 15th floor nest ledge shortly after 5 PM today.

After making two short flights, he has already absorbed information about how his wings can work with the air, and his flight muscles should rapidly gain strength for more sustained flights.

It is amazing how quickly fledglings begin to look like experienced flyers!
