A cold winter has 14/BR start closer to her average egg dates compared to last year. She laid her 1st egg on 3/11/2021, 2nd 3/13, and 3rd 3/16.

On Friday 3/19/21, we noticed a behavioral change in 14/BR. She was sitting on the porch facing into the box with her eyes closed. She would move her head and acknowledge her mate returning back and forth to the nest with a turn of the head but continued to keep her eyes closed. She was acting uncharacteristically lazy and lethargic. Once the male noticed she was not sitting on the eggs his instincts switched from hunter to nurture and sat on the eggs until the camera went black for the night.

The next morning, leaving his sleeping wife to get breakfast he returned from chasing down a Monk Parakeet. Upon landing on the porch she saw his 3 eggs exposed and in mate lying dead on her belly with her head tucked in the corner. Disturbed and confused he brought his breakfast in to her and when she didn’t take it he carried it to the eggs and as if going over in his mind what he should do next he released his meal and gathered his unborn children under him and kept them warm.

Much later in the day as the day drew to an end and the sun sat low in the sky a shadow was cast across the porch. From the shadow walked in a large female chatter as the male lifted up from his eggs to face her. Then the mystery was revealed. Back on 3/13/21 a third bird was seen in the area, hunting and chasing birds on the MNSA property. We can predict that at some point from that time to 3/19 this bird interacted with the resident couple. It is the female’s job as the largest of the pair to defend the nest from intruders and predators and 14/BR was not going to be delict at her job. Peregrines rely on speed and impact when hunting birds on the wing and use the same methods when defending their territory from other peregrines. May the hit was a bit too hard or collided in the wrong spot, or just caught off guard but from her condition on Friday was my definitely injured and succumb to those injuries after defending her nest box.

The new female BD/54 has since visited the box regularly and received offerings from the male but refuses to sit on the eggs making the males job that much more difficult.

MNSA- such a sad story. Since the new female is not interested in the 3 eggs, will the tiercel give up on them and start a new clutch with the new female? He is standing quietly on the ledge now, almost like he is thinking about it.... :tissue:

Reminds me of Mitchell and Renetta at Cobb Island..she was also injured while battling an intruder while carrying an egg, and later died. :tissue:

Has anyone else noticed the little videos MNSA has posted to the sidebar of the cam page? One very sad video showed the male coming in with prey and finding his mate dead. He reatreats to the lip of the ledge and stares at his mate still holding the prey in his beak....Also another video entitled “the new matriarch” showed the female on all three eggs and then she purposely rolls one of the eggs off to the side and then sits back down on the remaining 2. THEN, then when I go to view a live feed, the new matriarch is sitting on 3 eggs.....So, did the male roll the egg back over with the other 2, or did she lay one of her own eggs and add it to the first 2??

MNSA- Interesting interaction here. The male flew in, and walked up to his former mates body and paused. The new girl barreled in and started a bonding time with the male, which he joined in for a while. But then he edged closer and closer to his eggs, facing the female, but not really bonding. Finally she got the message and left, allowing him to settle on his eggs...

(That was horrible to watch!!) She actually ended up having a prolapsed uterus...and that's what killed her. No matter how hard they tried, they just couldn't get to her in time. (only way to get to Cobb was via boat.)..

Eggs are scattered, only two are visible. I wonder if the female has been busy again....she is standing looking out from the nestbox.

She comes in with food and he leaves.

Takes food to eggs..then pulls one egg toward her...acts like she's feeding it!!! Say what?

She obviously isn't successful feeding an egg and leaves.

My “human” brain is telling me she is trying to prove to the tiercel she would be a good mate/ mother for this nest, but I don’t know if a peregrine would think like that....Another question- as much as these eggs have been rolled around with on and off incubation, are they still viable?
