This morning, may 18th, 7.25 a.m. ARTEMIS, female started for the first flight! Seems she landed safely on the "balcony" surrounding the steeple 10 mtrs below the nestbox. We hope her second flight- the landing! - will end safely on a nearby roof ...

ARTEMIS flew up, thunder!
We haven't had THAT in 20 years!

The first flight of the young falcon always went down, e.g. often on the church roof or on the roofs of the surrounding houses. ARTEMIS has fluttered up onto the railing of the narrow aisle of the chapel, i.e. the tower top on the spire!

So it is now about 5 m higher than the nest box! The inside of the chapel is covered with sheet metal, you cannot go in there as a person. Inside on the sheet is a plucking and crook area for the old falcons, which the young falcons that have flown out quickly discover every year.

The railing, on which ARTEMIS, wet with fluffy crowns on its head, will rest until tomorrow, is a popular meeting place for young and old. In the next few weeks, we Heidelbergers will soon see several falcons standing on this railing.

Thank you, S.F.!

The second young falcon started at 7.44 a.m.
Thanks for the reports!

today only Marsilius (SDR) is still "at home"
Banding is not clear to see, but the only one, that could fit also, is SDP - Artemis (female), and she is/was bigger

Awesome .

Usually, after departure, the young did not come back, if I remember correctly.

Once again one of the young falcons that had flown out has returned to the box.

14:40 I spotted a returnees and after a long search for the ring I could see that Apollo is back. "He fell over a small bird all by himself in the right corner of the nesting box

Now three (!) Young Falcons are back "at home". One on the pole outside, two lying - pretty flat - inside. How nice to see you again!

Hello, the 3rd young falcon has just flown out. It's always nice to see how quickly they grow up. Thank you for your annual work that allows us to keep track of it. Greetings Astrid

Dear falcon fans, today was an exciting day. The parents were there, including several young falcons, but now Marsilius is finally all alone.
Let's be surprised if there is a returnee. I wish everyone a relaxing evening.

I don't know who is too dark to read the numbers,

They are on the threshold and they will go to sleep, I think

Marsilius has just started (08:44) on his first flight.

Waltraud Waltraud from Heidelberg wrote on May 22, 2021 at 9:58 am
Just before 6:00 a.m. this morning, Marsilius was alone in the nest box. Then Apollon came and a little later Palatina, who was only on the departure pole and brought no food either
would have. The two brothers quarreled for a while about a bird's skeleton that was probably still chewing off one or the other piece. Palatina then took off and at 6:40 a.m. Apollon took off. Marsilius kept trying to take off and a couple of times I thought he was going to take it. As I am currently reading, he actually packed it shortly after 8:00 a.m. But I think we will find them in the nest box a few more times.

It is strange to see an empty nest after such a long time of observation.
I wish the young falcons a good start in their new life and hopefully not a crash landing.
Many thanks to Mr. Gäng for the many guestbook and diary entries and his team for this wonderful opportunity to observe.
We will be missing something.

10:28 Zephyr comes and checks the nest box.
Something is still happening!
